Post by: Bullstik on July 30, 2008, 08:53:14 PM
I never seen an introduction thread in the old forum and being new I thought this would be a good way to get to know all of us better,

Myself

I'm 35, cabinetmaker/ joiner in brisbane, bought my first bedford afew weeks ago. I been looking for the right one for afew years but settled fixing other cars like falcon's and f100's and torana's.

Top idea

I'm a 28 year old mechanic by trade but I am now delivering and installig fitness equipment. I've owned a few cars but have never
done one up, normally I just run them into the ground.  My van is the first ride I have owned that has been able to be reregistered, which that could be a sign I'm getting older or I'm sick of losing my licence (3 times now).   I have no real big plans for the van, just keep the rust at bay and keep it road worthy. I having to much fun driving it to take it off the road.

The green van is enginered for a 5 litre motor but is curruntly running a 186 auto and a modified diiff, Hq brakes all round and with what seems to be standard suspension.  I have sitting there ready to go a twin carb 202 manaul and chev diff waiting for some warmer weather to but it in. There is no body mods at the moment and other then a front spoiler, I'm not really planning on any.

My other ride is a kawasaki 98 ZX6R ninja

Hi all. First post on the new site. Looks great. Thought I'd go under a different user name on this site but it's one I use elsewhere and the avitar is the same as the old site so you should know me by now.

I'm 50 something, been in vanning since 1976 when I was a founder member of the first custom van club in NZ (Parlour Vans) and now president of same club. Also secretary/treasure of the Van Association of NZ (VANZ). First van was a '73 CF SWB called Windsong, running 283 chev etc. Current van is a '80 CF LWB running 350 chev etc called Genesis, currently undergoing some major interior mods and as usual taking far longer than it should.

I'm married with two almost grown up kids. I work as a trials officer/design engineer/project manager/section manager for Defence Technology Agency doing technical and scientific research for the NZ Defence Dept. Great job(s) and good fun.

Looking forward to a great time on this site and hope to help out where I can.

Keep on Truckin
Garry.

Okay I have been a vanner since Noah put mags and ostrich skin seatcovers on the ARK.
Cant remember how many Beddies I have had,but the last few years I have been into pickups of the rodded variety.  ;)
Made a number of trips to the USA to see some hot trucks and vans in recent times.
I dont have a van at the moment but when the right one comes along I will pounce.
Being divorced at 45 and living on my own makes it easy to start a project with out permission.
But no garage or patio will slow me down, but I will strike sooner than later.
Thanks for the new site and hope to see you's all in Geelong next year at the Nats.
Cheers Brian. ;D

Hi all i`m 35 and been a spraypainter in cairns for the last 15 years . was and still into bikes only owned two cars both beddys . first one was lwb registed in1999 (had it for about 2 years befor that as i bought it for $400 and it needed work) sold in 2003 after girlfriend bought a car .
missed it heaps so bought 2 swb in 2005 for $1000 , one was registed and after i fixed a few things got a r.w.c and transfered into my name. got given another one that was badly rusted but with disc brakes 308 turbo400 and 12bolt diff , rescued the running gear and ditched the rest . bought a town house so i gave the spare to a mate but unfortunatly he hasn`t done anything with it .

I race pocket bikes with my brother and use it to carry 4 bikes and tools once a month about 100klm away also play bass in a rock band and use the beddy to cart all the gear . i`m also into kite surfing and have done a few road trips in it .

never had a problem about not being able to take something cause theres not enough room  ;D
it`s a work in progress and i hope to have it finished in 2 years . the rust however will always be an ongoing problem

G'day all i've had my 1975 beddie for a few years now i bought it from some german backpacker in carins it had a very tired 186 & auto in it but it also had front discs; bullbar; full lenght roofrack; high ratio diff; 15'wheels ; sliding front doors ; good fun driven around in summer with the doors open. So i pulled the motor out and put in an RB30 & AUTO and rebuilt the front end and made a dash for the new gauges now it drives and handles very good i painted it myself so it looks like shit. I use my beddie every day and hope to do a 4x4 conversion on it when i can afford it . I also have a TRIUMPH TR7 V8 and CCM 644 DIRTBIKE i"m a sucker for pommy vehicles.

Hi My Name is Kirk,

I have a drinking pro...(oops wrong forum) scratch that:)

I love bedfords, and have done since i was 15/16, and im 31 or 32 when looking for my first car i wanted 1 and there was only 1 around and it was for sale at $6k (in Darwin) alas it was a dream as i had about $1500 to spend, now to give you some idea of my sick love for these cars, i was a 16yr with 3 cars i could pick from to buy 1/ HZ MONARO all original BUT in pieces, 2/ Torana sedan on the road and in good shape, 3/ a Nissan C20 Van, lime green with rego.  I brought the Nissam cause it was the closest thing to a beddy i could afford.

