Title: Now I've done it
Post by: BusyKiwi on April 23, 2012, 07:36:06 PM
I got engaged over the weekend

That's the good news, bad news is the custom van is up for sale once it's finished, and maybe the standard one too, my bedford trailer project will also be up for sale (soon).
I just want to get the custom van road legal and painted (interior probably wont be finished), probably just paint it a metallic (dark) blue or something basic

wife-to-be has not long brought a house and sadly it's not bedford friendly (driveway or garage) so plan is to either win lotto or get a bit of the mortgage paid off, sell and get a life style block or something with BIG garaging and start again. Next one will be tandem axle flat deck with V8 on woodgrained deck and want to do a tandem swb

So yeah, bummer

Why don't you just rent a garage somewhere? Some storage outfits have large sheds for cars too but renting a garage from someone who doesn't use theirs would be cheaper.

Maybe even a corner of a warehouse somewhere that has spare space. I reckon you'd be better off putting it into storage for a while because there is no way you would ever recoup the cost of the time you have spent on either van to date. Then when you get your lifestyle block sorted you'll be ahead already and just have to dust the old girl down and away you go.

I thought about the storage idea but most places don't like you working on them while there

You won't be able to work on them if you sell them either  ;)  Maybe just storage in the meantime then?

I always remember that line in the movie corvetter summer, talking about the corvette after it was 'stolen', "it's a commodity to be brought and sold"

I've also got other van related hobbies, currently am modifying little hotwheel vans to bedfords (changing all the body lines and stuff), wont mass produce them as they take some much time. But also doing 1/25 scale plastic vans. I have about 12 currently but am working on a bedford one and plan to cut it in half from end to end and make resin copies, customize each and then stick them to the wall (space saver models)

David, David, David. What are you thinking  ???

"it's a commodity to be brought and sold" Correct, so keep the vans and sell the house.  ;D ;D ;D As it'll be half your house anyway, sell it and get a more user frendly house and KEEP THE VANS.

Congratulations on doing the deed anyway. You'll need to keep the custom van to use as a wedding car so that gives you another year or so before moving them on in which time you can sort the house issue out. See, simple. ;) ;)

Hope you can make the meeting at the weekend so we can talk some sense into you.

By the sound of it, it is too late.  He has already asked her ;D ;D

Congrats Busy and welcome the the world of misery we love to call marriage

When I got married I said that there had to be no conditions, take me as I am with all my vices (Bedford, 6 motorbikes, and way too many projects!) and she said yes.

The woman should take you for who you are and all that you entail even if that includes a swag of projects including custom vans!  ;D
I have been happily married now for 2 years!

Hold strong Busy, keep the projects!  :D

She is a great woman, she takes me as I am, it was her idea that I finish

An example of how great she is, less than 2 months after meeting her I took her along to her very first swap meet, she loved it and didn't mind carrying all the parts back to the car (I carried some too :p).
There is a mid winter swap meet where we have to stay the night before (could drive down but easier to stay night in motel), last year i wasn't going to go because they changed locations and figured it might be a bit small, but she insisted that it's our thing, so we go every year.
Also she knows I love my vans, and even supports my toy van addiction, she has found me a few and often rings me asking if I have such and such a van, I just have to teach her not to spend to much on them

I've heard there are 3 rings in marriage, engagement ring, wedding ring and suffering :D

David, It would still be a good idea to hang onto one of the vans as Garry said, then you have the best of both worlds :)

I actually got another one today *gulp* thats 4

The plan was to sell them at one stage as i got plans for a couple more, really want to do a tandem flatdeck CF with v8 on the tray and also want to do a tandem swb, and also want to do a more radical chop, 6inches in the front, 2 at the back

Hey David,

Way to go mate. I'll put in your appologies, both for the meeting and for thinking about selling off you vans.

The misses is a treasure so hang onto her, and the vans, and sell the house. Better still, with just the two of you (at the moment), convert one bedroom into the toy van romm and another into the big van storage area.

I like the idea of the tandem SWB. Next to none around any more. I want to chop down a SWB into a twin cab pickup and would still like to build a trailer from a SWB (or LWB) to tow behind mine. Need to finish mine off first though or "she who shall be obeyed" will toss all my toys out of her cot.

Have fun with the rallies and hope to catch up again soon. You should bring the misses up north for the run at Queens Birthday weekend.

Garry.

She has 2 teen kids, only 1 still at home, so no toy room yet, will just full up the rest of the house with toy vans :D

Garry, I have a swb trailer up for sale soon, front cut off at front doors and another back put on the front, originally was going to do full van with front but I stole the window frame out of it. was going to do dolly wheel on the front with pin for backing (keep the rear wheels in the arch) or it could be made as just a 2 wheeler. I'm only just putting the front of it on, so still lots to do on it, if your keen let me know else will go on tm
The plan was to make it up like the standard cf and then on down the track change it to the custom van style

I'd definately be keen to have a look at your SWB trailer. Let me know when suits you and I'll come over for a squiz before you get too far down the track. I was thinking about making the trailer a dual wheel job to lighten the load up front. Anyway let me know.

Cheers,
garry.

Garry, if your able to get away from work during the week let me know, it's down at murrays workshop, I have taken most of the front off the main body (i stole the screen frame for the custom) and hope to cut the back off the other van next week or week after and weld it on. But if you come down and have a look, and are keen I can make it to the length you want.

Also have a real nice pop top top if anyone is looking for one

Baz, took camera down to take some photos but the batteries died, then I forgot to take the camera back down, but I will. It looks like it's just bolted on (probably a tui ad) and hope to get it off this week so will get some photos.

Garry, I can usually work around you, just make it a fine day ;)
