Hi Buga's
Happy days it's started, I'm doing the vn v6 conversion.
Few pics building his new home, got this far and pushed it in and cladded around it, put some posts and beams in for an overhaed hoist.
-
The old 173 and three speed coming out, hoist work's well, made the jocky wheel for the gearbox 25years ago for my first van, glad I kept it, bit of a horded haha.
-
I like your style Phill , building a home for your Beddy now that's true love ;)
Cant wait to see more progress .
Cheers Frank
-
Good stuff Plill.
That jocky wheel is the simplest most affective way of doing it ive
Ever seen.
I wouldnt of thought of it.
The hoist is a gem as well.
Now ive got shed envy, :)
Cheers marty
-
I'm glad you pulled it out the proper way and not cut the front out
-
Yes it's true love Frank, don't know why but I've loved these vans for a long time, since I started it's like I've got Beddy brain fever again, Cheers Marty, Busy, yeah hoist up and roll out, how good is shed time haha.
few more pics,vn motor coming out and one of the eastest oil drains I've ever done.
-
Make the most of the easy oil draining, once in the van is/can be awkward if the engine right down.
What I did on mine was put rubber plugs in the suspension beam. If the oil goes in there when you drain it, it takes weeks to come out - a little bit here, little bit there ...
-
nice another V6 conversion :)
I too like your overhead setup, very flexible and handy for a Bedford :)
-
I haven't looked at the sump yet but I went for the high mount, aircon and power steer
Thanks Sammy, what made me think of it was a few years ago I did a Gantry crane ticket and thought how cool would one of these be in the shed the beams were pretty simple to put up with a chainblock and yeah it works well got a lifting point anywhere in that bay
Made a frame to support the gearbox, clamped onto beddy crossmember
-
pics of engine mount template bolted level and parallel with commodore crossmember, I then cut out commodore mounting plates and bolted them back onto template for new engine mounts on beddy crossmember
-
New engine mounts
-
geez your not wasting any time! it looks good so far :) keep the pics coming for sure!
I didn't realise the commodore mounts were different heights on the crossmember!
I am guessing by tomorrow you'll have the motor in and crossmember back under the van! :o
-
I pulled the old motor out six months ago, doing a progress thing with the photos gunna catch up soon
pics of motor on mounts
-
that little cradle you've made sure will make it easy to slide it all in and out!
-
Hey guys, that is weird with the different height mounts. When i did my VP V6 my mounts were the same height, why the difference here, is your motor a VP ?
george
Is there any time frame on when we can access the album on here, or have we lost those photos forever.
-
yeah that Jockey wheel has been pretty handy over the years.
when aligning crossmember to body can move motor forwards/backwards on the trolley/front wheels and take chocks from rear wheels and move front half of van sideways on girder trolley/hoist for final alignment
Hi George motor is vn, I think the difference is because I used the vn mounts, passenger side has air con compressor on it, this is why i made a template of commodore first that was level and parallel with its crossmember and then projected this onto the beddy crossmember, I also offset the motor to the passenger side 60mm

John B & i are trying to encourage Shane to bring back the gallery...he has been working long hours....we may have to make up a petition!
-
Maybe we need to bite the bullet and all put in a few $$ to get Shane some help. I am sure we are all in a car club and we all know how hard it is to get help... any help, be that good, bad or indifferent!
And please... I am not criticising...
And am sorry to hijack this thread....
-
Yes Gents....how can we help to get gallery back?
-
Shane is working on the gallery in his spare time, of which he doesn't have a lot of.
I've tried to offer my help but nothing has come of it.

Why not, I think a lot of people used these Galleries for ideas for their own projects, Shane help is here in what ever form is required just ask mate :)
-
Any news on its progress?
Ive asked a few times.
-
haven't done much on the van for a couple of months cause the shed is freezing of an arvo now that winter has set in but the van isn't going to finish it,s self so iv rugged up a few times and had a bit of a crack.
been playing with the dash using some parts from the vn dash as I'm using the vn wiring loom.
few pics
-
that works out nicely :)
i know what you mean about the weather I've been finding it hard to get outside after dark without freezing!
-
looking good 8)
-
thanks sammy, john few more pics of the dash, I haven't played with bog for years
-
Excellent job it looks really good :)
-
Thats comming along a real treat ;) ;) :D
-
borrowed this hole punch from work I was thinking of using a holesaw to cut holes for the big grommets on the commodore wiring loom but this was much easier and neater cuts a perfect hole with no sharp edges
-
Hey Phill, i have been looking at getting one of these. H&F have them for a good price, but also looking at a 10ton bench press, question is can you use or get the dies for the hole punch to work in the bench press, 1 tool 2 functions ?? also if i went the hole punch can you get a large range of hole sizes as an accessary or do the dies come in the standard sizes for grommets and so on ?? and finally what is the steel thickness limit on the punches, i normally work with 1mm and 1.2 mm sheet steal, but with my hand controls for the buggy i was working with 3 and 4mm flat bar.
george
-
Hi George standard hole sizes in the kit are 60,49,43,34,28,22 mm,I think you can get square dies,1.2mm thick will be fine but I recon you might be pushing it with 4mm? not sure of the limits the electrician's use on thin cabinets
the ram on this sucks in most presses push out so i don't think you could combine the two?
hope this helps.
