The ecconomy part is my pushy and blades that I use to get around town. When I get it back on the road in the new year (fingures crossed) I'll have a go at answering this again.

bedford diff possibly hiway as it will do over 140 if your game but takes a bit to wind up
14x7 215/65 35psi
can vary a great deal
fuly loaded with band gear @ under 100klm/h on open hiway about 13Lt/100ks
empty around town 32Lt/100ks
empty on hiway 12Lt/100ks
stop/starting really kills the economy thats why i think it`s hiway diff . not a bad crusier specially if your not in a hurry

78 CF Long Wheel Base
I have a Blue 202 with 65,000 clicks on it.
The head has been modified and it has larger valves fitted.
It has also been setup for gas with ACL Race Bearings and Pistons and Chromoly Rings.
I will be going to gas in the new year - STRAIGHT GAS that is.
The rest of the engine is setup as follows:
- Extractors
- Electronic Distributor
- Standard Varajet Carburettor
- Standard 14" rims
- Borg Warner 3.89:1 Diff centre (soon to be 3.23)
- Running Regular Fuel
The tank takes 50 litres and I can get between 250 and 300 km's on it depending on how I drive.
It drinks like a fish!
Current economy is around 20 litres / 100 km's
The diff ratio combined with the shitty standard carby = poor economy. I have the diff gears here
ready to go in so I will let you all know how much it improves with the 3.23 ratio.
The next step will be to go straight gas as the head is ready for it - just have to find someone
that isn't going to rob me! All the quotes I have received so far are ridiculous and they use the
fact that it is a Bedford, old vehicle blah blah blah to justify some ridiculous price for a simple
gas conversion. All of the people that I have spoken to have been jokers - seriously kidding themselves.

1976 shortwheelbase van.
has a red 202
4 speed Australian g/box.
borgwarner highway diff.
std 186 carby n manifold.
electric dizzy
extractors and good cond, quiet exhurst.
twin batteries. boat isolater switch fitted to switch from 1 batt to 2 or both at same time. or full off. solar trickle charge system fitted.
std bodyshape.
just carry spare points dissy, leads, new high spark coil, new spare water pump n gasket. heater and rad hoses,10ltrcar fridge, jack, toolkit holding all nessessary tools 4 roadside repairs within reason. spare under back, decked out inside
14in sunraysiers, new front tyres.back 70% all hancooks.
no roofracks at present, (so no wind drag),
getting LPG conversion in march 2009, will b dual fuel.
so exess weight isnt a real issue.
( will edit this all tomorow with diff ratio, and fuel economy of how many kms per litrein present state.. will do a drip feed 1 litre system and measure kms.)
then change carby, manifold and post difference)(just give me a few days, lol, weeks maybe, )
.no oil leaks at all, ask ben,dry as a desert under whole van.
new clutch p/plate. rase,
, not sure of ratio, will look tomorow
not sure of kms on motor,
, old leads, havnt looked at spark plugs for about a year.
has a crappy 186 carby, can tell from inlet manifold,
i drive prietty calmly as it still has drum front brakes, always leave 4 car distance in front at 60 kms, 10 car distance at 100 kms an hr. im in no major hurry.
might do a HQ disk conversion soon,
have a fully recond red 202
carby and new inlet maniflod just waiting to go on.
might change it over 2 a auto soon 2 as im over changing gears and clutches, gettin lazy in my old age, plus it will be easyier on my left leg n arm.
100 dam gearchanges 2 shitme, i mean 2 sydney n back.
auto just click it into drive and steer n use the brakes, less stress.

gday! great topic as yous know im always on about fuel economy!

holden banjo 3.08
14in widened wheels 7/215 front 8/235 rear (wanting to go 15in if had the money)
sits at 2700rpm @100 (those with tachos please add as im very interested in others rpms!)
fully loaded i was getting 4.5kms/litre 5 if i really cruised it. many variables including the weather and road conditions.. hilly , headwind etc.
played with the gas mixtures heaps, running it at max power cut about 70kms off my range but was great up hills!
john abbott any idea what yours is in kms/litre for us young uns! and with the 2.78 how does it take off with a load?
marky do you have a tacho i wonder what your rpms are at 100 with the 4 speed coz with my 50 litre tank i get 250 max on gas so your getting 130kms more on petrol! quite a difference!
strez yours sounds quite economical too! if i convert to litres/100km its around 20...
ben does yours run fine on both fuels? im thinking of going back to duel fuel. people say you have to compromise with the tuning but im not sure it matters with our old holden motors. i had a hr ute that ran perfect on both.
jock your economy is like mine! so it will be interesting to see how it changes with the new diff.. poor thing must be screamin at 100!
marty your van is almost exact like mine besides the gearbox so im interested in your future results, i agree with changin gears im glad mine was auto on our big trip but i would love a celica box! had one in my hr and it ripped!
take it easy!
-
hey there does anyone know how to work out how many revs you should be doing at 100 with direct drive with whatever diff youve got?
ben
-
yeah, the revs x the diff ratio devided by the litre = thethingybob ;D
marty
-
Well I can't "MODIFY" my own post to include that my van is running a 3 speed Trimatic Gearbox so I will have to add this post as a reply.

ok here,s the test equipment i knocked together.

the 2 bottles are 600ml. 1 full and 400ml in other = 1litre
(http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll265/marty23121961/Picture378.jpg)
i did the test twice, starting off and reaching 80kms p/h on a straight level road. not slowing down at all......
it used exactly the same amount both times .
i got exactly 6kms per 1 litre, that sucks, i was at least hopeing for 50 kms per litre. hahahahaha,
will do the exact same test again when i change to the recond 202 carby and new manifold.

jock, ring the gas conversion guy that i gave u the number of,
$2,100 for conversion , then $2000 back from medicare= $100 for conversion.

