Title: Gordon's van
Post by: Gordon on February 13, 2013, 06:12:42 PM
We reached another milestone today. After 275 hours spent on the bodywork the van made its move to the paint shop. Exciting times !

Hey Gordon. Who are you getting to paint it??

Hi Garry

Warren from East Coast Panel and Paint is doing the job for me. I got some crazy quotes from some guys, but Warren gave me a decent quote and he has done some work in the past for me so I know he does a good job. It was already primered so he is just doing the final rub with a scotchy and then putting on the base and clear. I went through tonight to strip everything off the firewall to give him a clear run at it. He is aiming to paint the roof over the weekend if all goes well. Can't wait to see the new colour in the flesh. Pics soon I promise.

Hi Garry

Just re read my post and it should say East City Panel and Paint.

Sounds good. Be great to see it when it's done. I might give him a call. Mines off for media blasting shortly then I'll be looking for a good painter.

Cheers,
Garry.

Spent a good few hours today sanding my firewall, engine bay, dash and interior windscreen surround in preparation for paint.

The roof was painted last weekend. Can't wait till the rest of the paint goes on.

Thanks Mez, its been a tough few weeks with many late nights and working through the last 2 weekends. My fingers are raw from all of the sanding, but its been worth it. I've added a few more pics to my gallery. Plan for the long weekend is to get it back on the road with the standard running gear. Then its onto the next phase which involves moving the 350 Chev motor and running gear across from the red CF2.

Post by: mezzmo on March 27, 2013, 06:00:41 PM
Just checked the other pics, really coming along well. I cant wait to get mine back on the road but she's still a fair way off. The reason i asked about your color was i had found a color on a  brand new Audi and fell in love with it - The owner reluctantly gave up the color and it turns out they had it custom done in Germany - its actually a Bentley color called Citric Green which looked similar to yours. I'm just torn at the moment wether to do completely stock body or go the hack and build the Easy Roller...........decisions decisions!!!!
Title: Re: Gordon's van
Post by: Gordon on March 28, 2013, 06:36:08 PM
Yep, a tough decision to make. I decided to stick with a standard body as they are becoming pretty scarce. Your latest van looks to good to hack, but to each his own. I was initially going to keep the standard Vauxhall slant 4 factory motor and running gear too, but performance is pretty dismal, it guzzles gas like an 8 and there is usually more oil on the garage floor than in the sump.

yeah you're right in what you say Gordon, the originals are getting pretty rare. I used to own a 4cylinder Beddie myself and i know exactly what your talking about - and man do they scream when the revs go up - my current one has a 173 and i reckon with a highway diff she'll do just fine. What are you going to do for seats etc, are you staying completely stock?

Post by: Bas / NZ on March 29, 2013, 12:00:06 PM
I think you will find, when you get to our age the seats are the first thing to go. If I could fit a Lazyboy in there I would. ;D
Title: Re: Gordon's van
Post by: Gordon on March 29, 2013, 03:28:18 PM
Hey Bas, your right a Lazy Boy might be the way to go :) :)

Mez, I managed to pick up a set of mint black leather buckets out of a Ford Focus for $100 a few months back. They are a pretty good match to my original door panels and the dash crash pad.  I will need to build custom bases for them to get the right height. I'll take a picture of them tomorrow.

I spent most of today putting back all of the engine and firewall bits that I removed for the paintwork. Got the van running again just after lunch so that was pretty good. Plan for tomorrow is to fit the front headlights, grill and front bumpers. Will put up some more pics tomorrow.

My goal is to have it back on the road by end of day on Monday so that I can get it WOF'ed on Tuesday morning.

Bas, if your in the area sometime this weekend feel free to drop by.

Hi Gordon, Jackie and of course Zoe, Will be droping Jona off at his sailing lessons tomorrow at the Ponsonby cruising Club, and will need to kill a few hours, so maybe able to drop around for a sneek look, but will once again have the old lady  ;) with us as she wants to see her grandson sail. so would have to be a short look and talk before she starts.  :D Will be in the mid afternoon if that suits.

Cheers Bas

Got quite a bit done today. The headlights, grill and front bumpers are all on with lots of other little bits and pieces. Need to take some pictures in the morning.

Mez I've loaded a picture of the Ford Focus leather seats into my gallery. They are a bit dusty but the leather is flawless. Plan for tomorrow is to install the contents of both front doors (windows, winders, rubbers and door handles. If time permits I'll complete the installation of the dashboard bits and pieces. More pics tomorrow.