-
hi buga's now that winter is over and its wormed up iv been playing with the hole in the floor and other stuff here's some pics
i folded a new floor member which became part of the cover mount and some other angles for the rest of the cover mount also i cut into the fire wall a bit so had to fill that in
-
Bloody hell, nice work, nice and clean
I like the yellow colour as well
-
cheers Gunning i still cant decide on a colour yet
-
using some aluminium to make a template for the eng cover good old gaff tape, i modified the cruise control cable bracket and mounting point on the throttle control thing, rotated the hole thing 90 degrees so it will fit under the cover, modifyed the fire wall and pedal box for the vt-vz booster and got the boys at work to machine a sleeve with a flat tab on the end for the pedal connection
-
looking good man :)
cant go without cruise control, that's the cherry on top :)
I like the commodore shifter cover! and I also love the crow cams sticker on the back window :)
-
Hey mate my name is Paul I've been hunting a beddy the past 8 months I was wondering if you know of any for sale please contact me call or text me on 0438 863 323 cheers
-
cheers Sammy yes cruise control was a must, i made this jig to form the radius's on the ends of the shifter cover so the black cover tongue thing on the shifter can bend down as you change gear, bend a bit push through a bit bend a bit and so on
sorry Paul can't help keep looking mate you'll find one
-
reminds me of how I work in my shed, make little things to do stuff :) I've done a lot of sheet bending along the top of the bench edge with g clamps and lengths of angle iron and such :)
when you don't have the tools or room and money to get them sometimes you just have to improvise :)
-
hi buga's been playing with the front brakes
I copied Reid's conversion using vn front hubs, cut the disc of and machined to fit inside a vt-vz front disc
also used the same outer bearing that Sammy found with the smaller OD size
thanks Reid,Sammy for the info, that's what's grate about this site all the differant ideas and info
next is the plate to hold caliper on
-
OK so I got the caliper plate sorted the boys at work machined one face on the plate to ensure the caliper mounts square with the stub after oxy cuttig, they also did a bit more machining on the in-err side of the hub so it doesn't foul on the caliper plate, and so the bedford bearing seal fit's into the Vn hub.
-
few more pics, I'm pretty happy with were the pads sit on the disc after a bit of head scratching haha
-
looking good phil!
-
Cheers Sammy
couple of pics here, once I was happy with how much I'd ground off the the stub axle,Thanks again Sammy for the info, I made a pattern of it to grind the same amount off the other side
-
thats a good comparison, i knew i ground 1-2mm off but didn't really have any way to visually see the before and after!
-
what harness ae you using to get the buick running.......v6 conversions or your own...
-
I'm using the complete vn loom out of the donna car, that's why I changed the dash using the vn instruments so it all plugs straight back in, I'm trying to keep cost's down and use what I already have pretty mush all vn ruining gear into the Bedford
-
Hi Phill,
I used all the vn loom wiring made it easy for all the switches and instruments to match in, cluster just plugs in. Had to extend some wires and shorten others but everything works. Having said that I like and used the vs dash and cluster as well as the steering column,. Vs also plugs straight in to the same 3 plugs of vn BUT THE WIRING IS DIFFERENT. There are 3 or 4 earth and power wires that are different and the cluster will start to smoke,. 😖 Yes found that out first hand, fortunately not to mutch damage 😀 only have to work out the headlight and wiper wires to get everything working correctly. The wiper plug fits the beddie wipers and it works on slow/fast/ intermittent.
Keep up the good work so far.
Julian
-
thanks Julian
yes I'm no auto electrician that why I'm using the vn loom it should all just plug back into it's self, I used the vn
steering column, will post some pics soon
cheers
-
looks good mate love the progress pics
-
thanks vn304
it was always going to be a long term project, something to play with when i have some spare time
-
yeah i know the feeling i am about to start rust repairs on my jumbo it has A fair amount and i want mine ready for rego by mid next year mine is going to be a 9 seater v8
-
hi buga's its been a while few pics here
I fitted the steering Coulomb from the vn and offset the bottom mount so with the offset's of the engine and Coulomb I have enough room for my foot
also fitting ve commodore power steering
-
I lengthened a vn commodore diff long axle into short side milled a Chanel into the sleeve in case the oil didn't go over it
-
Well done with your progress thanx for sharing your pictures 😊😊😊
-
thanks Wendy & Ray
chipping away at it having a tinker every now and then I enjoy it plus the thought of driving it is pretty cool, happy to share info most of the stuff im doing came from info on this site I recon BUGA has made it a lot easier
-
😃😃😃👍👍👍
-
good work there, I like the idea of the VE rack, the length looks pretty right!
-
thanks Sammy
I got the ve rack sitting pretty much were the bedford one sat (height and spacing off the crossmember)
the length of the ve rack is narrower so I will be putting spacers on both ends the same as Busy did to his transit rack will post pics of them and mounting brackets when I get it all sorted
