Title: Can I... Have a column shift auto
Post by: Stangas on May 15, 2012, 01:04:01 AM
did the bedfords come out with a colomn shift auto??

I want a bench seat up front, so i can fit 3 in..

If the bedfords didnt, could a steering column from a donor car (Hq holden) and linkages be doctored? Anyone know a suitable donor?

cheers

The early days we used F100 columns, reasonably easy to adapt in the bedford

Armadale Auto Parts have access to aftermarket columns and I think they have a column auto that is cable opperated , give them a call

i have been in contact with armadale auto's and they have convinced me to go with a LOKAR floor mount automatic shifter which is cable driven..  $450

That way i can mount the bench seat and then put the shifter where ever it fits..  it has a very long shifter 23" so it should fit quite nicely..  2 bends in the shaft also

this will be much easier than converting to column.

Cheers everyone for you input

I so cant wait for this summer to hit so i can paint this girl up..  it is looking better and better every day

the main problem with a loker and bench seat is to get it into park you'll lean to far forward, and due to the hight, you might even have to cut a bit out of the bench to get into first. I hope I'm wrong cos I think a bench seat is cool. ::)

if you get a extra long cable made up you can put the shifter in the dash.
positioning the shifter only depends on how long your cable is.

If you are going to put it on the dash then you could use a Quick silver shifter and if you need a longer cable Flexidrive could make one for you

I have a Q. so you can stick your shifter anywhere if you use a cable. My mechanic was saying that cables can break after a while with all the use they get, he did say that the straighter the line the better, the more bends or curves the more chance of it wearing out quicker. Can you get a heavy duty one made.

preoil your cables before installing them George, there isnt much friction on gear select cables so wear would be minimum, once its in drive it usually stays there for the duration of the trip.
any cable maker could make up heavier duty cables.
as long as you rout your cable up into the enine compartment then through the firewall like the speedo or clutch cable there shouldnt be too much angles to worry about.
cables like graduating curves instead of sharp ones.

Thanks MTY, that helps a lot, being i am doing a custom shifter and location set-up that might make it easier. So can i assume that with the bar instead of the cable you would pretty much need to have the shifter over the top of the box for them to work smoothly.

Hey George, B&M do a conversion kit for the TH700 that changes the linkage setup to a cable mount. Just a bracket that fastens under the trans sump, another that fastens to the shifter mechanism on the side of the trans and a couple of little odds and ends to connect the cable. Got one of these for mine. Just looking at modifying the Honda Astor shifter I found to connect the cable to however if that goes sideways I'll have to look at a different shifter.

Actually they've got a whole lot of stuff you can break your TH700 with...

yeah you guys are right..

i am purchasing a lokar shifter with the floor mount cable driven..  it can be mounted anywhere as long as the cable reaches.

that will buy me enough room.  and it looks pretty specky too..

tossing up on the 16' or the 23' shifter handle..  the 23 has 2 bends in it so will probably be better.

I have found the answer...

Retrotek Smart Shifter
http://www.retrotekspeed.com/product.php?pk=74 (http://www.retrotekspeed.com/product.php?pk=74)

Check this piece of kit out...

It is an electric solinoid driven shifter with a dash mounted push button console...   about $1000
Looks awesome, and the missus has given a tentitive yes

Nothing on the floor now, so plenty of bench seat space

What you reckon?
