Transmission I.D.

Hi
   I have a Bedford Campervan re-powered with a 173 motor and auto trans with F J on the I.D.tag,is that correct for the motor,the van is very thirsty on petrol.

The FJ is printed on the tag, yes? That's ok just describes the casing type. The "A", "B", or "C" is what you need to know. Yours should have a "C" calibration trans.

As to being thirsty there are many things to look at. Engine tune, are the plugs and points ok? Is the dwell and timing right. How tired is the engine? How much weight do you have in the van? What diff ratio?

                  Yes the F J is on the tag,where would i find the C for the callibration.Motor in good nick and tune,standard diff as far as i know.

       The Van weight is 1600 kgs,if the diff is standard,is there a higher ratio one that will
        go straight in? PS, There is an A on the tag.

No other diff will go straight in. But you kiwis are lucky as Cresta diff gears fit. You need to speak to one of the other kiwis.

Cresta bits are like hen's teeth now. I haven't seen one in years either on the road or in the wreckers yard.

I'm in the process of acquiring some lengthened Jag diff axles and if that works out I am hoping to swap my diff over near the end of the year. Once that happens I will have a diff with Cresta diff head up for grabs.

Internal gear sets. The C has a different 1st gear.

I have a brand new Cresta diff head 3.5 made for the auto Cresta car, it Is one that was never used when they put them in the Ambo's, but sorry won't part with it just in case I may need it one day.
