Title: front axle
Post by: KGG86 on May 15, 2013, 01:55:22 PM
Is it common for the front axle to be 20mm further to the drivers side than the passengers side ,because when I measure from the body the the wheel there is 20mm difference on drivers side to the passengers side

from the end of the stub axle, or from the backing plate of the stub axle?
The large stubs I have here are physically longer than the small stub axles I have here.
If you have machined stub axles you could well have one of each..

It certainly isn't normal. Like Restoreid said, measure from the chassis rail. First measure from centre of back wheel to centre of front wheel to confirm the wheelbase is inconsistent from side to side.  If so, find a bolt hole or other reference point on the chassis that is common to both chassis rails. Measure forward to various mounting points. Say, lower control arm pivot point, centre of bottom ball joint and further forward to common points. This should indicate whether anything has be pushed about in either the rails or the suspension arms. You can also do some triangulation measurements if you have no success with the previous method. With these you measure across the vehicle. From a known fixed point to another known point on the other side of the vehicle.

This is what they use to do when straightening cars in the panel shop. Now it is done electronically and is incredible to watch them first get the measurements then start pushing the car about until it is within tolerance. Amazing stuff really.

I wish you good measurements!

Always measure diagonally, from bottom arm bolts to front gearbox mounts, if thats not out, measure from your diff spring bolts to the gearbox mount

All the measurements should be +/- 5mm max
