G'day
I have posted this before but Ben was impressed with it and asked me to post it (again)
The trolley really made the motor swap happen.

Now that is flash! puts mine to shame, but then mine are over 25 years old and made out of what I had to hand.

Hi guys, Iv'e never pulled the engine on a bedford before but do you have to drop the cross member or can it come out with the grill removed. I don't really want to drop the front end because I want it to still roll so I can get it onto a trailer to take to the media blaster.
-
i recon its easier to drop the front crossmember pull the motor off then wheel it back under:)
people say they can get it out through the bonnet but personally i wouldnt like to try doing that. sounds like a nightmare even had one bloke recon he pulled a 253 v8 out thrught the grill/bonnet??? pretty keen i recon

Got my motor out & new one in through the front [see camper update posts ] by myself all you have to do is take the head off too easy

ive done it too all i took off was the rocker cover easy peasy

i think im gunna have to give that a shot. did you remove the bonnet and grill?
-
Removed bonnet grill rad support Had to remove the bonnet so I could get the chain as close to the center of the motor as possable & put some weight on the other end of the 3x2 to counter balance it

after many many hours trying to make this old 253 of mine run, i am running out of options..
it is missing on 2 cylinders i think, so i have replaced the sparkplugs and correctly gapped them, tripple checked the timing, new dizzy cap, new leads, new coil. still missing on some cylinders.
checked the electronic ignition module and noticed that there was a chip out of one of the 8 segments (magnets i assume) so i am replacing the dizzy completely.
last thing to check is the carburettor.. is running a stangas rebuild 350 holley with 58 jets and 6.5 power valve.. all set up as per instructions. But no matter what i do to the adjustments, cannot get away from this deadly backfire, unless i drop the fuel flow so low that it struggles badly when on the open road.
The damn thing keeps popping or backfiring in the throat of the carb... it is leaving rings of black carbon on the driveway when i start it, so very very rich, hence me blaming the carb..
anyway... my worst case is i have a popped a head gasket... hence the discussion here... if it is, the motor is coming out.. as i doubt very much you will get the head off while it is under the van.
or am i wrong, and there is a way of lifting the shell high enought to get the head off?? any assistance, otherwise i am building a frame like you guys have shown and ripping the bloody thing out... which means full rebuild.
-
hey stangas i'll bet my left knacker its either a burnt inlet valve or a lobe's gone on the cam ,hence the backfiring through the carb very comon fault with ole 2 flies an aflea do a comp test and it will tell you also check for rocker free play at tdc (shouldn't be any as they are hydraulic lash adjusted Cheers Merlin

i think you could be right merlin..
i have had another look and i can get the heads off... will be a mission but do-able without taking the engine out.
i think it will come off next weekend...
cheers mate

Just remove the engine cover, heaps of room to remove the head then
