well after being bedford free for a couple of years now,
playing with an old v6 uc sunbird instead, I decided it wasn't quite.. vanny enough ;D.. introducing bedford number 3. Just a side doorless and windowless 78' with an ld28 and auto.
-
Welcome back Eric. When I saw your new van on TradeMe a few weeks back I thought it looked like a good deal. Not many vans around now that haven't been fitted with windows. The LD28 conversion gives you a measure of reliability and economy that the old slant 4 will never match. All the best with your new toy. Cheers Gordon

G'day Eric,
Nice...a '78 No Door. Congratulations, that's a good score. :)
-
Thanks guys, good to have a reason to visit the site again.. forgot how cool it was! So much information, and amazing photos of peoples labours of cf love.. and yes I'm quite suprised how well the van goes for a coalburner!
-
yeah nice straight van 8) nice score
did it have much rust?
-
Well, it is a bedford ::) not too much in the way of live rust, just needs a couply patches in one of the rear arches and one in the front doorframe, I'm sure I'll discover more though! Managed to re hang the front doors as they were on there pretty rough.. my back doors are toast, bit of a mystery looks like they've been stoved in at some point and then 'sculpted' out of bog which is cracking with age, so I'll be keeping eyes open for a new pair, there's a guy here in hamilton who makes all the glass flares, doors etc but id prefer some real ones as I prefer the look, if not the racket they make!
-
ahhh ok good she didnt have heaps of rust...i've got a good set of back doors sitting in shed....one has a tiny spot of rust...we replaced them with a fiberglass door that lifts up...so much quieter...now just got the rattles of the sliding doors ::)
well enjoy ur beddy :D
-
No good to me I'm in nz! Well actually in niue atm but that's another story ;D
-
If you get some crazy fool honking and waving at you in the van, it might be me as am moving down Hamilton. Not taking my vans though
-
Oh cool busy, what brings you to the tron? That's a shame, bedfords fit in well in the waikato ;D
-
An amazing woman brings me down, we hope to get a life style block in a couple of years (with min 4 car garage or barn) so will resume building more vans then, at the moment we have no where to put them. Small price to pay for a great future though.
-
Fantastic busy, all the best for the move and your lady love :) definitely a bit slower paced than the big smoke, though its certainly growing.. not that I'm a real estate expert or anything, but you'll find the best value for blocks is west of the city towards whatawhata, plus you get a good view of mt pirongia.. though that custom van of yours is about the best view around anywhere you go haha
-
Hey Eric, welcome back to the vanning lifestyle and the Bedford family. Great to see that van going to a good home. With more vanners setting up in the Hamilton area I feel the possibility of a new club coming on. Be good to have a few more Waikato members around. Take care and enjoy the new ride.
Cheers,
Garry.
-
thanks garry, yes it has been too long without one, hopefully I'll hold on to this one for a while! Still a little more work to do before terrorizing the streets, nothing particularly wrong with it but I'm pretty keen to get discs on the front and a coat of paint (nothing fancy) first.. I remember even 10 years ago cfs were not an unusual sight.. where have they all gone!
-
Hey Eric, I've got an HQ front end disk conversion that I no longer need that will probably get listed on TradeMe in the next few months. With it I've got a set of Bedford rear axles and drums from a standard Bedford 10 inch diff that have been changed to HQ stud pattern. This will allow you to convert to HQ stud pattern mags all round. Happy to give you first option before I list them. Let me know if you are interested. Cheers Gordon
-
Ooh yes please gordon, that would be fantastic!
-
I've even found the perfect hq wheels ;D
-
All good Eric. I'd rather that they went to a fellow enthusiast. I need to get my lower A arms modified to take my dropped spindles before I can pull out the HQ disk conversion. Shouldn't be too long now. I'll let you know. Do you know whether your existing rear axle is running 10 inch or 9 inch drums ? Cheers Gordon
-
cool gordon, that'll save me a lot of hassle :) no hurry, got plenty to keep me busy ;D hmm I'll give them a measure up when I get home, apart from the obvious ::) what's the difference between them?
-
Hi Eric, from memory, the easiest way to tell is to climb under the van and check how many bolts hold the drum backing plates onto the axle. If it has 6 bolts then its a 10 inch setup. If it has 4 bolts then its a 9 inch setup. Hope this helps. Cheers Gordon
-
9" has the square type backing plate, and the 10" is round and looks like it is built in.
9" diff plate in photo
(http://i956.photobucket.com/albums/ae41/Bas-NZ/IMG_04982.jpg)
-
Oh excellent, will do. Thanks gordon! :) thanks for the photo bas, hmm I've got the memory of a goldfish but I think in that case I might ??? Have 10", I'll have to check
-
Yes Gordon is right, if you have a diff plate like the one in the photo its a 9" anyway.
