heater core repairs

so today i got out the whopping big new soldering iron i bought from a garage sale and had a go at fixing old heater cores.

i was quite succesful. things to rememebr thou was clean up your working section with a file or even better an angle grinder for which your soldering up other wise solder wont stick, got to get that soldering iron really hot so turn it on leave it for 10 mins come back:)

if the hole is in the centre of the heater core its probably easier to just block off that run rather than try and solder.

 you can even modify a different heater core from another vehicle to go in the beddy so pull a few fins out before you can repair the section or block it off. use the soldering iron to weld it back together to seal. i wonder if you could do brake lines like this? actually that doesnt sound very safe forget i said that:)



just make sure you got a big soldering iron. no little electrical 15w baby will do.

i reco,d using a commodore heater core n soldered it 2 the beddy tanks.
cant leave the heater on or it will cook occupants.
who needs a heater now anyway its 40f ive turned it off till winter.

ive never tried it yet but truth known u could prob use a section from a busted 3 core radiator ie/ ( damaged from fan going through centre) from a smashed vehicle that had a recond radiator fitted prior to a bad front end smash.
that way its a new section, less cleaning. and usually can be picked up next to nothing.

use ur old heater core tankends....

and the best way 2 repair a heater core is acid dip the end tanks and core so their clean as and get the tank ends hot as before soldering.

most people come 2 greif from, dirty parts or not enough heat.
