Title: 1979 CF Stuck in gear
Post by: Benters on September 26, 2015, 09:54:50 PM
Hello there,

So I snapped up a 1979 CF for 200 bucks on the weekend, which I am stoked about.
Yet there seems to be a slight problem with the gear box.
First drive was fine but when placing it into to reverse to park the gear stick got stuck in reverse gear, and although it feels as if its in neutral (able to wobble around and move into other gears with clutch in) it is still in reverse gear.
The previous owner said you need to wobble the gear stick left to right whilst slowly releasing the clutch, yet this has not worked.

Any tips on getting the old girl into first so I can drive it home and start work on her?
Also, what does this mean for my gear box?
Any other tips on how to begin servicing the engine.
I previously worked on a hiace and now want a bigger resto challenge but have no knowledge whats so ever with bedfords, so anything you can give me would be great!

Cheers,

Tom

Ive had same problems with Aussie 4 speeds over the years.
It has usually been the shift and linkages.
The shift becomes warn and loose,
Thus selecting a gear 1 st or rev, and then the shift slips past the selector and selects another gear.
Tighten up the shift first before pulling out the g/box.

Get underneath and use a big shifter to move the reverse lever into neutral.
Put the shifter on the reverse lever at the bottom of the shift to move it.

It will just keep happening till you reshim the shift,
Or get another shift.

How would I go about reshimming the shift?

Pulling it apart and buying and fitting the shims in between the selectors.
There is usually a lot of wear on the gates that need welding and reforming back.
Might be better to buy a good shift and use the parts to fix yours.
Where in sydney are you?
I might have 1 in my parts shed i could sell.