I recently purchased my first and hopefully my only beddy, there is alot of work and cost to be involved but my goal is to make her into a more modern MTV styled Themed van.

Ohhh i work in a call centre at morning and weekends and run Poker games on week nights.

g'day Eddy here, been into beddies for at least 30 years (oh my gosh that means I could have bought one new!) have owned around 12 in varying degrees of capitulation and returned most of them from the dead, had sad ones and bad ones, had ones that didn't last, had ones that others drove past and had ones that went very fast, got used to being asked "do you wanna sell her mate?" got used to the head turning, loved the moments when other beddie drivers gave a nod when passing, loved the times when we stopped and chatted, and may I say never sent one to the wreckers, I just turned late late very late 40ish (alright then 50, and I have to admit that only cause Benn was at the party!) have 3 boyz and not one of them wanted a beddie even when I offered it to them! anyways they are all grown up now and doing there own thing but somehow I think they are regretting taking the blk beddie on, I work in emergency services, carpenter by trade, into fitness and outdoor adventure sports, born in NZ and happily married and settled in Oz for past 26 years, don't believe I am a beddie addict but the missus will say otherwise. Current van is a camper that will more than likely be the last one (although one must admit that there is always room for improvement in ones life ... take that as a suttle hint missus, I still got one eye open for that dream beddie) , beddies in good condition are hard to find so decided to stay with what I got and rebuild as I please .... great to network with so many beddie owners, the buga site has been a source of information, encouragement and inspiration for me since its founding and the beddites on here are the real deal. The improvements are astounding, a huge thank you to the current beddites for putting so much work into developing this site  ;D   check out my gallery for pics old and new ..... and ...... keep on vannin

Hi all, i am a 43 yr young Truck/ van driver and in charge of our warehouse, we import Italian wines and beers. A radio/stereo fitter by trade for 17 yrs. Needed a change so did courier work for a while until i decided to get my truck licence about 8 years ago (wanted it when i was 12) Love the alcohole industry i am in now. I am founder and president of Diamond Valley Vanners, now in its 19th year, also president of Van Council of Victoria. Love my vans, have had i think 23 vans and i am sure there is more to come. I got interested in Bedfords when i first saw The Judge and Tabu. I guess i have been lucky with my vans as i have a very successful show van in Bad Company which i have had for 19 years. Had the opportunity many years ago to buy the Judge but the car yard dude would not trade the van i had on it, BUGA. Then about 10 years ago did buy it, wish i still had it but sold it to a mate to fund a trip round oz. About 5 years ago bought Mystic Fantasy from a member of our club who neglected it big time, i could not stand seeing what he was doing to it so i said give me your best price, got it  ;D. Now i also have the Victorian 3XY Coca Cola Easyroller which i found about 2 yrs ago, after 8 mths of negotiations the keys were handed over and now its in for a full resto, hope fully i will have it at the Van Nats. Want to get myself a LWB windowless with a V8 and on gas next for a daily driver. WOOHOO, luv vans  ;D

Hi Guys N Gals, Well I got the Beddy bug years ago as a teen but didn't get around to owning one until I was 39 years old. That was my first Motorhome and I used it for 4.5 months travelling down the East coast of Aus heading back to Tassie after 16 years on the big island! wow what a hoot of a trip!! I sold that one to a guy near Bennalla and pretty much immediately regretted it!! I'm 42 now and the time has come to go back to the mainland for work so I searched for another Beddy motorhome and searched and searched then one that took my eye turned up on ebay with all the bits I wanted 350 Chev, T400, gas and highway diff. Bought it for $9000.00 drove it up to the guys place in Bennalla that bought my first one and did a bit of work to make it safer to drive back to Tassie. The thing is a machine, it's 7.2m long and 3.2m high has a lazy back axle and sits on the highway at 100k with no drama, jump on the gas and away it goes, got 145klm/h on the Hume and it handled like a car!! Got heaps of strange looks from truckies as I passed them!!! hehehehe.
Well now it's sitting in the backyard with the interior gutted being slowly rebuilt. I've done all the mechanicals including a complete front end rebuild ( Thanks Benn for those upper and lower control arms ). I'm heading back to Mackay in QLD in 8 weeks so the pressure is ON now to get the inside back to livable.
I'm not working at the moment so everyday is Bedford day
This is my website where I have some pic of the first and the current one and a bit more about me and some of my other bad habits.
http://imaginocean.bigpondhosting.com/default.htm (http://imaginocean.bigpondhosting.com/default.htm)
Maybe I can catch up with a few of you guys on the way north.
Cheers, Clance

I'm Scott from the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.  I currently have a LWB which I bought off ebay from Queensland unseen.  Was a risk but I still love the look of her, she hasn't been touched since i've had her.  She has a 9" rear, chopped roof replaced with flat fibreglass, disc brake front and did have a 350 in her before I got her.  I have had built a tuff 400 chev with lots of chrome and have a mate who will build the T-400 for her.