-
aah well I've found a couple of good pics elsewhere on the forum, if a 9" has a square diff housing, then mines definitely 10", more like this pic borrowed from aussieneil ;). (N.b subject to 100% margin of error, might go home and find I've actually got a transit haha :D )
-
Yes 10", but strange to be under a Mk1 as these came out in the Mk2 van and maybe the Mk1 Jumbo?, a heavy duty diff than the 9" but with the 10" diff you can't change the centre for a higher ratio.
-
Oh sweet ;D yes I recall my 85 lwb had the same diff, I was always a bit leery about it sitting behind a 308! Hmm another beddy mystery, Its a laterish cf1 I suppose.. either that or my original diff is lying in a paddock near taumarunui haha
-
New roof vents in yesterday, jeez did I feel guilty taking a saw to an original body! Rained heavily last night and no leaks.. that weren't already there ;) .. anyway, back to the sanding!
-
Colorpack, now we are talking ;)
-
Hey erics8,
What kind of wheels are those on the van,
I like them but never got to find out the name.
Cheers
-
They were called Cheviot Turbo's over here.
-
haha just a spot of lacquer for the vent frames, im actually considering using epoxy rust paint for the van, i like the way it weathers... and the price! rims are cheviot turbo's, pretty common old things.. unlike the centrecaps which are a buga to find!
-
Hey erics8,
What kind of wheels are those on the van,
I like them but never got to find out the name.
Cheers
In Australia they are called Hurricanes and are still available for bedfords
-
Here you go mate - you want centre caps? try these guys:
http://www.mrlugnut.com.au (http://www.mrlugnut.com.au)
Got mine from there and so did Hobbit - about 15 bux each
-
Oh massive, thank you! I might have to get a lifetime supply ;D
-
Finally got my roof painted today, not too bad considering I haven't held a spray gun in half a decade Ireckon ;D now for the rest!
-
looks alright to me!
-
Done and dusted, not the flashest but tidy enough
-
Hey Eric that is an unusual colour. What's it called ?
Good job by the way.
Cheers
Gordon
-
Cheers gordon, I'll probably give it a wetsand and a couple more coats yet, the primer that was on it was pretty thin and I figure the more paint the better on a bedford! The colour I mixed up in me backyard out of red, yellow and black epoxy enamel, was a bit concerned id muck it up with brown being such a fickle colour but came out bloody nice I reckon, very 80s
-
Yea, I'm partial to the old school colours myself. Looks like its got a good shine on it too. Did you manage to get your back doors sorted ?
-
Yeah its shiny as, hopefully the sun will deal to that in short order ;D I ended up bogging the living daylights out of them, they look good but I'm still going to try and find some better ones eventually, a bit torn whether or not to go down the f/glass one piece road, I know it'd be a lot more pravtical (and quiet!) But I do want to keep the body fairly original
-
Can't beat Steal.. ;) but good option
-
Yeah bas that back end of yours looks tough as, id love to get a cf2/facelift cf1 swb v8 to make a bit of an easy roller, then id really be a slave to the gryphon!
-
Building a simple dashboard out of mahogany boards I found, jeez I wish id paid more attention in wood shop class ::)
-
Hey Eric, there is a guy on TradeMe down your way in Hamilton who reckons he has a set of mint back doors for sale. Immediately thought of you. Auction number is 636812209. Cheers Gordon
-
Cheers gordon, forgot to thank you actually, saw your email and was on to the guy in a flash haha going to go see what he's got next weekend :) anyone in north island wantd any bits while I'm there? In other news, dash I made is in and working, and I need a stiff drink!
-
bedfords.. why would you want to drive anything else!
-
Sweet! Are those me old rear doors? Thanks again for the extra 20 bucks too!
-
Hey matt nah they're my shabby old ones, I'm looking at getting your ones paneled in and bubble windowed haha! No worries man
-
Hey Eric & atk1,
What are you guys up to at Labour Weekend? There's a gathering of vanners happening at Ngatea for an awesome weekend, including a couple of cruises to popular local places and a 1/4 mile time trial on Saturday. If your keen to go let me know and I'll get you the details. Even if you can only make it for one of the days it would be good to have you meet a great bunch of like minded vanners.
LMK,
Cheers,
Garry.
-
looks sweet as eric!! the van looks awesome!
is your van lowered at the front? looks really low for a beddy.
cheers
ben
-
Cheers Ben, nothing flash but it'll do me ;D it actually hadnt occured to me, but it does sit a bit low at the front, hope my suspension isnt half collapsed aha!
-
Hi Eric, looks better than i did. Would be good to make contact seen we in the same town. My contacts are on trademe. Cf spoilers. Ray
