Well I went to look at this van yesterday and I gave Maria the green light for her to buy it.
It needs work but nothing that our beloved Ben won't be able to handle.
The last owner bought the van from Melbourne so some of you may/may not recognise it?
Home to Maria and home to Melbourne for the little red Beddy!
Welcome another Beddy to the family! After a short stay at Bens place it will be back on the road
and ready to have some good old rollin Bedford times!

-
Congratulations Maria, Good on you Ben, Jock and Marty...nice work
-
a Quetion on the dash can anyone tell me what it is out of?
Is it one of those fibreclass ones like Joel has got in his.
Cheers Paddy
-
Yeah Paddy looks like one of those Custom Cab ones.
-
yeh bedford custom dash people most refer to them as.
ben
-
Hey Benny I'd put my money on XA ford tailights, the're a three lenze light and should be horizontal . Don't look too bad either. Gongrats Maria nice window less beddie I'm soooo gelous
-
Yeah Paddy, just to sound like a broken record. It is a fiberglass 'Custom Cab' dash.
-
have found transport from syd for $450 to melb. woo hoo. i'm happy with that. door pick-up that end. depot this end. will just need to get tyres as soon as it gets here. will be in Laverton. anyone know somewhere close to that for tyres?
-
Why you need tires? You can still drive it with a permit with bad tires. Hey ring steve. I got some good second hand 14s for my van for 35 bucks for 2. About 80 percent tread. 0407175178
-
technically not ben,
"Your vehicle must be safe for use on the road and you must follow the permit conditions."
so if the tires are bald your permit is worthless ( at the discretion of the nasty who stops you), and if it rains etc,
- plus any insurance is also worthless
-
I thought with that ding in the back you'd just trailer it
-
I think i recall reading that the vehicle must be safe in order to get a permit in terms and conditions. I personally would say that bald tires are safe as long as it is dry not wet.
-
Unfortunately I think you'll find that is debaitable Ben. Slicks on a dry road are awesome, but unfortunately public roads are not nescasarelly dry even when the weather is. No matter what type of permit you've got, if the car is deamed unroadworthy, you will go down hard with no coverage at all. Little insurance company clauses, gotta watch them buggers. Had a step fathery type person that was an insurance investigator. His job - find a way to prove why the insurance company doesn't have to pay.
I would've thaought you'd be able to drive it with the ding as long as all the lights worked as the ding itself doesn't pose any danger.
-
You always have to take the 'what if' into consideration.
My missus got hit by a car this week, she was crossing a pedestrian crossing and
the guy didn't see her or the pedestrian crossing - he didn't even brake until he
had hit her. Luckily she was not square on with the car she rolled off the front right
corner of the vehicle.
If she was in the middle of it's path she would probably be dead.
What if it rained or you hit some oil or someone stepped out onto the road and you
couldn't stop? What if you killed someone?
Spend the money - Get the tyres, it needs 3 but you may aswel get 4.
Did you end up asking her about the spare? I saw it in the back of the van but it had a cover on it.
If it is good you will only need to buy 2 tyres for the time being.
Jd
-
I'm with Jock on this one. Tyres are worthy. ;)
-
sorry to hear about ur missus Jock, hope she is ok.
and dito, i recon tyres are the 1 of the most important things on a vehicle.
try stopping quickly or cornering in the rain with bald tyres.
the results will be disaster, believe me been there done that.
insurance will wipe u if ur tyres or brakes or anything is found to be faulty by neglect.
emagine hurting or killing someone because u couldnt stop in time?
i just put 2 new tyres on the front of my SWB, $240 the pair,
best investment.
marty
-
I would have thought that tyres would be the first thing that you would make sure they were safe. The tyres are the only thing that is between you and the road. If they are no good, then god help you!! I had to replace the 2 rear tyres on my SWB at a cost of $800. Yea, they cost a bit, bit I got the tyres that I wanted and now my vehicle is safe. Safety comes first. I would not want to be responsible for the death or injury of another person. Your own safety also comes into it. I don't like to gamble at the best of times, and I will not gamble with mine or anyones life.
-
yup, well i'm gonna get tyres and keep one of the good ones for a spare i think. i need tyres anyway, and since i haven't driven the van before it's a good idea i reckon. no dramas.
the lights still work in the corner with the ding, i think that just the brake light is hidden. will check it out when it arrives at the depot. will have to put that back window in too. any tips for that would be greatly appreciated.
and jock, i'm glad she's okay. really freaks you out that kind of thing.