Now problem is in the next few weeks i'm going to be working in W.A again, thats 4 weeks on and 1 week off.  Not to much time to play.  I may be looking for anyone interested in getting her on the road.

I'm Jeff. I'm 62. I'm a flooring contractor, Live in Wellington NZ. I'm a moderator on CF-UK.
Been into fast cars since my teens;  slowed down a bit over the last few years, but still managed to loose my license  by exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 k.
So thought I would drive something that was fun without going fast.....Hence the Beddie.
I set about restoring and modifying her, and the project got waaaaay out of hand. I mostly blame this site for that. Thanks guys!
I had a CF back in the 80s which I put a Valient slant six into...Nice, but the van was rough.... been driving Jappers since then.
I am happy  being here; I have learned heaps, and enjoy the friendship.  :)

I'm Adam - live in the Perth hills and work as a manager in local govt.  In my mid 30s and been into modifying cars etc for several years with a few different projects, mostly Jap imports as well as an old 1967 Datson Fairlady Roadster... but they're all gone now.  With those I was probably more the 'financier' than the modifier, as I don't know much about wroking on cars whatsover... so I thought a Bedford would give me a good base on which to learn all about it and build something I am a little more hands on with.  Got myself a 1977 SWB, plus just got a second SWB camper that will soon become parts on the wall of the garage.  Love the site and the helpful people on it, and glad to help out with some forum moderating.

Well hello

I'm in my early 50's, a single father of 4, with a few projects and hobbies, and to few time.

I have a SWB CF with a 202, aussie 4 speed, highway diff and seating for 8, it's sitting forlornly at the moment as I try to find time to give it some TLC.

Between Work, Kids, preparing for my Black Belt in Karate, and playing in the garage with my toys, I try to find time to suf the net.

With this new site running so well looks like some thing will have to give :(

Hey,

Brett from Melbourne here.  Recently got my '77 CF SWB to use as a daily driver....other car's a Lotus Elise which is awesome but can't carry quite as much as the Beddy.

Hoping to go a bit nuts on 70's stuff with the van, but currently working on making it as reliable as possible.... tick tick tick...

Work wise, own a little cocktail bar in Northcote and teach/coach Kendo (Japanese fencing) when not at work.  Recently married to a beautiful woman, who, when posed with the question "Baby, what would you say if I was looking at getting a van kinda like this...?" was supremely awesome enough to reply  "F#$k YEAH!"

Life's ok, despite my can of worms van, which is loved in spite of its can of wormness!

Cheers

I suppose I should have done this earlier but.. anyway here's my tale. I'm 47, live in Melbourne married with 4 kids. My daily drive is a 99 Prado, oh so comfy!!, I have a 76 CF Tray that will get done soon? The plan is V6 Twin Turbo's T700 auto 9" Diff HSV 330mm Front rotor 315 mm rears 18x8 HSV Senator rims Commodore dash. I have been accumulating the required parts for 6 months or so. just picked up another 9" housing to cut up. Also have a 73 Mini GT to resto. Just sold my 2 Fargos and 2 Prefect utes as I didn't have the time to resto them. Trail bikes, off road karts and a 20' ski boat with a 455ci Olds engine with a Ski Jet jet unit.

I'm a mechanic by trade and have worked in dealerships, private workshops and for my self. I have been a Service Manager a 3 Dealerships but got sick of the hassles of the job and staff.

I have an interest in computers and have a small home based business repairing them.

At present I own a 800sq foot factory that has my good stuff in but I'm also renting 2 more of the factories in the complex to hide.. house my ebay excesses form the missus. lol

I started working on CF's back in 78 as an apprentice and always wanted one but it was never the right time for it. I found my tray on ebay paid $1k with 10m reg, hey Ben not bad hey, drove it to  the factory where it has sat waiting for me to give it some TLC.

Cheers

Craig

Hey Garry got any pics with the motor in?  :o That is one cranken motor!

Well, my name is Gabriel I'm 36 with a 9yo son. I live in the Northern Rivers on the north Coast of NSW. My partner Lou and I have only owned our van for just over 2 years which we bought off a friend because it was hot pink  ::). It's a 1974 LWB, high roof windowless (apart from the custom sidies) chevy powered love muscle. This is my third Bedford and by far my favorite!  ;D I have always been in love with vans and bikes. I always looked for movies with vans in them as a kid and own a few old CV&T mags and the first issue of Vantasy with Mystik Fantasy on the cover.

