Hey guys, got a question out of the blue for ya. I've got a 74 CF SWB running a red 202 with an aussie 4 speed through a custom diff. The diff is high ratio making 1st on the 4 speed quite long. Not a hassle for me (it's been like that for years) but recently when I lent it too a mate he promptly melted my clutch trying to get her up a hill. So now I've got a reason to do what I've been planning for years, a change over to a supra 5 speed (the W59 in order to shorten 1st as much as possible). I've been in touch with Jeff @ Dellows and arranged a supra gearbox and change over kit, very handy. Now all I need is a mechanic I can trust to do the change over for me, I have no garage and wouldn't trust myself to do anything to a gearbox. I live in Thornbury, near Northcote in Melbourne and I'm hoping one of you gents (or ladies) could recommend a trusty mechanic with the time and inclination for this kind of work as close as possible to me. The clutch is about 15% so i can limp her to a workshop when the traffic is quiet but the closer the better I think. Any ideas? Cheers and look forward to hearing from you.

with such a high speed diff are you ever going to get into 5th gear? yeh your right about 1st in the 4 speeds being high.. i just recently swapped my 4peed for a trimatic for the lower ratio in first.. heaps better.. well worth the work.. ben

haha, i was just going to recomend ben the bedford doctor. :)
he beat me to it, he,s your man.

Hey Morgz
What type od 4 speed are you running? there are two types a M20 & M21 and from memory the M21 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) has a taller first gear.
I run a M20 (I think ::)) and a 3.08 ratio diff and dont have problems.
Anyway how soon do you need it done, do you have under cover parking or a cement working area?
I ask because the change over is relatively straight forward, and maybe a working Bee could be arranged to do the work, then you get to learn how to do it, and can blame some one else if it stuffs up :D
I'm willing to help out, and I nominate ben to help as well ;D
Craig could do the photographyl.
And of course Eddy could do the catering.
Ohh I might be in the poo for those comments

Hey there guys, thanks for the quick response from all. Looking forward to meeting up with Ben and Craig (and Warren if you're there) and getting it all done. I've been sniffing around the BUGA forums for years but never got around to joining up *slaps own forehead*. Will do my best to keep in the spirit of things and contribute to the community here, it's a good thing to have. Cheers.

Do you know what type of box you have (M20 or M21) and what have you decided, Just rebuild the clutch or throw in a new box?
There are other types of boxes that can be used have a look here (http://www.buga.bedfordcf.com/funk/forums.php?id=10) for mor info on boxes gear linkages etc
What way you go determines how long it will take and how much it will cost you.

hey warren he had already decided to go supra 5speed when i spoke to him yesterday.. because of the lower 1st and overdrive as well.. he is running a 3.5 diff.. so that should be good addition to his beddy.. ben
-
Thanks Ben
So the gearbox mount (crossmember) and shifting linkage will need to be considered as a part of the change over then.
I think Blackbeddy has mentioned the Magna cable set up.
I'm not a big fan of the gearshift poking through the floor 2 feet behind you sort of thing.

hey Morgz, welcome to the sitebuddy, love the comment 'bout slappin round the head (got the image :D)
Iv'e had several different combo's with the supra, you might find the first to be too low at first, depends on what what diff ratio you running???what rims and tyre profiles???
They are a bloody good box, nice smooth gear changes and not too weak either. The shifters a bit of a drag tho, get one of the boys to weld an extension onto your shifter, it will make the world of diiference, when I get to it (very soon) I' m making a remote shifter for mine, I'll keep all patterns and templates, with measurements for any who need them. If it freaks you out don't fret, just an excuse to change to 15" rims ;D.
I'll keep ya's posted!!

Hi Warren and Dano, thanks for the info. I've been talking to Jeff @ Dellows about the conversion. He tells me he's done exactly the same conversion in the past to his old Beddy and has built me the kit accordingly. I have a custom diff at the moment, 3.5 if I remember correctly (not sure what type of 4 speed box I'm running) and 1st gear is veeery long. Like I said before I've become used to it and drive it accordingly but when friends and family want to borrow it to move stuff (as they always seem to do) they never seem to appreciate when I tell them "DON'T rev hard on the clutch, be patient, 1st is long!". So now I have a burnt out clutch and a good reason to make the change to a 5 speed. The shorter 1st (I'm going for the w59 Supra with the 3.95:1 1st gear) should make for a nice comfy take off compared to what I have currently and the overdrive will be great for the freeway. As for my tires I've changed to a holden stud pattern and I'm running 15" mags with HQ front end and discs, tire profile is......ummmm, can't remember but it ain't huge, nothing 'unusually' high or low.
I know what you mean about the shifter Dano, even with the 4 speed it's sitting back too far to be comfy, that's why a mate hammered on a piece of bent steel tube onto the shifter for me when I changed the engine over years ago. It's not pretty yet, I'm planning to stick a knob on the end of it and cover it with something nice and fabric-y to make it look more like a shifter. Most people think it's the hand brake when they see it first time! I find it quite easy to use so I'll keep it and wack it onto the new box and see if it's ok as is. There's always a solution ;)
@Warren:
Do you mean clutch cable or speedo cable when you mention the Magna set up? I've got a speedo cable coming from Dellows as part of the kit.
Not sure about cross member and linkages. I'll ask some more specific questions as we get closer I guess.
Once again thanks for your help guys, much appreciated. At some point I'll get some pics and a history of my beast up so I can feel a little more like part of the family :) Cheers,

Hey Morgz
Re the Magna cable thing, Chris (BlackBeddy) has talked about it in the past, and from my understanding it is a cable operated Gear shift mechanisim, the idea being that you can mount the gear shift anywhere you want and the cables connect to the gearbox.
I havent seen one in action but by the sounds of it they are a simple solution to the akward shifter position.
My old valiant had a cable (push button auto) that worked a treat.
Chris may be able to supply more detail on this.

Here is a post on the old site about a Mechanical (http://www.buga.bedfordcf.com/funk/thread.php?id=737) linkage, the cable option would take a lot less time to adapt than this I think.
Although it is an excellent solution

Success! Just wanted to say a huge thanks to Ben and Craig for helping me put in the new box, it was much appreciated and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, despite the odd hurdle I think it all went rather well. I'm still in NZ but I can say that in the couple of drives I took it on before I left it was feeling real good. Will hopefully test out the overdrive gear soon and post some pics somewhere so you can all have a look at my little beast. Cheers fellas.

G'day
Sorry for the late reply.
The Magna gearstick is used with a Toyota Hiace diesel alloy case 5 speed. It uses the same conversion kit as a Supra and is a light, very strong box. It is a very short gearbox and the tailshaft will need to be extended to fit. It has a linkage gearshift setup on the side of the box rather than a gearshift poking out the top. A Magna manual gearstick and cables are then used so the gearshift is of a short length and can be mounted anywhere you want it.

no worries morgan.. thanks for everything had a great time helping you out. cheers

Morgan it was great to meet another beddie nut. As a mechanic you're a great stuntman lol. Give us a call when you're back to finish off the work. Craig ;D ;D
