I've been a big fan of bedfords for years.
Now I think I might like to get one.
I hear they are old and getting older though.
Say I have a budget of 10-15000 - can I get an A1 mechanical one?
I'd like to run it on straight gas or at least dual and it would be my daily driver doing between 70 to 140km a day.
I wouldn't want it to break down on the freeway.
If a Bedford Van just isn't for me because of reliability issues are there any modern vans that look as sweet? (or come close to looking as sweet?)
-
;D ;D ;D Hey Man , All you need for all your wants is -------A FORD Powered Beddie!!
That could start a small debate!!! Cheers Brian ::) ::) ::) ::)

Sweet? another Kiwi I presume. Nearly as bad as Brian menioning the F*$% word
Dave
-
Now thats a contradiction in terms FORD and POWER in the same sentence !!!!! ;D ;D. Just remember if you wanna rev you run a CHEV if you wanna be bored you run a ford ......Now thats how you start a shit storm !!!!! ;D :D ;D :o ;D
-
how about have both, as the bedford brakes are a bit weak for a chevy you could use the ford as an anchor ;)
-
Sorry, guess I shoulda said "fully sick" instead of "sweet". But no, not Kiwi. Melbourne boy.
Where is a good place to find a good bedford for sale?
I've tried ebay, trading post, carsguide, discountusedcars, carsales, and carpoint with no luck.
I'm now thinking I'd better start looking at late model mitsibishi delicas.
-
someone may know did that beddie with the 4.4 leyland motor sell sounds about what tiger is after
Don't want to lose a potential beddophile to a delica
-
take a look at star wars van would be a good start for 5 -6 k if you could convince him to sell at that
-
Gday Tiger where are you located? I know of a van that fits your budget.
Craig
-
there's one out my way (launching place) for $9000, but i haven't had a good look yet
Looks really sweet driving by at 40kph.
When my camera turns up i'll stop and have a look
delicas. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
but i have to say "having a beddie" and "not breaking down", hmmmmmmm
there's always something, it's 30 years old and it's english
That price (without the optional haggling) leaves you between one and six grand to troubleshoot.
second hand lpg (if it doesn't have it) fitted for one grand, two grand rebate - sweet

Hi there was a gold coloured LWB Beddie for sale a little while back.
it had been fully decked out in the front with Autometer guages and full apholstry etc
nice custom front end etc but the rear interior was bare
he wanted $13K for it and it had not sold so I guess you would get it for about 9 to 10K
-
me thinks the leyland one is still for sale.
-
might be worth a look.
subs make it no use as a van but could be moved.
some rust comming oyt - gutters, around side door.
but some nice bits too

diff looks to narrow on the bum again ;D
-
short wheel base or long wheel base???? that is the question.......
just got the ok to sell Borrie to buy Rubmans..... (not going to happen) I'd go after that one Tiger she's a beauty..... you might need to find a good (genuine) mechanic and keep the beddie used and serviced , that's all it takes to keep one on the road....treat it like a new BMW......it will love you forever....LOL
-
so you driving it back?
-
alright. changed my mind.
now I'm after a SWB V8 unleaded for around $800-2000
Not too fussy about body but would like it to run without too much hassle.
I'm only going to be using it as a runabout on the farm and future project, but it'd be a pain in the arse if everytime I go to use it it breaks down (like my old toyota tercel 4wd, every time I used it on the farm the drive shaft would fall out!)
Would prefer a van in vic so it's easier to look at, transport etc.

I don't know where you are going to find something like that for that price because if I see it first it will be mine.
Recent sales in my area are:
V8 CFL van in EXTREMELY poor condition sold for $2000. Basicly it was completely stuffed.
Stock CFS van in very poor condition and no side door, but restoreable (with a lot of work) $900.
CFL body shell (no motor etc) $1200.
Best of luck anyway.
-
Thanks for the heads up.
What is a more realistic price for what I'm after?

Found this valuation guide on carbuddy.com.au
Is it a good guide?

to be honest something is only worth what people will pay for it..
its all about supply and demand..
and what a bedford is worth this week may be different to next week. cause it depends who is looking at buying one in that week as to how much it is worth..
so we can give you ideas of how much we would spend on a van in whatever sort of condition but its not really how much its worth as its worth something different to each indervidual..
does this make sense?
to get an idea just follow ebay and trading post on how much people are advertising vans for..
but dont think cause its got a v8 in it its worth a lot more.. anyone can throw a v8 in a beddy.. you dont even need to change the engine mounts!
the engineers is the paper that makes it worth something..
hope this helps a little

Spot on Ben...sorry Sensai ;D
What he said, also remember to factor in if its in another state too.
But I think the best thing to remember is patience.
Good luck with that I dont have any LOL! :D
-
Cheers guys.
Keep me in mind if you see any beddies round the traps for sale (those that you don't want to buy yourself of course!)
Doesn't have to be a V8 just a SWB that runs.
-
patience... yeh good idea.. or you could just buy each one that comes along for the next 6 months and your likely to get a good one. then when you found a good one sell the rest after taking the best bits from all the others hehe
that works for me anyway..