I'm a Dj (yes I play records and no I don't play requests! lol just lokes!), an Event Production Co-ordinator and a licensed scaffolder and Rigger. Lou is an areobics instructor and is also studying to be a teacher. We didn't make it to this years Van Nats because our new box wasn't ready, but we're on a mission to make it to the next one in Melbourne. We're hoping to get our new gearbox installed in October so we can then get on with finishing the interior.

I also own a 1976 XC GXL Faimont sedan, a 1977 Z650 and hopefully oneday if I'm good (fat chance) I'll also own myself a Shovelnose with extended forks!  8)

Welcome to the board Tony.
To the best of my knowledge, you are the first person in the world to fit front disc brakes to a dual wheel CF.
Could you please put a post up somewhere about how this was done, with a photo  or two.
Lots of people will be interested.

Why is it so strange to fit front disc brakes to a dually?  I'd be guessing but I think mine was a dual rear end the only reson I think this is because of the amount of room in the rear.

Hello there guys.
Don't know if there are any females on this forum, but there is now!  :o
We (my hubby and myself) are the proud owners of a long wheel base Beddy with a high roof with a fibreglass top. My husband is 6ft 4in and he can stand up inside! Everything is bog standard except for the dual battery setup. When I find my photos, I will post some.
I really joined this site to find information cos we are hoping to fix it up with flares and stuff. It seems to be really hard to find info and pictures. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Everyone!!!

I did try and post an introduction when the site first came on line, but I must have done something wrong cause after spending about 20min typing out my intro and then clicking on Preview - I lost the lot, so I had a sulk and gave up. So here goes again I'm over my sulking and I'll try and post my introduction now.

My name is Jill but everyone on the old site knows me as Jilybean! Craig is my better half and as I think we have said in the past (But I'll say again for the new site!) we have 5 kids. 3 boys and 2 girls ages ranging from 17 down to 8. I work full-time and at the moment we are renovating our house.

We have a few Bedfords here at the moment and one of them SWB we are planning to do up as a camper so Craig and I can run away from home. I really like the LWB and I think if we can find one it would be good to do that up as a get away and perhaps even pancake the roof? We also have a 48 Chevy Pick-up in the shed waiting to be started and I would not mind doing my own 34 Ford Coupe. But alas the house must come first at the moment. Not long now though, We've been working hard.

I am a truck driver during the week , ride bikes regular like , and will never grow up... I am the proud owner of a 78 swb which has had  a 10 bolt rear and hj front added as well as a lot of bog. I guess the rust comes standard . I must admit I've owned it since the floods but could never really get attached however since finding this website i've found I AM NOT ALONE and have even got my girly interested. Intro you say.... well then here's mine............ names ben i'm 26 and live in perth, only became a member of the site recently however i must confess i stalked your site (old site and new site) as a guest for quite some time ;). I'm a chef (i don't recomend it the hours are far too antisocial) and as for my bedford addiction it all began in london. I lived there for five years with my now fiance, who despite her denial is almost as much in love with beddies as i ;D. We owned a 1984 cf2 camper for our last year there and lived in her for almost four months as we drove around europe.although she had her problems along the way  ???(radiator, brake pads, exhaust, starter motor etc..etc... i'm sure we've all been there) i can honestly say i've never owned a car   eh  hum  van like her. and i want one. i even considered shipping her back at one point. so now i'm on the hunt for for a beddy and the plan is to spend sum time fixing her up and decking her out for a "van tour" of oz. until we find the one i guess i'll just keep dreaming and searching

a big g'day to all and nice job with the site

Hi all out there,I was starting think I was a dieing breed!  I'm a new member,I found you looking for someone who knows something about 4wd beddys.. Anyway i'm 42 wanted a Beddy from 14,at 17 first car HG panalvan, great car but to small swapped it for dads combi, bigger but motors just can't hack it $$$$. Combi t-bard onto roof and written off, thank you up there. Insurance was enough to get Beddy SWB camper, 20 years later re-newd and converted nearly every part nut and bolt. I've always welded up any rust(and there has been a lot of it) and It's never broken down and left me stranded(only once when treating it like a 4wd as usual, cut fuel line). Everyone says it's time to go modern, so I remind them of how much they spend on fixing a car they can't work on them selves. I'm a bit of a gypsy surfer, snowboarder, live out of Beddy upto six months of year and slept seasons in the snow down to -18 below brrrr. I love my Beddy but want a 4wd, so it looks like I'm gonna have to convert it to 4wd( oh my god what am I in for).  Love this new site and like minded Beddy lovers. So glad to hear your out there. Dan

