Title: fuel / gas usage
Post by: johnb44 on October 21, 2014, 06:28:31 PM
just wondering what sort of mileage other bedi owners are getting as mine is pretty high for a 253 v8 @ 3km per litre  :'(

I was worried as to what mine would be once she was on the  road but I was pleasantly surprised
Running a 5 liter V8 EFI commodore motor through a 700 turbo 4 speed box into a 9' diff with a ratio of 2.7,I'm getting around 14-15 liters per 100 (6-7 km/liter) @ 100km/h
Revs are 1750 rpm and she just purrs along , I have no doubt that if I were to cane it it would drop to silly numbers.
There is enough grunt in her to get Mr plod seriously angry.

I get 82kms per $7.59
In my green n white poptop
I filled up at blackheath the other night and then filled up
Again when I got home.
Took $7.59 to top it back up to full.

hi guys ... aaah internet properly again...  ;) miss me??  ;)   "ol futile", has three gas tanks (dedicated )  an 85, 70 an 55 lt i think...   ::) an get round about 900 clicks  at 100km at 2700 revs out of them combined    so round 4.5 km per lt  bump her up to 110km , different story. much thirstier n 3100 revs. n towing ha  :P economy out the window.  :'(  what gas system do u run john? as in carbie mixer, the 253 in mine runs a newgen mixer  on top , looks like a overlarge air filter if u know what imean... there a good economical mixer  i found for a V8

So most of you know by now that my van gets pretty poor gas mileage. On the recent Brits at the Beach trip we averaged 22 litres per 100km, that works back to 4.5 kilometers per litre. I must admit that I was giving it the boot at times. I'm running a Chev 350 in front of a TH350 auto box and a 3.0 diff ratio. She does 2700 RPM at 100km per hour. My carb is a Quickfuel 580CFM with vacuum secondaries.

Stu has recently converted his van from a 3.51 diff ratio to 3.0 and on a recent round trip of about 240km he returned an average fuel consumption of 10.8 litres per 100km or 9.25 km to a litre. He admits that his top speed is around 90km per hour. He is running a Ford 302 in front of a C4 3 speed and a Holley two barrel carbie. Pretty good consumption considering that our vans are as aerodynamic as a house brick.

Thats the beauty if a V8 Gordon, that extra power has a price.
But ive noticed with  my V8,s that if i drive them like an old man
They get pretty good fuel economy
As long as the ratio,s and other ingredients are working together,
My green poptop is a worn out old 202 , and im going a V8 as soon as  possible,
Buga the economy i want the power,  :)
In my parts shed ive got
 a std black 202, with a trimatic,
worked blue 202, with a 4 speed,
Worked 186, with a 4 speed,
And a
Worked red 202, with a 4 speed,

An old school engineer/mechanic was telling me the other day
That a 6 can go just as good as a V8,
Im not exactly sure if its true,
But if it is im seriously thinking i might stay 6 cylinder to save the floor space and
Save the engineers fee,s.
Ive gotta have a bit more of a chat with that fellow.

You can't beat the sound of a rumbling V8 Marty and compared to my original Vauxhall 4 cylinder engine the V8 gives me a level of driveability and reliability that I could never get out of the 4 cylinder.

Its quite clear from looking at my exhaust outlet that my van is running overly rich at the moment. I've been to see a few local V8 specialists seeking advice, but all they want to do is charge me heaps to put it back on a dyno. I've now ordered a good old Gunson colourtune kit from the UK and am going to play around with my jetting and mixtures. I don't reckon I can make it any worse than it is and I'll hopefully get to learn a bit about carbie setups at the same time.

thanks guys I can go back to the mechanic now with some more info , as im debating on how to build up my 308 as ill possably go injection or straight gas if I can find a few gas tanks to go where the fuel tank is

currently running the 253 with 2 barrel Stromberg carbie on fuel and gas , with the 15 inch wheels 100kph = 2200 revs so that can improve when I fit the turbo 700  :)

Being on  "club rego" I have to be on petrol (and as left factory). On a recent long trip, I averaged 18 MPG (or 6.25 km/l) with the 186 and sitting on 80k ... And I am sure there are some "engine issues" I need to deal with, like a cam or lifters that are "stuffed".
3.5 diff and about 2300 rpm..

Towing a car trailer (returning with my red tray top on the trailer  ;D ;D ;D) between Melbourne/Adelaide, fuel usage was between 3.5 and 5.6 k per l

And I too need a rolling road to tune my beast. Thinking of just replacing the cam & lifters beforehand, as may cost less than time on the dyno.....

As for 6 vrs V8.... Marty, cut the floor.....

Yeah your prob right Russell,
I recon i will cut the floor,
How do you know if a cam or lifters are stuffed?

My truck runs a 308 on straight gas, bit of a cam trimatic and 3.55 diff gears. The previous owner told me he'd worked out consumption at 25l/100km which is a little more than Skippy's 253 uses - a bit less than yours. He took me for a test drive when I was buying it and he pretty much held it flat most of the time, hard acceleration, late braking and all the things you don't do for economy. He told me that's how he always drives.
I haven't done the sums myself yet but I reckon I do a lot better than him, driving sedately... most of the time ;). Most of my driving is around town which doesn't help either.
I reckon the overdrive will improve things for you for sure

There is a company here in South Africa that manufactures a throttle body and fuel injection stup that replaces the 4 barrel square bore carb on any V8. The distributor also gets replaced by an electronic setup and fuel management system, making it tuneable on your laptop. A friend running a 383 stroker Chevy with Turbo 400 box and 3.08 diff. has this setup replacing a 750 double pumper Holley. He saw 17% improvement on performance and a fuel consumption of 10km/l. at 125km/h. That is with a 250kw (335hp) in a '72 Camaro. Not sure what your exchange rate is, but might be worth looking into.

yeah holley used to make a "pro-jection" kit that sounds similar to that .... not sure if they still make it or not though but I have seen a few carby style EFI options for older motors.

just on the 6 vs 8 talk, when i replaced the 6 with a 253 trimatic in my van i saw a fairly substancial improvement with fuel econ. the 6 was tired and the 8 is not bad but its not a new motor and blows a tiny bit of blue smoke occasionally but i was quite impressed that i get better econ, same diff ratio 3.5 i have a 3.08 to put in it at some point to hopefully improve econ again. i do like the towing grunt it has with the 3.5 thou.

Our 202 with genie extractors with standard carbi inlet manifold gave us 23 liters per 100km at average 115 km/hr
then Ray modified an EFI inlet manifold with same extractors and we got 17.5 litres per 100km at average 115km/hr
we now have both modified inlet and exhaust manifolds on the 202 with a turbo added to the mix...
we are yet to work out the LPG usage ...havnt been on an road trip yet...i feeel it may be reduced a bit more ...will update as soon as we work it out
