Well it's been a couple (maybe a few?) years since good old Barry the Bedford has seen the road! He has been sitting in the elements and has aged a little but he is still up for some reviving!
Thought I better start a thread on the revival process so I can look back at the before and after shots and say "...ahhhh that was worth it!.."
Here are a few pics.
Up on the hoist and ready for some love!

Diff came from a SWB model, have now welded new spring mounts and refitted the diff.
Still have to fit the rear wheel cylinders (brake slave cylinders), tracking them down this week:
As you can see old Baz is very cob webby and dirty underneath, under all the mud and grime he is a good old thing!

More to come, need to eat some dinner now!

Has anyone got a spare handbrake linkage?

Not far from having the rear end sorted then it's onto the front end, thinking of running the XB master/LJ booster setup. I would prefer to run the original Bedford master/booster but after reading a few posts I think this may not be ideal because I will have disc front and drum rear....
I have the disc front end on but I think I may need some new discs/rotors and some new calipers. These ones look like they have seen better days...

I need to run new hard lines across the diff and get a T piece and some bits and pieces to mount the brake lines. Does anyone have some photos of their rear end brake line routing etc so I can see how it's meant to go?

Take your calipers into a brake specialist and get them to clean them up and put new seals through them. You'll be amazed at how they come back and it's not all that expensive. Well mine weren't anyway.

Thanks Rogue-boy.
What about the discs?
They are covered in surface rust. Should I get them machined or should I just get new ones?
Cheers
Jock

Should be able to be machined, had mine done $40.00 NZ about a year ago.

Time for an update on Barry's revival. No more pics but will get some this weekend.
Fitted new rear wheel cylinders:
Brand: IBS Brake Parts
Part number: IBS-P5096
Cost: $44 for the pair
(http://yamahait.com.au/images/bedford/IBS-P5096.jpg)
Once they were in I ran brand new brake lines and T piece for the rear end, borrowed a double flaring tool from a friend and bought some brake tube - too easy.
Next I had to elongate the mounting holes in the firewall for the LJ Torana brake booster, I did this with a round hand file. Once that was done I elongated the holes in the XA Falcon master cylinder so that it would fit the booster - again with a round hand file.
Next step was to shorten the push rod that goes from the front of the brake booster into the back of the master cylinder. I cut 30mm off the rod, re-tapped the thread and reinstalled the push rod. I now have the booster and master installed and the rear lines in and all connected.
On the weekend I am going to run new lines to the front end and the brake upgrade will be complete!
While I was working on the van I decided to remove this ugly dash that someone had butchered into the van, man what a job that was. It was welded in like fort knox! I couldn't believe that someone had done such a dodgy job on it. There was so much fibreglass and metal it took ages to cut it all out! The completely butchered the original dash in an attempt to install a stereo head unit, once they realised that the heater/fan ducting was behind where they cut the hole they must have given up on the idea of mounting into the dash so they built a monstrosity of a dash. I found a shed load of electrical wires with a fuse box attached to them that had been fibreglassed in behind the monstrosity, if any of those fuses ever needed to be replaced guess what - they couldn't be because they were inaccessible behind the monstrous structure! hahahahaha

So I will be going with the original Dash which now needs some love but the cabin space is back to how it should be and that's the way I like it!
I fashioned up a linkage to join the handbrake cables out sheet metal and the handbrake works a treat. The rear drums took some adjusting, man those adjustment bolts (square type) on the rear drums were near impossible to move, once I got them moving I sprayed them with some rust penetrant but I don't think they had been adjusted in 20 years! It was back on with the wheels and a couple of victory laps of my cousins work yard once she was rolling again, was good to have the van semi-running - forgot how much I loved the old girl.
Each week we get closer and closer to roadworthy. I'll update with some pics shortly. Take it easy fellow Bedd-ites.

Marky,
Thanks for the pointer with the push rod, got it sorted in the end.

