Title: Windscreen Rubbers..
Post by: Marky on June 21, 2012, 04:39:18 PM
I have just pulled out my broken windscreen...to replace the rubber and screen..

Old rubber has channel for receiver for bearing edge of metal frame...and  water channels..on frame edge..

New Rubber has only 1 channel for frame no water channels and other side has one for glass....

which is the best window rubber to use.? ???

ok thanks Dano....

seems the old original bedford rubbers...allow water ...that makes its way..to the edge . a lil channel for the water to run down

Bad design by default as this allows water to sit in the window frame = Rust...

I was thinking that the new rubber ...which by design ... has no allowance for water anywhere..and Butyl Mastic would be enuff..to seal it...up....

O h yeah! gotta love a fixed non leaking Van! ;D

well its done! yippee..new windscreen fitted today...cost $8 for some Butyl mastic...n a 6 pack of Beer!

we fed a length of internet cable into the inner bead....offered it up to the van...and then pulled the cable out and massaged the Butyl and the windscreen into place..

Glad I know how to do it..it took 2 of us...about 20mins ..Yay!! no more leaks!!..Now off for a rego roadworthy inspection.asap 8) 8) 8)

well done Marky, yep nothing like a sealing beddie w/screen.... hate that annoying drip right on top of your foot!!!!
not sure if everyone knows that sylastic or sylicon is acidic = more rust , sooo if your sealing a w/screen or rubbers etc use Butyl Mastic ...

 is that any good?

There's 2 types. Acidic cure and neutral cure. If you have to use silicon or a silicon based product on your vehicle then use the neutral cure. Acidic cure is normally used for joining things like sheets of glass together.

I try and avoid silicon and use a urethane sealer.

Never Sikaflex!!

Butyl Mastic..is what my mentors recommended..doesnt go off (hard)

and makes a sweet seal..just clean it up w Kerosene...

Yay Dano  no more drips!..rust prevention gotta be better than the cure.... 8)

Never use urethane on rubbers or you will never get it off. If you ever want to remove or replace the screen you will have to cut it out, ie destroy the rubber

George, don't confuse new and old installations, the new cars use urethane, the older (rubber) type use sealer.
Places like repco etc stock it (I think), the product to use is called "windscreen sealer", cleans up as mentioned with kero, petrol, prepso etc (makes a big mess if your not careful, but is also great to seal tail lights etc

the way to tell the silicones is to smell them, if they have a strong smell they are no good, they are acidic and actually attract water

Yeah sorry, my comment was for general use which I probably should have stated seeing as this is a topic about 'windscreen rubbers'.  :-[

ive never liked that black mastic stuff.
on a really hot day ive seen it melt and windscreens go lopsided.(admittedly not on a bedford) (but a wolseley 24/80)
n the stuff seems to ozze out in spots on a high 30,s low 40,s summers day. forever cleaning the crap off paintwork. and chammies, and hands, etc  .
give me a small bead of black sikaflex any day.
lets face it when the windscreens in why would u wanna take it out?
unless its broken or the vehicle needs a rust repair.
thats just my opinion anyway, not sayin its the right way.
ive got a few brand new windscreens and windscreen rubbers put away in case i ever need them in the future as well.

I would maybe carry a tube in the emergency kit. But i guess the best defence against leaks has to be a properly fitted windscreen and regular maintenance.
