My intention is to use it as an every day driver, so hauling kids, going shopping, the usual sort of thing. I'm no longer a hard driver, so the need of stop on a penny brakes just isn't required any more. There are a few hilsl about in southern Tasmania where I live, but they've been here for quite some time so they're no longer much of a surprise. The only weight it'll be hauling is it's self and 3 people, max.
The manual that's in it is on it's last legs and will be getting changes as is the clutch, so I was thinking of and auto as there are a few that are available to me through mates. If I get an auto with an over drive it would be good, but I think it'll be more than likely a 1:1 straight through final drive.
I intend to keep the 14 inch wheels as they are period, in good condition and I like them, and was thinking of 60 or 70 series rubber probably 225 235 on the rear if I can get them, it would also fill the wheel arch a bit better than the 50 series.
Ideally if I can get it to cruse at 110 @ 2500 to 2800 rpm I would be very happy, so I was thinking of a diff at about 3:1 or as some one mentioned 2-8 :1.
It's single wheels on the back ( and the front as well )
My wife's 1973 Mini runs a 2-9 :1 on 12 inch wheels and that gets along very well she is doing the best part of 700k's a week all year round, with only a bit of regular maintenance.
Jeff.....