Marty,
I will call him in a couple of weeks when I get back from holiday - hope he doesn't
hike his prices in the meantime.
I'm worried he won't have what I want - a quality system, not a dinosaur setup!
But I will call him and let you know how I go.

anyone looked at a hho generator?
the technology is getting better all the time and one fella at the nats was running one in his bedford.
ben would remember the name of the van.
the driver claimed a big percentage in fuel savings and you can make them yourselves.
-
wazt a hho generator? ???

i run one in mine..
they do make a diffrance to rpm & MPG
David
-
are you running a wet cell or dry cell?
im looking into dry cells, smartscarecrow has almost got a 3h generator running smooth.
its still attached to the house mains but he will be able to run the gas of the generator soon i hope.
http://www.youtube.com/user/SmartScarecrow (http://www.youtube.com/user/SmartScarecrow)
we have spare power so if we can change it into a gas that helps fossil fuel burn faster and cleaner then why not?

Fuel Economy- yes this is my third beddy that I am looking to buy .. and this time I am looking at practicality .. .. the guy says it is getting 5kms to the litre on both fuel and gas .. thats on a good run ... is that good ?
I have no idea what my old girls used to do .. they just ran well and I enjoyed the journey ..
It has a 253 V8 on dual fuel ..
my other was a 179 and a 186 red engine ..
What do you guys reckon?
cheers
joe.

Joe
I have a 1975 swb camper,186, trimatic, 3.55 HZ diff, dual fuel, I run it mainly on gas and get 6klms per litre
Cheers
Joe

MY beddy now gets 420-450 kms a tank
Blue 202 w weber carby
Celica 5 speed
Borg warner Diff
16 " Tyres

Joe
here my 2 cents worth
5 k per litre on gas @60 cents per litre =$12.00 per 100k
having said that $12.00 petrol @ $1.25 =9.6 litres
Economy equivalent to 9.6 litres per 100 k out of a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick outhouse being pushed along by a carbed dinosaur v8 (253) is pretty good!
-
my new van. lwb.
307 chev, turbo700 with lockup tourqe converter in 4th. 9inch diff 3.5:1
2,100 rpm at 100 in lockup.
at this stage it does 5.5km to litre or 15mpg.. on straight gas. untuned,
the van is setup for economy,
ben
-
MM.. okay .. thanks guys!
This forum rocks!
Though even with all this .. I found a deal breaker in the new beddie LWB dream!!
After staring for yet another hour at the pictures .. dreaming how to set it all up perfect ..
I finally noticed that the engine hub ... customised to fit over the big fat V8 .. has taken up all the space where the clutch would have been .. and hence there is no room for the left foot ..
A trifle matter in the whole scheme of things .. but if your leg is cramped up under you each time you drive .. I cant imagine enjoying the journey all that much .. and if I didnt want to enjoy the drive ... well.. I'd get a nissan urvan or something ..
so .. I am back on the hunt .. but still in mourning for this beautiful LWB Dual Fuel .. reconditioned engine .. lovely machine that would have been just perfect with a good interior rebuild ... which is all I want to do this time .. set it up for baby and we .. ..
Please keep posting any LWB's you see for sale .. especially those perfect but for the interior!!
Cheers guys!
Joe.

Joe
if you have given up on the duel fuel v8 lwb
share
someone here may like!
-
my tow project has a 253 V8 AND a 4 speed, there is a clutch between the steering column and the engine cover, 1st V8 Ive had thats got room for a clutch, just don't wear big size 14 shoes when driving cause shes a tight fit ;D
-
hey joe,
from what ive seen the best way too keep leg room next to the steering colum is
1. move the motor back and drop it, much better handling also, more like a car.
2. run a chev not a holden holdens are much more of a wider V as apose to a chev which is more like a Y. even the small block 400 i have is much better fit in the beddy than a 253 holden.
3. move the motor to the left on the crossmember probably easier than the previous 2.
when it stops raining ill take some photos of my setup, its got heaps of room for your left foot, its a mix of 1. and 2. thou..
cheers

Hi Hotrod,
you are right .. I must share it ..!!
He is holding it for me right now as I have been uber keen.. and there is only one other person interested ..
He is asking too much ..and he knows it ..he says its cause he has seen others advertised at $12,000 .. so thinks 8,000 is good... but i cant find any at that price .. so not sure if he is accidently looking at bus prices?
anyway ..
It just needs a new bonnet .. and interior redone ..
But after checking that Yellow LWB camper that someone posted on ebay for sale .. that looks like it went for $3500 ..
well... I am chasing to see if that really sold or not!
anyway.. i need a few days to move on .. i fell pretty hard for this one .. price negotiation was all that was standing in my way before i found the squashy foot issue .. still not quite over it ..
anyway
It is not going anywhere just yet .. he is not a computer man .. so reliant on phone to sell .. and lives in a one horse town 100kms from any main town ..
here is the link .. will post also in for sale .. there a few others in trading post as well..
if you need extra pictures .. let me know ..I have 5 that his sone sent me .. waiting for more ..

Yeh . I saw that one .. but its not on gas .. or diesel ..
so a bit hesitant to sign on for one that needs more than the interior refurbished ...
only got one hand these days..
also I have a strange aversion to white ... and a paint job is another expense and job that I am not up for ..
am watching it on ebay though ..
may change but I am holding out for the dream-girl ..
cheers.