gday guys well ive been on this and the old site for a while now since having my beddy, its been great reading this thread and about all the different beddy nuts!
so this is the first chance ive had to write an intro,(usually my girlfriend hogs the computer!)
my names luke, im 34, a landscaper by trade but trying to get into carpentry for something different and to learn to build my own house one day ;D. i spent 3 seasons at mt buller snowboarding, then went to canada to continue, then to london and on to france for 5 years! met my lovely german girlfriend over there and she came back and we saved for 6 months in melbs then travelled round oz for a year in our beloved beddy!
i first got into beddies on a holiday to byron years ago, all these surfer mates, were cruisin from ballina to byron to go surfing and i thought it was sooo cool! :D
my first beddy was in london, it was a camper with a fridge, cooker and sink etc. i bought it off a mate for 200 quid who had just been around europe in it. i got as far as luton airport (about 1 hour or so away!) before the diff went and we got stuck just before xmas. bussed it back to london, then went back in the new year and limped it back with crazy crunching noises coming fromn the rear! dont know how i made it back!
it was at this time i got the job in france so the van sat in an alleyway in london for a year before it got towed away, i never even got to see it again!
on coming back to oz i knew i wanted one and bought the first one i saw, well i didnt see it it was in sydney! went up to drive it home but the tranny was gone so put it on a truck to get it back. also the guy didnt tell me about the prang it had had on the drivers side front that wasnt in the photo :'(. spent the 6 months before the trip fixing it up and spending heaps on it to get it ready.
the only dramas i had were overheating in adelaide on a scorcher so got a 3 core radiator, and went through a crazy dust storm out of ayres rock which stuffed my dizzy and wheel bearings. besides that it cruised quite nicely ;D ;D ;D
i love my beddy and doubt i will ever sell it, unless i had the money and found one with no rust! (yeah right!)
its so good to see other beddies on the road and give them the big thumbs up :D
and i think we are definitely in a wicked class of our own which makes it all the more special! whod want to drive a crummydoor?  (sorry to all u commodore drivers, dont get me wrong im a holden freak but love things a bit different...)
my other love is hr's ive had 3 utes and 2 sedans, did up one ute from ground up but sold it to go overseas and im still spewin about it!
im also into dirtbikes ans cant wait till it rains so i can go for a ride :)
im def. going to the van show so hope to meet all those going and have a blast!!!
so as usual, take it easy folks!
westy
oh yeah wicked site! thanks to all those responsible...

Hi All,
My Name is Nathan but all my mates call me Nathro, so feel free. I'm 24, live in sunny Canberra with my girlfriend and work as a Software Analyst for the government (but no, im not a public servant  ;D). Previous to that i was a Weapons Electronic Engineering Officer (trainee) in the Navy. So if there are any pussers around, say hi. Oh, i am also completing a degree by correspondence.

I currently own 4 cars. My daily driver is a purple BA XR6 falcon, i have a 74 LH SL/R 4200 torana as a project, a 74 LJ GTR Torana as a project and my beloved 1980 CFS Bedford which is in the middle stages of being reborn.

I bought my beddy in october 2004 without knowing anything about bedfords (hadnt even heard the name). I saw it in a carpark and immidiately decided i HAD to have have it so i left a note under the window wiper. after no phone call for a couple of weeks i tracked the guy down and called him. By the end of the day i had bought it for $800. It was a 202 auto that ran very rough, but it had almost no rust, the doors all opened/closed well, and it had the front air dam and flared arches. I was a very happy boy.

Anyways, enough about that. I am a soccer (football) nut and will talk about it for hours to anyone willing to listen. Apart from work, uni, soccer and spending time with 'the wife' most of my spare time is spent working on my beddy. All my mates think im nuts because i have been stripping the beddy right back and doing things that they think are pointless (like last month where i sanded and spraypainted the chassis). Personally i want to make my beddy as good as possible and i thoroughly enjoy spending time working on it so i dont see a problem.

My ultimate goal is to win a trophy at some form of car show for my Bedford. That may not seem like such a challenge in itself, but i have limited myself to $10K to build the van which makes it a bit harder.

The van hasnt seen the inside of a mechanics since i bought it (and it never will). I have no formal trade experience but i have learnt what i know from reading and doing it.

Thats about all i can think of (and likely is about all you want to read) so that'll do me.

Cheers, Nathan.

Hi guys. Kevin from Perth, just bought a Beddie 2 ton truck, 202 and auto with duals.
Freshly painted so not sure what the paint hides, but seems quite sound and motors along very well.
Got it off a guy who hadn't had it for long so it may have circulated and be known to some of you Pth owners.
No immediate plans for it, just keep it on the road I guess.

Personal note, upholsterer fast approaching retirement age, most of my work these days is done out of my factory in Indo.
Thinking about restoring and importing Kombi's but thats off topic. Dano do I know you?? (Grace and Dave?)

