Title: What size brake booster?
Post by: ShaneJ on November 08, 2012, 10:17:48 PM
Hi Guys

I'm in the process of changing the brakes on my van and at the same time I will be upgrading the master cylinder.

To make upgrading the master cylinder easier, I plan to also change the booster.  The Ford XA/XB master should work well for the brakes I am using.

During my research I have found a booster that will bolt to the Bedford firewall and except the falcon booster with no mods/filing etc at all. My only concern though is the booster I have found is pretty small. Its 180mm dia.

Anyone have a clue about booster sizes and their effectiveness? The particular booster I have found is available in single and dual diaphram in the same dia.

It doesn't really matter what size you use - example; think of HQ holden (big booster) now think of titan/dyna etc truck (small under dash booster)
even compare things like escort and hq or torana and hq

The booster is a vacumm, it can only vac so much whether duel or single and the valve (pvc vavle) stops bleed back. The more important thing is master cly type/size; ideally you need to have big enough size to feed the wheel clyinders and of proper type disc/drum or disc/disc although you can use drum/drum master if you are running disc/drum setup (ie bedford booster and master with hq discs on front) with or without a proportioning valve.

Probably a better example would be hot rods, a lot of hot rods place the booster under the floor to keep a clean engine bay, they use a small truck type booster (the titan/dyna etc style) and as we know these rods can be from 100 to 1000+ horsepower running alsorts of suspension and brakes

Thats good to know. I'll try this one out and see how it goes. I'm just happy it bolts in with no mods.

Once I know it works I'll be sure to share. I have a few of these boosters here to sell if they work. Much cheaper than LJ booster to.

L300 is a nother popular one for customs, it goes under the dash leaving that smooth look under the bonnet ::)

i like the idea of the l300 under the dash .. but wasnt sure of the size as they look small
the new shape hiace has a small setup in tghe front bonnet area .. less room than a bedford

a mate used the L300 on a fc holden, running a tuff 327, with 4 wheel disc's. He pulls up great. He also uses a vacum cannister, but thats due to the size of the cam in it
