Hi Guys,
Been a member for a few years when I found this site but a Bedford owner since 1996 when I bought a 'Factory ' campervan just like in the Brochures. I was looking for a vehicle to tow a Caravan around Australia when I retireI and at the time didn't even consider a 4WD. I reasoned that a Bedford Van was the best choice as I could put a bigger motor in it in the future.
After a lot of looking I found a 1973 English Bedford Dealer converted campervan with a 2.7 Vauxhall motor in pretty sad condition but it was all there. After a lot of work on the motor and a complete rebuild of the interior, my wife and I did quite a few trips in it. Still slow though and not suited for towing so I bit the bullet and pulled it off the road. About 18 months later and with Regency Park approval we were back in business with a Holden 4.2 V8, Trimatic gearbox, Ford 9" diff, Commodore Disk brakes at the front and 12" drums at the back. new radiator, hand beaten engine cover, new upmarket seats and roof console. I also have a new dash from Ben,s fibreglass but still working on that. The van is on LPG and goes well. I have towed a large car trailer from Newcastle to Perth without any problems.
Still haven't towed the caravan though as I bought a 4WD and use that almost exclusively for towing at the moment. I like the 4WD capability and would like to fit that capability to the Bedford in the future. Then I won't need to tow anything.
