thats normal they do that, it sounds like uve got a broken or disconnected
wire from the gauge to the fuel gauge sender in the tank.
or the sender its self in the tank might be broken.

p.s. WARNING   dont (DONT)  ever put a  power wire directly to the sender in the tank.
this could and will explode.

Howdy Marty, u know of the best way to replace a fuel sender on a cf? Is there an aftermarket one u can buy?or do u have to salvage one?

I bought an aftermarket one a few years ago but you need there gauge as well  :-\ I think it was a VDO gauge with an adjustable center
ur a bedford owner ....adapt overcome work it out

ive rebuilt old ones robbing parts from a few dead ones, but i couldnt see it being 2 hard to remodel a later model vehicle one and soldering the bedford fitting plate on.
u just gotta find a few and check they work with the beddy gauge, i know a HQ  ute one does so im sure a sedan one would 2.
ive used a HQ  speedo on the standard beddy cable 2 but the screw fitting doesnt match, just taped it on, lol.
everything man can make can be fixed or remodeled to fit somethiing else,the fun is working out how.

 thats why i love my bedfords, i can fix just about anything that can go wrong.

best way to test ur dash gauge it to remove the sender wire from the sender on the tank.
then extend the wire temporally out the side up to the dash, ull need at least a wire about 10ft long.
then get a working HQ  tank gauge.
solder or twist a HQ connection to the end of the 10 ft wire, '
fit it to the HQ guage and earth the side if the HQ sender gauge to any bare metal steel of the beddy dash area even the ignition key works. then move the float, if the dash  gauge is ok it should register and move towards empty n full.
as long as the HQ  sender is in good condition.
ive used this to diagnose gauge problems before so i know from experiance it works.
works on most vehicles 2
this way u eliminate the dash gauge bein the fault.

fuel guages work on resistance, simply roughly measure your tank , take the guage and sender to a place that will calibrate (and repair) if need be, my last one three wks ago cost me $100.00. some work with a high resistance and some low ,(play with a multimeter it will tell you every thing) your HQ's etc will work in reverse to the beddie, I used my GTS dash like this for a few years , it was ok , just as Wombat says: adapt and overcome ;D

Heres a quick fix that worked for me;

 i had same problem with the fuel gauge sitting on full all the time, so i read this page which in turn got my bedford game face happening :-\  & i pulled the whole sender unit from the tank, wired it up outside the tank,  couldnt get it to register on the gauge while shifting the float up and down.  so i took the sender unit into the cheapest looking auto electrician i could find,

turns out i had a build up of x amounts of krap on the main (and only)  terminal at the top and the piece that goes through the base plate making a connection problem from the underside as well from buildup there too.  cost me 10 bucks to get fixed. pulled apart re contacted cleaned and re terminaled  which you could do yo'self if thats the problem, - check that out with a multimeter measuring resistance on both sides of that base plate .... 

hope that helps someone without having to trace those hard to follow sender wires  or pull apart dashes/ buy new gauges. worth a check first i reckon, worked for me!