Be nice to catch up with other owners sometime.
Cheers
Kev

Hi All. Thought I would just quickly introduce myself. Jackie and I arrived in New Zealand earlier this year and have made Auckland our new home. We had to leave our blue CF2 back in the old country. We had restored it ourselves over a five year period and it broke our hearts to see it go. On arriving in NZ we bought a '96 Ford Econovan and spent a month touring the North Island before settling in Auckland. I had resigned myself to the idea of owning some modern metal and never dreamed that we would have the chance to own another Bedford until a few days ago when I spotted a very original looking CF1 on Trademe. We bought the van sight unseen (for better or worse) and I can't wait to get it home. So the Bedford dream lives on.

Welcome to the site Gordon  (and Jackie) :). Yes there are still a few CFs on the roads. They seem to come out in the summer as people use them for holidays.
If you bought that white SWB with the sunroof......looks like a good original van.

Gordon, your old blue van looks very interesting. Is it airbagged? She looks good down low.
If you have photos of it, could you please put some in the gallery? I'm interested to see what can be done with the later shape Beddie.

I do too so I have 2 of them. Rectangular one in the front and a small square one in the back.

If you want to see what you can do with a later shape look at mine!! ;D :P

Hi Jeff

The suspension was conventional with custom made leaf springs at the back and custom made coils at the front. The front and rear shocks were then replaced with units of a suitable length. The work was done by a mate of mine who owned a muffler and tyre place in conjunction with a spring manufacturer who had his workshop right next door. We started with the springs and once we had the ride height perfect it was then a case of matching up the shocks. It took about two weeks to complete with my mate doing the work in between his bread and butter jobs. The front ended up a bit soft for my liking, but the ride was way improved. I will happily put some more pics up on the gallery. I wish I could have brought the van across with us when we immigrated.

Hey,
I'm Wes and just bought a 1980 bedford LWB(I think) van from the guy accross the road. It is a red 202 auto, dual fuel, and carpeted in the back, has been a work van forever but well serviced. It has not been modified from what I can tell apart from elec Ignition and LPG. I'm not too keen on the diff ratio (diff recoed 1 yr ago) for long trips so I will be looking into that, it's running the large Salisbury diff and dual wheels.
It was running rough however so I pulled the head off today and found a burnt valve so I will get a new set re-lap and whack it back together.

I do need new indicator lever as the self cancel is broken and the high beam doesnt work but I think that and a few tyres is all it needs for RWC.
Dad owned one years back and it did well carting motorbikes and kids all over the country side.
Anyone know the best place to try for indicator switch?
I cant wait to put the kids in, the canoes and bikes on the roof and head off into the sunset (slowly at the moment).

Ohh yeah, a lick of paint is in the not too distant future (Dad used to be a smash repairer and we still have a spray booth/pit/ramps/tools etc). I am thinking a 2 tone with white up top and something else on the bottom.
I wouldnt mind getting disks all round too as I will be putting a super charger on at some stage. I have had it in the shed for years waiting until I got something that it would help with power. This van needs some help!

gee you were lucky.. others have to drive to the other side of aus to get their vans!!!!!

welcome to the bedford site!!

indicator stalk.. well original ones are few and far between..

every one that i have has something wrong with it so its best to modify something out of another vehicle.. mini stalks are exactly the same. land drover apparently fits with slight mods..

good luck.

Yeah I was pretty lucky, it has heaps of charactor. Thanks for the welcome Ben.

I pulled the burnt valve out today and picked up a VRS kit. Turns out the head has hardened seats and brass bushed valve guides!! sweet all set up for lpg but the exhaust valve is cactus. I hope to get one next week.
how much do you want for your indicator switch jimsvan? I presume it works properly?

Wes

Salutations,
Well i wanted a trailor. And I thought, if I'm going to buy a trailor its going to have to fit a pool table on it. Imagine my excitment when I saw this baby parked near my olds house with $1000 ono sign on it. $500 later I am the proud owner of this 1977 ex postie Van.
I have driven it to my house, but indicators arn't working at the moment, I won't give the police a chance to give it the dreaded yellow sticker so its staying put till that gets sorted.
Next plan is straight to my mechanics for the once over, then find some backyard metalworker to fill it up with bog.  Next camping trip with the boys next year will be attended by my Beached Azz mobile AND my pool table

Hi, Moose here from new Zealand. The 1981 Bedford in the pic is registered as... Moose. Yes, it's had that plate since 1985 and has also had an old 3 litre ford V6 Zephyr motor, 5 spd toyota box. Runs 295 50 15 rear and 265 50 14 front and handles really well. Been all over NZ.
Came across this site and it looks good and helpful so joined up and willing to share knowledge - and hopefully learn a thing or two as well.  :D

Hi Jeff,

It's Freezing of course up here, snow on the tops and heading for my doorstep. A run to Hanmer, must have been today (Saturday) trust you had a good time. I'm still working out diff stuff and found the replacement diff is a bit narrower, and this is after I order the new wheels. Just as well the wheel manufacturer was able to alter specs.

