Title: Axle lengths
Post by: JohnnyJ on November 02, 2012, 11:56:21 PM
Hello,
I am trying to find out if both passenger & drivers side axles in my differential are the same           length & interchangeable.
I have a 1976 SWB van with a very heavy differential & the axles have 21 tooth spline.
I have seen pictures of the differential on the forum & I think "Ben" has a picture of the axle.
      The ratio is 4.45:1.
Also, what is the ratio of a highway diff, or is it variable?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Most diffs have different lenghts about 100mm that is to have the driveshaft in the centre of the vehicle That 4.45:1 sounds like it might be a highway diff not sure I thought most beddie diffs were in the 5s I think a good diff ratio would be about 3.08 :1 That's what I run & it's great for highway crusing Most Holden & Ford run 3.08 diffs so are easy to get Where are you at because I have a 76 diff that I took out of mine that you are welcome too if you can pick it up cheers Reid

Thanks for the offer & the info Resteroid, but you too far away for me to pickup.
I am trying to have a pair of axles made new, as over the years I have broken several axles & replaced several expensive rear bearings, & I can only replace them with axles 30 odd years old,so I thought new axles would alleviate the problem, but I am having trouble getting the passenger side axle out to measure the length. Has anyone got a passenger side axle (21 tooth spline, 35mm bearing journal, 6 hole backing plate) laying around they could measure for me?
I considered putting a different diff in but it appears to me that it is very labour intensive & I am not too mechanically minded, unless there is one that is relatively "easy" to fit.

Hi,
Ben was unable to get the measurements (thanks anyway Ben). Does anybody else know how long the passenger side axle is?

I take it, it is off the 10' drum ( to have the 6 hole), have 2 sitting in the back of the van, don't know what is the left and right, but can measure both and post in the morning. :)

Thanks Vandee, the length of both sides would be great.

OK, they are both the same length, just fitted them back in the diff and I am able to change sides around, in the old days, we used to carry only one spare and even remember changing them once, will post lengths if required.

Are they 825mm from the back of the hub?
Thank you for your trouble.

I get 834, that is from the (Hub)? part that the suds fit into, photos attached. This is for the 10" drum, 21 spine axle.

is the distance from the end of the splines to the top of the axle different on the pass side eg longer than the drivers side , just something i seem to remember maybe commenting on  when mouse n i tackled my diff in melb.... could be irrelevant  ??? ( or thinking bout it now, could be cos it chewed the end of the splines out when the axle slid out the bearing n diff round that roundabout in eltham  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;) )

No, they are identical no matter where you messure from, bearing / collar etc. Have just put the diff back together and swaped axles around, as I had marked them when I took them out, all fits and works well diff back in mates van today, no problems. Other diffes / 12 bolt etc have different size axles as the diff housing sits off centered if I remember right, but Bedford diff's are centered, this is the easy way to tell if they run different size axles.