Well, after 4 long days in the shed she is back on the road. Took it up the road to pump up the tires. Think I have a leak in the brake booster pipe (at least I'm hoping its a pipe) and may have forgotten to put back the vacuum advance pipe (I wondered where that extra pipe in the box came from  :) :) My bonnet closer also needs some final adjustment but apart from that she is as sweet as a nut. Up early tomorrow to sort out the niggles before I head off to the WOF station.

See you soon.

Hiya All

Just got back from the testing station and I'm chuffed to say that she passed her WOF with flying colours. Just forked out over $300 for another 12 months of REGO ... yikes. Now I just need to get another 6 months WOF on the red CF2 before I strip out her mechanicals.

Our rego (for cars and vans) is a set rate, is cheaper if wagon is over 40 years old, doesn't matter what size engine you have.
motorbikes are dearer to register than a car, bikes have 2 rates, up to 600cc and 601 and over

Hiya All, thought it was about time that I posted an update on my progress. Well its been about 6 or 7 weekends of work on the underside of the van. Used a pressure cleaner to get about 40 years worth of road grime off. Most of the old under seal was pretty loose so I ended up spending two weekends stripping it off with a hand scraper. Then on went a coat of epoxy primer followed by three coats of under seal and a top coat of acrylic jet black. Today I stripped back the tank and gave it a coat of epoxy primer. Should be able to complete the tank this weekend then the assembly work can commence.

Thanks for the offer Garry. My first deadline is to have the van back on the road by end November so we can do the Orewa cruise night on 6th December and the Salvation Army Car show at St Heliers on 9th December, so plenty of time still to go. Interior can come after that if need be as long as its completed in time for the Nationals.

Nah, nothing as flash Busy. Standard old school 249 HP GM Goodwrench long block. Will fit all new ancillaries including new carbie and Hei distributor. The motor out of the donor van was already 40 thou oversize and using oil so I figured better to start from a good base than throw money at something with a limited lifespan. Did some investigation on the cost of engineering work and assembly and when you factor in your cost of parts its starting to get close to the point where it makes more sense to replace than rebuild.

Hi fellow BUGAs, I'm in need of some assistance. The round rubber seal that fits between the standard Bedford brake master cylinder and booster has gone missing somewhere along the line. Sterlings can match it for me if I can provide them with the dimensions of the seal. Does anyone out there have one handy that they can measure and take a photo of for me. Was hoping to pull the one off my CF2 donor van, but it doesn't have a standard setup so that won't help. Thanks in advance. Cheers Gordon

But looking good.

Nothing major Bas, just new front and rear seals, shift link seal and new o rings on the speedo drive and filler tube. As you say it was changing sweet in the donor van and has a pretty neat shift kit fitted.I drained the fluid and it was still cherry red, so I decided not to open it up. Gave it a lick of engine enamel just so that it looks the business.

Another milestone today. The engine and gearbox are in the hole and more or less in position. I've got it hanging from a chain inside the cab, so that I can test fit the front beam complete with the new power steering rack before working out the new engine mounts. The engine may need to go up a bit or if all else fails further back in order the clear the Transit power steering rack. I'm hoping to pickup the beam from the engineering shop tomorrow afternoon. Tony is busy machining the rack end spacers for me.

Van undertook another trip on a transporter earlier today. This time its off to have the new seat bases, engine cover and a new gearbox cross member fabricated. Figured it was easier to do at my mate's workshop. Hopefully she will return home under her own steam. She is still on standard suspension whilst I source new top hats and brake discs for my dropped stubbies.

Well its been a  few weeks since I posted my last update. Managed to start up the new crate engine on Wednesday 15th December and drove the van home from my mate's workshop on Saturday 18th. What a smooth ride and an early Christmas present. Work closed up on 20th so it has been full on Bedford since then. Even spent Christmas Day sorting out a few bits and pieces. Earlier this week work started on the interior.

Have attached a few pictures of the aluminium framework that I am building to support the interior panels. Using some leftover bits and pieces from our house build a few years back. The plan is to fix everything with old school metal panel clips so that all of the fixings will be hidden. If all goes well I'm hoping to start recovering my panels early next week.
My New Year's resolution is to post more regular updates on my progress.