However, more on that, after looking at some of the bedford diffs I have around here the axles appear to have pushed out and stretched the bearing retaining plates making the face to face measurement wider 10 to 15mm.
Pays to check carefully before making a set of flares not to mention the safety factor!

Hi AmeyC2

Most people one here do there own Mugganics
Mechanics but if your van has a holden six then any reasonable mechanic should be able to tune it - Able is down in Geelong maybe he knows of one.

Tyre rotations are pretty straight forward - just changing tyres around - good practice for when you have a flat tyre :)

Cut and pollish oncre again not hard and a way for you to :see: the van up close, just takes time and a bit of effort.

Welcome aboard Martin,

For my 2 cents worth - i transplanted a V6 into my beddie along with the trans etc and dropping an 8 in would not be so different - but...i took a 186 out to put this in and having my time over again (which i now do having just bought another one) i would have left the 186 and had it worked a touch, this, in the end would have given me ample power without all the hassles that go along with the heart transplant!

My new beddie has a 173 and its staying, 3 speed manual - staying - Drum Brakes all round......staying! the only change will be the diff to give me lower top end revs. When you look at a beddie your looking at a big box of air, you dont need an 8 to pull it around and in this day and age of speed camera's - its not like you can stretch its legs whenever you feel the urge.

So there you have it - mezzmo's Sunday sermon.

Take CFJeff's van on here, Christchurch NZ, full custom, running Holden 6, for may years though the rebuilds, he seems to be happy with it. But then I guess if you are young and are able to do this yourself it's great, but for us older guys who have been there done that the 202 etc sounds good, and with the right gear they go well, the only thing I see people do wrong all the time is the grind on the cam, this can be done in such a way  that you will get as much low down power has a v6 and the diff change will take care of the top end.

i  like a small 8 under me, sounds  8)  bit more grunt "IF"u need it to get outta a tight spot, good towin power, an the speed camera thing is simple as, dont go over the limit, as far as fuel economy goes, the 253 again pee pees over a 202 6!!  to throw a six  :'( back into "ol futile"  would be, i feel, akin to cutting one of my  :o knackers off  :o ;D  ;D  ;D  different strokes for different folks but reckon its like jumpin on a yammy 125, after being used to an 80 cube...  ???  ???  ;)

I already saw that one. Contacted the seller, asked for more pics (wanted to see the other side) and if there was video of it running / driving. And asked about the diff. Only reply I got was "original diff". No extra pics. I would have put a deposit on it already and booked a ticket to Sydney in plans of driving it up to Brisbane if the seller had offered more pics and a video.

Hi guys,

Love this forum (never registered till now) but haven't written in a forum before so mercy, please!

Yep - the time has come to part with my beautiful big fat girl. I'll try to post into the 'For Sale' thread after introducing mahself.

My name's Beau. Now - I know nothing about cars, probably less than nothing actually- sort of like the black hole of knowledge... But I bought my Beddie about 7 years ago when a friend sort of convinced me we could do something with it. A few things were done (I had to get the drive shaft made, some new tyres, etc.) but never enough just to get me a roadworthy (which is all I actually want!). I love love love her but a) don't have a yard at all to work on her or keep her in between mechanic / panelbeater visits, b) just want to buy one with a roadworthy so c) can just start enjoying driving one the same way all you guys get to!! Ahhhh.... the dream of camping in a Bedford by a lake... ahhhhh....

I don't know about you guys like but my big girl is my perfect Bedford - 1976 CF SWB with gate doors to rear and side but she's the sort with not a lot of windows. Whoever the kid was that I bought her off all those years ago gave her a nasty spray can job which makes her look like a big fat angry badger (which I love) but there's no way to replicate that exact paint job (as shi*ty as it is, it makes me smile).

So, as sad as it is, I'm about to become one of those people on Gumtree or Ebay moving my beautiful shitheap to try to find one on here that is equally shit but roadworthy-able. Thought I'd post to you guys first since you always seem to be on the lookout!

Looking forward to trying to do it all again, though. BTW - Does anyone actually know the terms to describe my angry badger given the info above (i.e. No windows, blah blah...) because in a few months I'll be looking for the exact same one (but close to RWC)?

