Hi All.
While I was crawling around under my Bedmobile ( checking out the clutch ) I noticed the engine sump is hard up against the crossmember :o .
The engine mounts don,t look too bad but should there be some sort of spacer or something under them to give the engine some clearance?
I,ve got a 186 motor in the `ol girl .
Have other peoples had this Prob???

Is it the side of the sump hitting or the sump hitting on back of cross member?
if it's the first i'd say broken engine mount (jack your engine up to see if it parts (just jack a little)
if it's hitting the back of the beam check your gearbox/trans mount, laying on your back you should be able to lift the tail shaft of the box up, or use the jack again to gently jack to see if it will seperate

Check the rubbers in the structs that go from the chassis to the xmember If they are shot the xmember moves back & hits the sump

maybe it has the wrong sump pan????

Had another look at my mounts and they seem ok .
I noticed that the engine mounts are attached to the front side of the mounting bracket on the motor . If I swap them to the back side of bracket it will give me a little room . However , the gearbox mount is as far back as it can go in the elongated holes in the crossmember .
This little project is getting to be a real can`o`worms :-\

The wrong sump is on there, need a torana one double step from the front

What a bummer!!!!!
I dont really want to take the engine out just yet.
I need to build a shed around the beast first.
Would the different sump alter the quantity of oil needed?

My sump hit also I replaced the engine mounts & gearbox mount Didnt help So I replaised the rubbers on the 2 side struts & adjusted them out & got plenty off clearance You will finde that wen you hit the brakes the xmember moves back & hits the sump Im sure that the sump is standard Just check thoes 2 rods Ill bet there loose Cheers Reid

Postie Bob you have the wrong sump. it just fits but if your taking it through a roadworrthy the roadworthy man probably wont like the clearance and make you change to the eh/lj sump. which are pretty rare but are standard for bedfords.. you dont have to pull the engine out to change the sump but you will need to jack engine up and cut the sump out because the clearance to too fine to get it out without cutting it. then put the correct sump in and you'll be sweet. (ive had this problem before)

i forgot to say you'll also need to change the pickup.. so make sure you get one with the sump..

Gidday I also had this problem with my sump on my 186. Mine was resting on the steering rack, so to get more clearance I loosened the engine mount bolts to the block, jacked up the motor and tightened them. This gave me a few mils clearance, so i next said bugger it and proceeded to indnet the bottom of the sump a bit with a block of wood and hammer. Now have about 7 or 8 mils clearance above the rack.
