Hi all, what a great group you have here - I love all the photos.
As of late yesterday I am the proud owner of a Bedford.
I have no idea what I have really - its old, white , rusty, creaky, noisy and gorgeous. And I love her already.
I picked her up from the local dump as a wreck basically (and drove her home on borowed trade plates 5kms), and am now trying to wrap my head around what I will need to do to make her as beautiful as some of those shown in the gallery. There are no beds or seating cushions - so I will need some.
Apparently she is a 1974 model, is a diesel (says so on the petrol cap anyway), has a winnebago 4 berth camper on her back. The guy at the dump says she has a diahatsu diesel engine (4cylinders) and so I suspect she will not go very fast. Drove at 50kms on the way home after being tow started - terrified she would stall but behaved beautifully through 6 intersections.
I suspect she will be very slow up hills and will need a new motor so she can stay in traffic.
The grill is very rusted but is sitting in the top bunk. She has original steering wheel so thats one positive. Has a loo and shower fitted (with a cracked skylight and water damage to that end of the cieling)
Drivers side window has come off the mechanism and does not go up or down.
Could someone confirm that she is 1974? Does anyone know anything about this model. I need to look at the compliance plate with those details on it but is covered in grease and grime - a job for the weekend at this stage and for daylight hours (too late when I got home).
Electrics are not working in the camper and battery is now DEAd flat!!!
Were they a popular conversion to a camper? Was it a commercially available option? Any idea of age of camper - same vintage?
Not registered since 1998 (faded sticker) and have no other paper work - other than the rego plate being NSW. Driven to Ceduna SA 1998 by a guy who worked here for a few years and lived in it permanently in a friends yard.
anyway - lots to learn, lots to spend and she can only get better.
Have posted pics in gallery
Cheers
Kerrie