Thanks for the forum! Speak to you soon,

Beau

Hi I'm Jeff from Tasmania, great site and loads of fantastic information.
I have a 1970 series 1 CF SWB van. It sat in my garden for quite some time and but now I have a bit of time to throw at  my intention to get it back on the road.
Having read through some posts I noticed there is a bit of debate about front disc brakes, has there been any conclusion about what goes on, as they would be on my wish list. Te other option is to try and find some Bedford pistons and reuse the original drum brakes. It's not my intention do any trans alpine adventures, or race it round Bathurst, and from what I can remember of the brakes form my time on them in the 70's and 80's there weren't to bad.
From what I've seem on here lowering them is either a case of spending $ ooo, ooo, ooo nds od dollers or just leaving them as they are.

The only other mechanical thing on my list is the final drive ratio, mine seems to be somewhere about 7: 1 as it only does about 60kph with the engine revving it's nuts of.
At the moment my budget for the project is $0, and at the end of it I hope to have most of that left.

 Jeff.....
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: mezzmo on March 29, 2014, 05:17:41 PM
Hi Jeff, welcome aboard. For my 2 cents worth, i have 1 bedford with a disc brake front and another with standard drum brakes - unless you are  planning to do some serious 'giddy up' like throwing a 350 or like in the engine bay, i'd highly recommend leaving the drums as is - my disc brake job has a V6 but the drums pull the 173 straight 6 up in half the time.

Always good to start with a budget of 0.......it never gets better! :D
Title: Re: Introductions
Post by: Tasford on March 29, 2014, 08:11:26 PM
Thanks for that Mezzmo, We used to have a CF as our mobile workshop when I was a diesel apprentice, they would have the best part of a ton of gear in them, most of the time, and the drum brakes used to pull them up without any problem.
I'm only running a 173 in it so they should be fine and it has a servo for a bit of extra suck. The next bit is the big sticking point.
What do you do about the diff ratio, the ones in the UK didn't have that kind of problem, they could get along at 110 to 130 kph all day no problem, but the ratio in my one is very low. Is there an easy fix? I've read about a highway diff on some of the threads, but where do you get one. I was considering changing the whole axle, but I can't find one that's wide enough and if I did they I would have to get re drill the shafts to fit the wheels, which I would like to keep ( period Jelly Been )
Living in Tasmania there really isn't any engineer that is even interested in doing that kind of work. I would do it myself but I don't have access to the gear that I need, and buying t or making it for a one of job isn't worth the investment. I have been told of guys that do re engineering but every time I go to see them they'er either not interested or are asking big bucks for jobs that I know would take on longer then an hour.

 Rock and a hard place...

 Jeff....

Welcome Jeff

For the Brake issue, properly adjusted and well maintained, and not overloaded drums can be as effective (or more so) as discs - rebuild the slave cylinders and get the drums machined and new shoes.

Drums suffer from fade, so if you ride them they heat up then fade - use engine braking (shifting into or staying in a lower gear) in conjunction with periodic apply of brakes should avoid fading.

I have a spare beddy that has drums front and rear and I'm thinking of swapping them out and putting them into my camper - going back to stock.

As for the diff, find out what type it is and then find another gear wheel and pinion of a ratio between 2.87 and 3.5 and just rebuild your existing diff. If is a borg warner diff then gears should be readily available.

Warren

There are lots of options on diffs- check the forum- almost everything has been done at some stage. Mine has a 3.5:1 and feel it still revs too high at highway speeds. if I had a choice, with 14" tyres, I would get something about 3.00:1 , dropping the revs right down @ 100k to around 2300, from 2800 now (with 3.5) or over 3500 with the original 4.54:1.

But I'm sure there are others with different views.

Cheers & good luck

Russell
PS do you have a single or duel wheels?

My intention is to use it as an every day driver, so hauling kids, going shopping,  the usual sort of thing. I'm no longer a hard driver, so the need of stop on a penny brakes just isn't required any more. There are a few hilsl about in southern Tasmania where I live, but they've been here for quite some time so they're no longer much of a surprise. The only weight it'll be hauling is it's self and 3 people, max.
The manual that's in it is on it's last legs and will be getting changes as is the clutch, so I was thinking of and auto as there are a few that are available to me through mates. If I get an auto with an over drive it would be good, but I think it'll be more than  likely  a 1:1 straight through final drive.

I intend to keep the 14 inch wheels as they are period, in good condition and I like them, and was thinking of 60 or 70 series rubber probably 225  235 on the rear if I can get them, it would also fill the wheel arch a bit better than the 50 series.
Ideally if I can get it to cruse at 110 @ 2500 to 2800 rpm I would be very happy, so I was thinking of a diff at about 3:1  or as some one mentioned 2-8 :1.
It's single wheels on the back ( and the front as well )

My wife's 1973 Mini runs a 2-9 :1 on 12 inch wheels and that gets along very well she is doing the best part of 700k's a week all year round, with only a bit of regular maintenance.
