Hi All.
My main setback in getting my van on the road at the moment is `` no brakes `` .
I,ve got the master cyl apart as far as I could but have hit a wall :-[ .
What is stopping the piston from coming out? There doesn,t seem to be any pins etc holding it in .
Does it come out with the plastic thingy in there? I,ve removed the circlip but nothing is moving ???
I,m thinking maybe easier to swap it for a HQ master cylinder . I,ve read up some of the posts regarding this and seems like the way to go.
I,ve noticed that the mounting bolts on the Bedford are vertical where-as the HQ ,s is horizontal . Does this mean I have to swap boosters as well?
Is there a bit of a writeup on how to go about the swap somewhere?
Any assist, much appreciated.
Cheers, Bob.

theres an anchor pin under the fluid resevior unbolt the resevior and inside one of the ports is a pin or bolt just pull that out and the pistons will come out Cheers Merlin

Hi Bob,
The primary piston & spring should come out after the circlip was removed. It's probably corroded in.
Once the fluid reservoir has been removed, pressure is applied to the end of the secondary piston, to
remove the stop pin. It might be better to replace the complete master cylinder if it's too corroded.

Will something like this fit?

Will it matter if it,s used on drum brakes only?
I think my cylinder is beyond repair so I,m grasping at straws here :-[ .
Would anyone have a good ( or repairable ) original for sale??
Cheers , Bob.

G'day again Bob,
That Commodore master cylinder and booster is for disc brakes, a different setup than for drums.
A popular conversion for drum brakes, is an XB Falcon master cylinder on a LJ Torana booster. Easy
to fit. I'm using a reconditioned XB master and booster on mine. Works fine.
-
What did Shane use, as he said it was a straight bolt up. I have disc's on front and drums rear and all works fine, but it is a good idea to use something that is easy to get your hands on if need be.

I have a good standard booster and master if you want to pm an offer.
-
Thanks Shane. Definately interested.
I,ve no Idea what to offer though .. Would you be willing to sell just the cylinder ? Most probably be cheaper to post without the booster.
No big deal if not , I will take both if need be. Could you email me a price ( including postage to SA area code 5540 ) to boshco@bigpond.com .
I have a friend at Mount Gravatt who could possibly collect it for me but not sure if he drives anymore .
Cheers , Bob.
ps.... I,ve no idea what pm means or how to go about pming someone . Am a very basic PCer :) .

I'm using a reconditioned XB master and booster on mine.
Think I'm getting XB confused with XA. Feeling silly, but I'm not real cluey about Fords. :-[

Have just about got my master cylinder drama sorted out but my replacement cyl has a sloping reservoir and my original has a round one .
Is the booster the same for both types of cylinders or do I need a matching one?
I need to rotate the booster 90* for the sloping cyl to fit my booster but how about the pushrod length, etc ? is that a prob?
Cheers , Bob.

i think there are a few posts in the arkives regarding this, do a search or maybe someone could bump the info up to the top?
-
Have you checked weather the bonnet will close with that reservoir just saying
-
It's sweet Reid, Bob's got my old Bedford master cylinder, no probs for fit. I'd say the later ones must
have had a horizontal mounting (flange) and the earlier ones were vertical.
As Bob said, rotating the booster is the only solution.
-
you definatley want the sloping master as opposed to the round one, reason is the pistons in the round one are linked by a crappy wire that often breaks, resulting in a trip to the resleever. These were only used on beddys for a couple of years, and also were used on triumph cars. Boosters were the same just rotated so far as I'm aware.
Cheers Jeff

jeff .... what year or years had the round master with only one outlet ?
-
The round with only one outlet were the early ones, 70,to 72/73 I think. Round dual outlet ran from 75 to somewhere in 77, from there on were the lockheed triangle ones. These are the ones you want according to the resleeve guys I use here in christchurch.