G'day
Following is advice I posted on the old forum back in 2003. The advice is probably still valid.
I have the following advice on ways to find Bedfords:
-Drive a flash one one around. People often comment where they have seen one or know where one is sitting.
-Scan the net, including the Trading Post. Don't procrastinate, because by 7am Thursday morning I have checked all the adds, Australa wide!
-Place wanted adds in local papers and on community notice boards. I was looking for a Kingswood wagon and placed an add on the local free Radio-Tradio. I got over 40 phone calls. And no I haven't bothered putting an add on for Bedfords because I'm pretty sure I know where they all are around here.
-Always be on the lookout. I was visiting a mate in Newcastle and of course, I checked out the local paper. Ha-ha another Bedford was mine!
-Be prepared to make quick decisions. I was in Canberra on a business trip when I spied a cheap V8 Bedford out of rego. I cashed in my airline ticket and got a 4 hour permit to drive it home, which I did with about 2 minutes to spare.
-Be prepared to travel. A mate was travelling through Moree and saw a clean CFS on the side of the road for sale. 8am the next morning I was knocking on the blokes door after tracking him down and travelling on the night bus.
-Don't take no for an answer. I got Norwegian Wood by being persistant and even ignoring threats of divorce.
-If the price is right take a chance and buy sight unseen. I have bought several Bedfords out of Sydney (5 hours drive away) by giving an envelope full of cash to a car carrier and getting him to pay for it at the pickup. If it's not value for money he rings me and I renegotiate the deal on the spot. He charges me $180 to do the deal and deliver it back to my place.
-Be organised. I just bought Commodore 3.3 EFI motor and bits from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and some really good motor bits in Tasmania. By having the right contacts, I am getting it all transported to Dubbo on the cheap.
-Remember that most people don't know what their talking about. I bought a Bedford that they thought was a Ford van.
Other tips:
-The adds don't always accurately describe the van. The last Bedford I bought had lots of extras (eg H'way diff) that the owner didn't even know about.
- Haggle. Just because he wants $2000, doesn't mean you can't talk him down to $1000.
-It's a lot easier to say sorry than please.
-Women are everywhere, Bedfords aren't.
-If your woman starts to give you to too much grief about your Bedford habits, just remind her that her sister/brother/mother/best friend is still better in bed.
-If you have managed to wake up without a knife in your back, get up and have another go.
Cheers

I think it's more a matter of how much your sanity is worth!
I've had mine for 4 years and I've had to systematically replace just about EVERYTHING in it!
Everyday I drive it, I'm always thinking: "What the F%#K is it going to crap out on now?"
I have a permanent tool kit on board with loads of spares for road side emergencies.
You better have a damn good sense of mechanics, electrics and problem solving to do it all yourself or it'll never get out of the garage or shop.
And I bought a shotgun for the day I finally give up on it, and get it cubed.
But slowly I'm winning...

haha so true..
well id say dont buy a beddy if..
1.youve got a problem with pride.. because more than likely you will be stuck on the side of the road trying to figure out why it just died lol and its not soo good for ones ego when next week every second person down town say hey i saw you last week broken down.. hahah.. but its good for a chat thou hehe..
2.you dont want to be forced into learning about mechanics.. and body work.. or spend thousends of dollars on getting a professional to do it..
3.your self concious.. because every second person that sees you driving around will look around and say to themself what the heck is that van?????
4.you dont want to get the beddy bug and become addicted to an english van.. the BEDFORD!!!!!! wahooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! praise ythe god almighty for a wonderful creation!!!!!!!!!

O.K. So its your lucky day.
I have decided to sell my 1977 bedford van that I have had for the last 18 years. It has a chrysler 360 V8 motor (with engineering certificates) and a Torqueflyte 727 auto box with B&M shifter. It has Centerline alloy mags fitted with
295/50/15 BF Goodrich tyres on the rear and 215/60/15 BF Goodrich tyres on the front. It is registered and used ocassionally for camping etc. It also has an annex tent which clips to the side door when camping which I will sell with the van. It has a double bed fitted in the back with storage space underneith and upholstered cushins. The rear doors have been filled in with a fiberglass panel and fitted with a large window.
