Title: Turbo 202
Post by: wendyh on June 15, 2014, 03:57:26 PM
So after playing with the modified EFI manifold and variable venturi ....we still feel we can get more out of the 202...
...so a turbo sounded like the next step.  ;D ;D ;D
Ray has been very busy grinding and welding manifolds for a R33 nissin turbo which can be mounted  off to the side and under the engine cover.
its a huge job and Ray has been pacing himself and this is where he is up to so far.

nice work Ray, im sure it was only a week or two I spoke to you (at DSR) and at that stage I don't think you'd started fabbing it up!

I know first hand what a turbo can do to a 202 and you wont be disappointed!

I've just put my head back on my motor and nearly ready to go back in the race car, so heres some inspiration for you :)

ok lately we have been gathering various hoses , gaskets and a blow off valve.
today Ray has been busy welding an extension to the torana sump  to increase the oil capacity.
looks a little bit funny but will do the job well and wont be seen  unless your on your kness with bum in the air  ;D

Hey Wendy...How much extra oil does that give ya? :-\
Title: Re: Turbo 202
Post by: wendyh on July 13, 2014, 10:34:12 AM
dunno yet John defs heaps more oil.... will let you know when we fill it up  ;)
forgot to say Ray got the rounded extension bit off a friend who makes sumps for engines going into boats...since the hull of the boat is curved.

great work Ray! I reckon theres a good 2-3 ltrs more capacity there!

Another turbo beddy! Nice work  :)
You won't be disappointed, the torque these little motors produce with boost is very impressive.

Earlier you said you were going draw through? Personally I think that's a very bad idea, especially with LPG.
Blow through would be a much better option and there are plenty of LPG setups that are capable of this when done correctly.
Personally I went with the Gas research carb and b2 convertor, and am very happy with the result.

Another good idea which would have saved me a great deal of work had they been available earliier are these copper manifold gaskets.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOLDEN-6-179-186-202-Copper-Intake-Manifold-Gasket-9-Port-Head-TURBO/171387126390?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140107090050%26meid%3D8390238247552806308%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D20140107090050%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D171378105094 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOLDEN-6-179-186-202-Copper-Intake-Manifold-Gasket-9-Port-Head-TURBO/171387126390?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140107090050%26meid%3D8390238247552806308%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D20140107090050%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D171378105094)

I've lost count of the times I've  burnt out manifold gaskets before I fitted a copper one. The standard ones just aren't up to the task.

interesting about the gasket, I've been racing with a turbo 202 for a few years now and I have never had an issue with the intake/exhaust gaskets failing! .... but mine is a blue motor so maybe they are different, I use the metal faced gasket on the inlet/exhaust and its worked fine! wish I could say the same for head gaskets!

but I definitely have to agree of the performance gains from a turbo :)

I've put it down to having higher exhaust temps due to LPG . On my beddy after 1000 kays the composite manifold  gaskets end up turning into carbon around the exhaust ports. The head gets so hot that it has burnt the paint above the exhaust ports right off!

Have never had an issue with head gaskets though, 10 psi is fairly modest boost.

Ok the extended sump was painted and ready to go in as well as the extended oil pick up.

Ray went to fit the sump and it hit the cross member @$!&%$! was what came out of the shed when i dared to venture up there to see how he was going...why oh why didnt i just keep it standard was his grumbling and complaining...everything is a bloody stuff around and never straight forward on a beddy.  :(
...so the steering had to be dropped  to give access and a thin slither had to be taken away from the crossmember to get the sump in. And also had to jack the motor right up to the floor to give room to get the sump in too.

And to answer all your questions ...it took  9 litres of oil to fill up the  extended sump  :D

we also fitted a standard JP oil pump and took her for a test run.....wow no oil leaks!

looking forward to doing the wollongong van run next weekend!

yeah nice work! but I don't understand why you had to lower the steering ? or was that just to get it in ? I thought the only part of that modified was the rear ?
Title: Re: Turbo 202
Post by: wendyh on August 19, 2014, 03:29:27 PM
yeah Sammy it was  just to get it in  ;)
Thanx Frank & Rotti ...yep Ray is pretty handy with a welder!  :D
the curved bit came from a fellow who marinanises engines for boats and he makes new sumps with that style to suit the bottom of the hulls.
I do hope the rest of the fit goes more smoothly.  ;D

Its turbo time !!!!! [/size]  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ray put the turbo, manifolds and all the pipes on the 202 today!!
wooo hoooo!

The first vdeo is the inital start up, with no muffler attached yet!

http://youtu.be/7Z16UQ_maZU

The second video is seeing what boost she is putting out....its noisy as we havent hooked up the muffler and the white smoke it the paint on the new exhaust manifold...the turbo boosting at 6 PSI.

We took her for a 140km run today...woohooo! yep gave her some get up and go with 7.5 PSI . The LPG converter didnt like the blowoff valve so its gone...so she sounds pretty noisy. our sone Luke in the supra couldnt help himself..lucky Ray still has to fine tune setup yet it was very noticable on the hills...no need to knock her back a gear.

hey restoreid you got that manifold polished yet , we have the turbo off
at the moment, it has burnt the paper out of the manifold gasket in 400km
so we have a copper gasket on order from sonic injection should solve the
problem  ,but we are very happy with the increase in torque on the  hills
