Title: CF 270?
Post by: Hobbit on March 20, 2013, 07:19:40 PM
PIC 1. The GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) badge explains why there was 8 leaf springs p/side, when I  bought my van. None of the Bedford documentation lists this model. The brochures only show the nearest: CF 250, 2.46 tons (22 cwt.) and LWB CF 280 with a GVW of 2.78 tons (25 cwt.)
Does anyone else know of the CF 270 in a 106" wheelbase van?

PIC 2. My poor guess at the year of manufacture of Theo's van, (Wendy's spotto pics), led me to find out, that the heater controls were moved alongside the instrument binnacle in late '77.

PIC 3. The 'Facelift' model ('80-'84) might not have made it to Aus. but I see a few of our overseas friends have them. The swing-up parcel shelf on these are a nice addition, similar to the dash I once had. It's inspired me to build a new version.
PS, Notice the newer placement of the fuse-box, where the glove compartment once was.

2nd picture is the facelift model (mk1 front with some mk2 bits) - heater controls different, doors (flat on inner by handles) and door cards different, i think these were between 77 and 79
3rd picture is  a very late facelift model - mk2 dash in a mk1 body, the firewall has the mk2 air vent holes where as the earlier facelift model doesn't. I don't think this is a mk2 bedford because it doesn't have he mk2 inner door handles, still has the mk1.
Also notice the later model one has a bigger arm rest, they came in 3 sizes, tiny (steel early mk1), medium (later mk1 and facelift) and big (mk2)

Hi Busy, Sounds like it was a transitional period for the CF. The last photo and this one came from a
(supposedly) 1980 U.K. brochure. Maybe it's moniker should been "Faceoff", seeing as you could
remove the front in around 15 minutes, by undoing 8 bolts.

I'm keen to know whether my CF 270 was a common model, or available in Australia only.

I don't think I have heard of 270 before... It's probably a model only available in Australia...

I'm no expert, but on page 220 (chapter 13 in the supplement) in the haynes hardback manual, it talks about vehicle type and tyre size. Here the CF270 is listed. tiz listed on page 217/8 in the softback version...... Thought I was going mad for a minute..... Hope this helps.

My cf flatdeck i just brought is a 79 facelift model, it has the same dash and parcel tray as the 3rd photo but is a mk1 with rounded front guards.

I remember some old guy trying to tell me about the years of bedfords many moons ago, he was very old so kept loosing track of where we was going but he reckoned there were actually 3 versions and what we know as the mk2 (square front version) is actually the mk3. Some of what he said rang true but have had no proof of the other stuff. I've only listed above what I have seen in person.

I'll try get some photos of all 3 versions today as I have two mk1s (different) and know where there is a mk2 with the front off at the moment

It could be possible that when the facelift model came out in 1980 in the UK, there were still many cf1 body's in Australia and some of the new facelift parts ended up in CF1's...

YES!!!...The Haynes bible does list a CF 270. Thanks Russell, much appreciated.
I'm still confused though. The dimensions, weights and capacities, on page 317, says it was a long wheelbase model. Perhaps the 270 was produced in both the 106" and 126" models.

it may relate to those LWB versions that only had a single rear wheel as opposed to the duel wheel? with load capacity variance