Glad to hear your wife is all good! She must be a good woman cause she has some good karma! ;)
-
Hey maria ive had to put in 5 windows in to barn doors. First one takes ages. Next one is quicker. Until now i could put in in less than a few mins i recon
-
Just gaffa tape over it.
Leave that one to Ben... :)
-
update: well, got the van from the car lot. not sure if it had a cracked windscreen before it got on the truck or not. anyway, will get a new one. got four new tyres @ $500. yikes. but good ones. drove down to ben's, not %100 on the steering, or the brakes actually, but she was nice to drive all the same. and it's a 202, not a 186. interesting. not switching to petrol, might just be a block as the fuel pump looks okay, and more rust than you can ever see in a photo, of course.
all now in the hands of ben. meanwhile i plan my interior makeover...
-
now that its in the hand of ben here are some before and after pics from today..

Just checked out some windscreen prices and boy is there a difference. O'brien $364, National $245 and Autoglass $195. And I believe Autoglass will come to me which is even nicer. Who are these O'brien people? How can anyone possibly buy a windscreen off them at the prices they charge??
-
G'day
O'brien have shops in a lot of places that the others don't.
The business they loose in competitive areas is made up for in the areas with no competition, like ours.
They will sometimes discount if you show a cheaper price (where available).
Sometimes life is not fair!
-
True enough. Lucky I have plenty of choice :)
-
195 is a fantastic price ay
-
here are some more progress pics.. sorry some turned out fuzzy.. not sure why ay.
maria gets the van regoed on wednesday wahoo!!!!

nice work ben !! bet maria can`t wait
-
it's true, i'm very much looking forward to it, to put it mildly. very mildly. part one will soon be over, i can go on holiday, then return for part two. the painting. i'm thinking a similar colour. maybe a bit lighter. hmm.
-
ben your a inspiration!
maria you must be one happy girl right now!
one question for ben, i see you have done work on those vertical seams/joins. i was wondering while looking at beddy how you approach them? all other cars i have helped out with have never had butted together seams...
is it just a clean up and lay the paint back in there?
-
some bubbles on the back would look great
-
Great work Ben - glad to see the van coming along very nicely, I bet your excited Maria!
Have a nice holiday with it!
Jock
-
hey thanks people for the encouragement.
hey able i have not done anything with that seem ay.. it had been bogged and i just stripped all the bog out cause it was fully cracked..
when i go to do my van i think ill fully weld the seems.. should be sweet!
cheers
ben
-
Yeah, I want the seems welded in my van
-
welded huh....
i have my cousin coming to have a look at my beddy tomorrow. (the one i mentioned will help me on welding) i will run that idea past him!
i seen maria's beddy for sale before she bought it and was thinking with that dint in the bum the fella will have a hard time selling it (thinking it was un fixable)... look at it now!
-
That was before you met the Benddy Doctor! I mean the Beddy Doctor! He puts the lime in the coconut and shakes it all about ;) 8)
-
haha.. able everything is fixable.. it depends on how much time you want to spend fixing it. a beddy is always worth fixing! there are just not enough left. keep as many as you can on the road..
i have a few vans i was going to scrap at home cause they have huge amounts of rust in them. but ive decided when i get time i will bring them back up to a no rust condition just to keep a few more vans out there.. (not mossy, he is destined for the crusher althou it would be fair challenge hey!)
cheers
ben
-
at least keep the picture of mossy.
my first reaction was to laugh with a vision of you chasing a herd of elephants with diarrhea.
-
Hey able if the dent in Marias van scared you off you should see the dent in the van im working on at the moment... hehe
(check out mt Gallery)
its taking some doing but we should have her ready by end of January
-
what did you do? take a day trip in Iraq?
make sure you post pics of that monster being pulled out!
and i was fretting over my side door being pushed in around the door catch about 3 mm :-X
-
Yeah I will start to post some pics during the week.
we are going to cut tho old one out and then use the porta power to straighten up a little.
then its a cut and weld job for the new fron guard
-
I spoke to Brad from Croydon a couple of years back who did a plasma cut on the front panel of a van at the wreckers and rewelded it on his van, came up noice, couldn't tell there had been a repair job
-
hey toolking how much are those porta powers worth man? sounds like its the way to go for stuff like that.
