Title: 351 cleveland V8 and C6
Post by: Marishka on January 12, 2014, 11:19:26 AM
Not sure if anyone will be able to answer this but here goes.

Has anyone ever put or know of a cleveland 351 and C6 into a SWB
Beddy?
If so would it still be legal in todays engineering requirements.
If so has anyone got any pictures of fitment or
Templates of mounts etc?

If not whats the largest V8 legally alloud in a street reg SWB in
NSW?

Cheers marty

I have no idea, but I am sure you could have a reasonably arguable position to install, as it would put out in the standard form you are installing, much less than a gen 3 chev with efi etc.  ;D  Just make it looks stock til the rego is done and then upgrade it if required. As far as I'm aware, it's all about power to weight. And I am sure a cast iron 351 would weigh a ton more than any chev gen 3, helping your argument. From a US engine book I have rates a 351 @ 285 HP, while a similar capacity gen 3 starts at over 300 and goes quickly to over 400 for standard motors and 500 + for the vette versions.

the stupid thing about it is that power doesn't come into it, its a calculation of weight of car multiplied by a number which I can't seem to find now, which gives a max cubic inches capacity that you can have!

Hi marty, you wont have a problem with the engine capacity as its a commercial vehicle (i just put a 327 in a 850kg 'pickup')

the problem you will strike is that they have just brought in new brake testing rules that a bedford will unlikely pass. I'm about to take the 28 chev through this and I'm pretty nervous it will fail.

my van required huge pedal effort even with the vented HQ discs and the max is something like 65kg ish, which is a lot, but now they do fade tests, spike tests, open circuit tests etc  >:(

will get in touch after i take the chev through and let you know how bad it is, but I would hold off on any engine capacity increase for the time being.

G/day Greg,
Hope you had a good xmas n new year.
Sounds good, send me some pictures of the 28 chev,

As usual That didnt take you long to build, :)

It will be a while before i get into the blue van coz i have the 6 wheel Hz
And bought a Wb ute with a worked blue 202, 4 sp.
So they will be in front of blackonblue (bob).

Plus ive got the 351 cleveland JG33 GT motor On ebay for sale
At the moment, if it sells ill just get a 308 or 350 put in bob.

Cheers marty

So the recond  351 cleveland JG33 n C6 is for sale ,
It would make a good hotrod motor or f100 etc

why not the sb chev as they are so perfect for the beddie because they are narrower and can but not recommended be mounted to the std mounts (I personally think they need to sit back and lower a couple of ") which is also very straight foward with the chev..

just my 2c..   ;)

Hi Beddites,
Following the thread then found the e-bay link. that is my van, bought recently from Sydney, drove up to Brisbane, went well, a little slower than I thought. Has a low diff ratio, used to tow a bobcat I was told.

A bit of rust , nothing as bad as what Ive seen on site and the drive train is quiet, a few leaks, but no need for drivetrain overwork. A slider, coupla cracks under and rides a bit rough. Have bought a slider for parts. Will get under for some photos.
Im IT slow but learning. Cheers, downhill, Brisbane.

A bit more,,
Yes 351 Cleveland on gas, ( gas is for stoves, its going on juice after rego) a C6 auto 3 speed with a B&M shifter and 9 inch diff. The diff has walked forward on the left leaf, maybe time to re leaf, Give me time and pics will come.

You gotta push uphill to get the downhill thrill!!

Cool, i might revisit the idea, and take some measurements
Wonder what the differences of 351 ford clevo to 308 holden will be ?
I know im gunna need a 9" for sure
The borg warner aint gunna handle it.
To be sure to be sure