Got the van back from its final tune up today. Getting 197HP on the back wheels according to the dyno which puts it spot on factory spec for the crate engine. Drove it home and its running like a dream. Tomorrow its off for a slight modification to the tail pipe bend which is rubbing on the back axle. Long term plan is to replace the entire exhaust system, but that will happen only after cert.

Garry, they were listed on TradeMe by Magwheel Warehouse down Manukau way. I bought 2 NOS caps a while back from a chap down south for $30 for the two. Never thought I would get a chance to get a matching pair, but then they came up on TM about a week back. $36 each, but still worth it to get the genuine article I thought.

Thats pretty cool. I've made up some custom caps for mine out of alloy but haven't fitted them yet. Will do it once the paint etc is done, whenever that is.

Ta for that Marty, yep I'm pretty chuffed with how she has turned out. There is always something more to do, so they are never quite finished. That's half the attraction I guess.

Started pulling out my standard suspension arms on Sunday to fit my modified arms and dropped stub axles and discovered that my brake master cylinder has a slow leak. Stuffed the paintwork on my booster. Bugger !

Took my master cylinder along to Sterling's to see if they had a set of new seals for me. The bad news is that the bore is worn so the cylinder needs a resleeve.

I cheered myself up by fitting my dropped stub axles and adjustable upper arms tonight. I couldn't get a decent pic as my shed is a bit narrow, but the pics below should give you an idea of the outcome if you compare the shed's ceiling line from rear to front. The other good news is that the dropped axles have narrowed the front track enough to fit 8 inch wide rims under the standard front guards .... bonus !

Good work, Gordon.
I like the idea of sieving the master cylinder (and wheel/clutch cylinders) as you do it once and then only ever have to fit a kit.
(for those that don't know- it's a stainless steel cylinder they put in, so NEVER RUSTS  ;D)
I replaced all the master/wheel cylinder rubbers in my 300E van and only took a few hours and cost me under $50.
For a long term purchase, definitely worth it.
cheers
Russell

Thanks for the offers Busy and Baz, but I've already given Sterling's the go ahead to re-sleeve the cylinder in stainless steel. As Russell says it's well worth doing.

Hey Bas, that van really suits you  :) :)

Thanks for dropping by today, you always inspire me to keep going. Just got the brakes to bleed and then she is back on the road. I'm hoping to sneak a few hours off work on Tuesday to get my wheel alignment adjusted.

looks great Gordon, love the mags too, are they us indy's ? they seem to have a deep dish look

Thanks for the feedback Wendy and Gunning.

Gunning, the mags are 8 inch wide Cheviots dating from the late '70s. I previously had 7 inch wide ones on the front, but the Stubtech dropped stub axles narrow the front track to the point where I can just squeeze an 8 inch wide rim under the standard front guards. I'm now running Ford stud pattern all around which makes things easier. I love the look of the deeper dish on the 8Js.

Beaut photo's Gordon, what have you done to the roof? the wells have been smoothed.... big job...did you get this done? I'm going to do the same for a sunroof but just use a large new sheet and taper the "tabs" to weld in and fill the wells...Awesome!

Must just be a trick of the light in my shed Dano as the roof wells are standard. Makes sealing the sunroof a bit tricky, but I don't have any leaks .. touch wood.

We took the van out for a bit of a run today and managed to get a few pics that show the difference in the suspension height. The back is still at standard Bedford ride height. I plan to get the back springs reset to drop the bum a bit. Still want to leave it with a bit of a rake in typical '70's style.

Thanks for the feedback Busy and Hobbit. The adjustable upper arms have made quite an improvement to ride quality under highway conditions, but you can notice a bit of feedback from the rose joints on a bumpy road surface. A small price to pay for the improved looks.

So, over the weekend there I was reversing out of my driveway and the next minute my neighbor's tree jumped out of the bushes and beat my Bedford's bum black and blue.

Do you get mad tree disease ?

Yep Bas, I was pretty philosophical about the whole thing too. At least its forced me to get my other small assembly related mishaps sorted at the same time as well as sorting out the stone chips from our epic South Island trip.

I visited the patient earlier today and its already looking a lot better. Got my valance straightened too.

So those of you in NZ who watched the first episode of Westside last Sunday night would have spotted a familiar looking Bedford van being used as a robbery getaway vehicle. Now that the episode has aired I can share a few pics that I took during the shoot setup.

Thanks Wendy, it was a great experience and makes you appreciate how much patience the filming crew have. I was there for 5 and a half hours and they ended up with about 30 seconds of footage.