ben
-
Ah Ben
More tools for your she..... um paddock :D
Warren
-
porta powers usually come in 2 sizes 4ton and 10ton and include the attachments you need.
because they are fairly simple you can also fabricate unusual attachments for the rare job.
you will pay about $149 for a decent one and up to about $240 for a ten ton.
theres not much difference between the top brands and generic brands in quality but the price for big brands gets pretty steep
( 10 ton is very handy)
-
yeah Eddy , we will be doing something similar.
though we will use a spot weld drill bit to drill out the old spot welds and remove the crushed outer skin, straighten the inner panels and then plazma cut the new outer skin and weld into place
Oh yeah we got the motor running yesterday and the chev sounds very meaty indeed
-
hi all,
just an update. still in melbourne :(, ben and i changed the head gasket when he was here for the week. had some issues getting it going due to the mystery of the adjustable tappets - unknown to ben at the time and i would never have known. craig came down and helped on saturday, recognising the problem. tried to leave on sunday morning but clunked out. bit of smoke, some oil leaks which were to be expected.
so one of the tappets has come off and a couple of bits have smashed off. have taken photos but can't upload them now. am waiting for craig to come to the rescue. sigh. some of the other tappets seem to be prone to moving a bit too. had to replace a couple of pushrods as well.
ben also took a mould of my custom cab dash, so if any of you are getting one then you'll have a little piece of my van with you. :) sadly mine suffered a little in the process but will be restored to full glory after the holidays. assuming i get to go anywhere. sigh again.
hope my next update is a good one. ho ho ho.
maria
-
craig to the rescue!!!
-
Wishing you good luck with your next Beddy adventure! ;D
-
sorry to hear of your troubles maria!
but i am very glad indeed that you where nice enough to let a mould be taken of your dash!
my standard dash has the structural integrity of a shoe box tied on with a shoe lace and i will have to cross that bridge eventually!
better luck in the future! and could we please have a better (full) pic of the dash when it is convenient for you.
-
Maria,
Take the bad with the good! The van is looking amazing and apart from the head and the cracked windscreen
(must have been a rough trip to Melbourne - because it was not cracked when I inspected the van for you!) you
should be on the road soon - I hope!
Bedfords are a handful, they require constant love (maintenance and $) and if they are not given it - they give you
a hard time. Like 90% of the Bedfords out there - your van must have been a little neglected.
The engine trouble is strange? It had no tappet noise when I heard it run. I started it and left it running for nearly 5 minutes.
It didn't sound rough or rattly (like a loose tappet) it sounded smooth as butter? I am confused? Did you do anything to the head
recently that may have caused this problem?
I hope you sort it out soon. Just wanted to make sure that you know that I did not give you the "bum steer" the van was running on song
when i looked at it for you.
Cheers and Merry Christmas to you all.
Jock
-
it will all be worth it in the end maria, hang in there.
marty
-
hey jock.. may have been something i did:( i changed the head gasket.. didnt know about adjustable tappets.. say no more..
ben
-
Maria,
How about some updated pics of the van in it's latest state?
Would love to see the progress.
Cheers
Jock
-
hi all,
back from adelaide now, via anglesea. lucky there are aeorplanes and friends with cars. not quite the same though as having one's own little home away from home.
jock i know you wouldn't have given me a bum steer. i always anticipated there would be more than met the eye, or ear. the van is older than me and i'm fairly rattly. anyhoo, with some help and guidance from craig The Lady Obama will be on the road soon enough. (Craig, i'll call you this weekend, you too ben)
I'll post the pictures of the busted tappets etc this weekend. most of me is still on holiday somewhere between anglesea and adelaide. saw a nice(!) gold bedford in adelaide, near morphett vale (anyone's?) and a white poptop in a front yard as we sped through geelong, or maybe torquay.
thanks for all the support. as always, it's really nice to hear
-
"The master's apprentice"
Just a wee update to say the van is now running, and quite nicely too. Craig came over on sunday and we (WE) put in a new set of lifters, pushrods and replaced the exploded tappet. I will add a photo of that shortly. Have put one of two of the very bent pushrods in my gallery. So she's purring along very nicely and is quite zippy!
Thanks to Craig for being so kind and generous, teaching me heaps.
-
He's a top man that Craig Hamilton! aka "Hammers Spanners" good to hear about such generosity and "Bedfordship"!
Keep it up.
Jock
-
Good on ya guy's keep the Bedfords on the road ;D
cheers...johnno :D
