Title: Leakey fuel tank.. repair or new?
Post by: Brendon on April 05, 2009, 05:53:50 PM
Hi all...

First off... Love this site.. it has got me excited about getting my van on the road again. Here is the first of many questions I would appreciate some help with.

I have a 1977 CFL van in the nearing the end of a restoration...  After attacking it with the pressure washer the other day I noticed it had put several small holes it the bottom of the fuel tank from pin hole size to a bit bigger. The van has been sitting for a long time now and probably has had a bit of water condense in the fuel and rusted out from the inside.

If it worth trying to repair the tank or is it easy to track down a new one? Are there any other sorts of tanks that would fit?

Cheers for any help.

G'day

If you go chasing another tank watchout as there is several different models.
Pollution tanks are different to the earlier ones.
CFS tanks have a different filler pipe.
So finding another tank the same as yours could be an issue.

G'day

When I worked for a hire company in Sydney we were unable to get a replacement tank for a diesel compressor so we had the inside of the tank membrane coated.

Thanks for the welcome guys... Getting some photos up soon.

Russell: Any idea on costs for the Membrane coating and where one would do this?

A friend is coming over this week who will see if he can weld it up but i fear it may be too far gone.

cheers again.

No idea on the cost but it was obviously cheaper than having a replacement custom made, and it was just a basic square tank that would have been cheap to make.

I just searched the net "industrial coatings fuel tank" and found several companies as well as a D.I.Y kit from Permanent Painted Coatings.
