Title: burnt ignition loom again
Post by: skyline_glenn on June 02, 2013, 04:39:12 PM
Hi guys, I have a similer problem as wlazaher. Our van has a burnt out ignition wiring loom, but unlike wlazaher ours is melted all the way to the starter motor. Will get some pics when I can. Can anybody help with a loom. Been checking trademe but alot dont seen to answer, have already bought a full loom but it is definately not the same as ours as the fuse box is the blade type, the plugs are different and the wires are different. The van is a 1976 with the original motor and box.

Cheers

Wow that looks serious Did it start in the switch up at the ignition lock or was it pinched somewhere near the radiator

I might have a complete loom there, or worst would be a couple of plugs cut off, but am not home (in auckland) for a week, am currently down Hamilton - knocked out with the flu :(

Think it started at the ignition. We bought it fo the neighbour like it but I stopped it from burning thr van to the ground when i got a phone call from the neighbours daughter. She had moved the van and went inside, when she came out later it was full of smoke. I managaed to take battery out to cut power and the ignition barrell was so hot the surround was melted along with indicator switch. We sort of guessed it was a faulty ignition that had shorted out maybe.

Hope you get better soon. That would be great if you could check. We are currently looking at buying the blue van in wellington on trademe. If we get it for the right price so we can sell the rest but it is a bit of a hassle just for a loom.

Cheers

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

I am sorry to hear that! oh no. in many ways its similar to mine, it also burnt down to the starter motor. But only the brown wire burnt in mine. I am still yet to fix it. I managed to get hold of a loom here on trademe. There was a guy wanting to sell me his for $80:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=597022843 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=597022843)

But his one is mounted on the dashboard, see the pics on trademe, im not sure if it uses the same wiring loom. Maybe someone here knows. Anyhow flick me a text or call on 021 0378140 and I can give u his mobile number because I was in contact with him. Seems a lot of trouble to buy a van for a loom.

From now on ill make sure to clean the wiring!

Hey Glenn, might be a bit longer until I'm home, they reckon I have pneumonia. I wouldn't recommend to it anyone.

Hi, does anyone know a good Mobil auto electrician, in the Auckland area, trouble starting the van,  Waseem gave me a number of a guy who did his work but as yet no luck on a return call, need this sorted so I can move the van into its new den to work on, want it on the road and finished for the nationals.

Cheers Bas

Is this for the V6 bas? check all the plugs to and around the computer, also check the map sensor plug - it's a small black box with wires and a vacuum hose going to it. also check your fuel pump is working - you should be able to hear it "load up" when you turn ign on. Other problem could be bad earth or plug to the coil packs

Went to start it yesterday and no go, fuel pump would  come on but motor would NOT turn over, pulled a few fuses and but them back in and it started. turned it off them tried again then no pump, ran a new set of wires for the pump and now works so started ok, but needs to go back to the old wiring as this controls the pump off and on sender during start up, started the van all good, went out there this morning, and pump still works but no motor start, it's like when you have the van out of park, and try to start it, pulled out all the fuses and put them back but no go, so will have a look at what you have suggest David, Thanks  ???

I can't remember if you had the original shifter or not, check the micro switch on shifter also

Yes have the original shifter, seems to be all ok, as this was my first thought, don't know how to test this if ok or not, looks like a round unit that takes care of this, but pulling the fuses and replacing seemed to have worked once, didn't touch the shifter at all that I can remember.

"O" well it will have to sit there until a solution comes along.

Cheers.

my van died once and problem was a plug up by the computer, moved the loom and it went, finally tracked it down to a plug, (that time I only had ign lights and nothing else), another time it ran like crap and it was the coil pack plug.
There are lots of little pins in the plugs and a little corrosion can cause big problems, even just unplugging the and spraying some crc/wd40 into them and replugging can help

Ok, thanks David, if it's fine over the weekend will spay all the fuse contacts, and check loom etc, yes have ign lights and everything else.  Bas

Thanks guys, Marty, lets just say the side effects were nasty, antibiotics (3rd lot) did the trick and am over it the pneumonia.

Glenn,  I'm back in Auckland for a bit, you still wanting that loom?
Reason I'm asking is because I have to empty the van out to get to the looms ...

Hi Busy,

If you did have the corrct loom how much would you want for it? My brother has pulled the old one apart and is going to have to replace just about all the wires so is keen to get a complete loom.

Cheers

Will cost you the cost of postage, unless you know someone in Hamilton or Auckland thats coming down your way, and a pay it forward one day :)
It's been a while but if I remember correctly I have at least 2 there, a standard and a modified one for a holden engine (starter etc on other side), I know I've cut a copy of plugs off one of them.

If the rain holds off tomorrow I'll pull them out and let you know

I managed to pull them all out before the rain got me.
I found 3, but all are different, am pretty sure the one I picked out is original CF and the other 2 are for holden and ld28 or something.

PM me your address and I'll get it sent down to you

you might have to wait for that if it's still raining tomorrow, I'm heading down Hamilton again tomorrow afternoon for a couple of weeks (rotorua swap meet is weekend after next).
If I can't get it out (I have 3 doors, 8 sheets of ply and numerous other parts on top of the compartment there are in), you want me to just send the front part or you want to wait ?
