seeking a power steering rack

ive heard that theres porsche racks that fit to bedfords is this true? if so i want one as i need power steering & i have a 3.8 v6 so i gather it will work with that. advice needed please.

I tried P76 without luck. I have a CFL truck with a VP V6 and a Transit power rack. It is MAGIC!

Blackbedford did you have to modify the rack to fit the beddy? what model transit was it from?

G'day Chris,  Seriously looking at power steering on Alien8 for next year.  Have been told that "The Beast" has a transit power steering rack on it (1996 I think).  Could you possibly post a couple of pics of the mounting brackets for the transit rack and what model transit rack is it.  Could save a bit of work.

One of the reasons that I bought the CFL truck (and paid so much for it) was that I was so impressed with the installation and how it drives. And yes I will post some pictures and yes I will be making a copy of the mounts as I have already bought another rack off ebay for $90, which I think was a bargain!

I contacted Barney and got these replies:
G'day Chris, the CF pickup I have, has been in the family for many years and is kept as a spare vehicle for use as required. The power steering rack was added when the engine was out for an overhaul, (a gutless 2.3l GM diesel, giving 15mpg, now up to about 30).I am happy with the conversion as the steering feel on highway is better then original, though the turning circle is also slightly reduced, ie bigger diameter, I may sometime remove the rack, disassemble it, and find the stops inside the rack, and remove or machine them down if that is possible, as another1/4" of travel would put the turning circle back to being perfectly acceptable. In daily use though it does'nt make much difference as now that the steering is easy to turn, backing up and having another go at a tight corner is easy and quick, I know because the CF is a tipping truck and loaded with 2tons of sand, before this conversion, turning it round was a real wrist-busting workout.
Another advantage I have noticed is the absence of steering wheel kickback, sometimes encountered when moving over a kurb, must be the oil damping the rack. Also as the transit (ZF) rack is rubber bush mounted and makes the steering vibes, or lack of, much nicer.I would do it, but remove the engine first, in order to get the best possible welds for the required two small plates/brackets to mount the rack, and align the adapted steering coupling. All in all the rack work takes about 2 days to complete, if you have access to a decent welder and a lathe to adapt the coupling. The track rods also need to be cut down and tapped for the CF ends, do this (measure) when there is weight on the vehicle or you will cut 'em the wrong length, as I found out the hard way (the rods are£25 each here).Again the turning circle is really not a problem.

3,1/4 Turns lock to lock, for this installation I would turn power steering pump faster rather than slower, the 1 to 1 drive ratio I have requires fast idle for best power assist. If you locate a rack I would have a go at increasing the travel, if only by a small amount, before installation. A guy called me about 3 months ago and said he was installing a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van rack on his CF campervan, asking for advice,said he would let me know the outcome, but has not come back-bet he gave up, might be worth a look if you have them down under. Transit rack was easy installation though. Good Luck,
