Title: Tail lights
Post by: ShaneJ on July 31, 2008, 08:14:23 AM
I want to put some new lights in the back of my van but I cant decide what to do. I want to something kinda retro/industrial, so I'm thinking LED's of some description.

I've been looking at using 3 of the Hella Matrix lights either side. 2 stop/tail and 1 indicator.

Do you think it would look ok?

Check out busy's website. He has done something with lights similar to the long led lights.

love that grey van  :)

what about the reverse light, wont you need one for that?

Can just use the indicators for the reverse lights if need be.

I was thinking about fitting a reverse light down near the number plate though. But I'm not sure about this yet.

Hey Shane....I just had a thought. What if you used the rear number plate holder from a xd or xf falcon station wagon ? I think that the holder has 2 reversing lights already built in. cheers.....John Abbott ;D

I am doing the same as the grey van but mounting them lower because i have a gullwing door and dont have the hinges in the way and using one brake/tail and indicator. I was going to use the indicator as reverse light but might have to check out the ford number plate holder.

Hey Craig, I realise this is quite an old thread but I've been trawling through looking for pics of tail lights and the grey van really struck me.  Do you know who's van that is (the grey LWB photo file name 'jill's bedford') with the recessed round stop/tail and indicator lights?  ??? I've been really struggling to figure out what size the lights are and what make.  Hella do an 83mm diameter round like those but that seems too small and they don't seem to come with a rubber bung and are very very expensive.  The only other similar lights I could find were all over 100mm which equates to at least 140mm diameter with bung and that is too big to fit comfortably in the flat area where the old lamp used to sit.  Any idea what they used and how they did it?  Any help would be much appreciated mate, cheers.

Cheers Ben, who's Olly?

I've measured out the 140mm diameter lights to try to fit them into the flat area the old lights are mounted in and there's not enough room.  2x100mm circles would fit just nicely, perhaps an 83mm lamp with rubber bung would be approx that size but the Hella lamps are $330 per pair!!  That's $700 just for lamps!  Considering you can pick up the 140mm (including bung) varieties for about $60 each it's a crazy price difference.

That's some snazzy work Dano, I'd like to see that all painted up :)

As for the Grey LWB, I've done a bit of checking and I reckon having the lights recessed like that would actually fail it according to design rules for side view unless you had secondaries on the side.

Bright Light Autoparts do a combination light that's like a nice update to the original tail light : http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-95478181056539_2044_39873335 (http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-95478181056539_2044_39873335)

Not too expensive, piece of piss to fit and easy to get replacements.  Seeing as my funds look to be drying up soon it could be the way forward.
