Title: Engine Compartment Temperature
Post by: Tweaker on October 21, 2008, 12:21:26 PM
Any one know or can hazard a guess as to what temperatures you could expect to get around your extractors and engine in one of our beloved vehicles? ??? Thinkin primarily 350 chev here!

Hay Tweaker, If you put exhaust wrap around the headers that will reduce the heat tranfer from the engine to the cab.

I used to use it on my stockcar and it works a treat.

yep, Warren you got it in one, my extractors are 30mm from the floor and yep in summer it's pretty damn warm to say the least.........am certainly investing in some heat wrap.......thought about ceramic coating too.

mind you I didn't have any floor coverings, so a bit of insulation and some nice fluffy stuff should just about do it ;)

can you NZ boyz tell us what to expect to pay for the dynamat??  pls..

Yeah Ben, I thought about that after putting up my post. I'm thinking of getting one of those things you stick in a chicken's butt when you roast it or that you put in yer milk when making coffee, but to do this the van needs to be running and at the moment it ain't :'(

My point for asking is I'm in the process of re-running all my wires and while I'm at it I'm attemting to hide the little buggers as well and I've been looking at various wires on the net and they say what temperatures they can handle. I am awhere that it gets hot as I can't drive with bare feet cause I'll burn em on the floor.

The main wires I'm having trouble finding a home for are the ones coming from the back of the motor and the stater motor leads. :-\

Hey Paddy have you ever used or heard of anybody using that wrap on the stater motor lead?

Has anybody else hidden their leads? I would love some ideas and or pictures. I did this many years ago to my panelvan, but I did it during a ground up rebuild so it was a lot easier.

Have seen it used on starter motors in some steet rods when costom headers have been fitted and it seems to work.

and i havent heard of any starter motor over heating issues.

Howdy,

The Dynmat costs approx in NZ $390 for the Bulk Kit which contains Nine 18" x 32" pieces of Dynamat Xtreme... You can buy it in smaller sized kits, i.e. door kits, trunk kits etc.
From memory I used 2 x Bulk kits & about 4 trunk kits, which are 5 pieces in each. Worked out slightly cheaper.

hey Joel
I know that you've got your starting battery in the front, but is there anychance you could post a pick of your starter motor wired up for me? The rest of your van looks awesome so I suspect it will here also. I've been banging my head against the floor of the van trying to find a new route that I'm happy with.

Not getting sick of it yet Fellas... Though I wanna be able to drive the bloody thing... Getting there though. Dash/IGN Wiring is about 60-70% complete...!

Tweaker, I can do that. I'll have a look though my progress photos so far to see if there's anything that show the starter motor & the cable leading to it. I basicaly have the thicker cable going through a hole up the front, down on the lip of the front subframe itself, using P clips riveted on.
I'll take a photo if I can't find one.

I have added some photo's to my gallery for you Tweaker.... Last 6 photos. Some of them aren't great, but you should get the idea of what I did.
Shows the route of the main pos+ cable along the lower lip of the subframe. The earth cable is one of the last few shots, 86, shows where that goes. I also have another earth cable from the back of the trans to the drive shaft loop/body underneath...