I'm really looking forward to............
1. Having a fuel gauge (Do I really have to remove the tank to fix/replace the fuel sender?)
2. Having a working speedo (Any advice on how to achieve this is most welcomed)
3. Having good brakes!
-
Another successful night and day on the Beddy, had my head down and didn't take any pics AGAIN! Sorry guys...
The good news is that I now have brakes! Finally finished the disc brake setup and it stops like a dream.
Installed the speedo cog (white) and the speedo now reads correct!
The next is to take the fuel tank out and fix the problem of the non-functional fuel gauge.
After that I will start on the body work, I have a front apron coming from Ben (thanks Ben!) and once that is welded to the front of the van I will start on the body work, there's a little rust repair to be done and then it will be sanding, sanding, sanding, sanding, sanding, sanding x 1,000,000 and then paint!
So far so good, happy with the progress. Once I had the brakes bled and tested in the yard I took the van for a quick drive, it was purring along nicely. Can't wait to get it back on the road.
2012 - The Year Of The Beddy!

I just recently purchased this Weber carb setup on ebay, I am going to install it over the next couple of weeks, here's good riddance to the Varajet carb!

hey Jock
i have replaced the tank float in mine...and its read perfect now....

Marky,
When you turned the ignition on did it go straight to the 'FULL' position?
Cheers

ONLY IF YOU HAVE A FULL TANK :D
-
ONLY IF YOU HAVE A FULL TANK :D
Oh fhark I wish my tank was full all day everyday Bed-day!
But it's not the case Baz! She shows full but she is empty... I think it is a common fault. I read here of a similar problem:
Heres a quick fix that worked for me;
i had same problem with the fuel gauge sitting on full all the time, so i read this page which in turn got my bedford game face happening :-\ & i pulled the whole sender unit from the tank, wired it up outside the tank, couldnt get it to register on the gauge while shifting the float up and down. so i took the sender unit into the cheapest looking auto electrician i could find,
turns out i had a build up of x amounts of krap on the main (and only) terminal at the top and the piece that goes through the base plate making a connection problem from the underside as well from buildup there too. cost me 10 bucks to get fixed. pulled apart re contacted cleaned and re terminaled which you could do yo'self if thats the problem, - check that out with a multimeter measuring resistance on both sides of that base plate ....
hope that helps someone without having to trace those hard to follow sender wires or pull apart dashes/ buy new gauges. worth a check first i reckon, worked for me!

Hey jock did you need to put a proportioning valve on for the back brakes after fitting your disks ,as i am working on this conversion at the moment
-
Hey jock did you need to put a proportioning valve on for the back brakes after fitting your disks ,as i am working on this conversion at the moment
No proportioning valve.
-
thanks i will try that when i finish the task!
-
I've just completed the LJ/XB brake conversion.....
and now my back brakes lock up if i hit em hard
options are
1. put softer pads on the front...
put in a proportion valve....that i have in the shed...
-
Yeah they say that can happen,I'm going to get one on hand in case that happen s then I will fit it if needed Also Marky .your SWB Borgie diff looks good in my Van ,I will try and Post a pick
-
Great!! wish i had never sold it now!! hahah

No good!
Did anyone else have this problem? I didn't know I was meant to fit a proportioning valve? ??? ??? ???
Shi-za.
-
you can get an adjustable proportioning valve. but there illegal cause people lock the back brakes off with them (cause no ones ever used vice grips before???)
or get smaller bore sized rear wheel cylinders. if you dont know what your doing its real guess work... i dont know what im doing lol so its guess work:)
-
Everything on a Bedford is Guess work......... ;)
-
Had the same problem and hoppers stoppers changed wheel cylinders and still the same. Adjustable Proportion valves arnt illegal but they have to be put in a position that accesability is hard to access. I put my horn over the top of mine and past engineer and rwc
-
oh everyone i talk to says there illegal?
-
my mechanic and mentor tells me..changing wheel cylinders diameters is not the solution...
he recommends to try out softer pads on the front...1st...
then if that doesn't change it put the valve inline...
.i have a valve in the shed..not sure what its is off..but..with the new brake set up
i can put my head into the windscreen if I'm not careful....
i tried out the new brakes first on a grassy patch...to see how even the pressure to each wheels is.....
.no matter how i braked it..with different pressure......... the backs always lock up first...so its a safety issue for me for sure
but having a van that the backs lock up is probably more illegal than the proportion valve...
can't remember which set on toranas had the valve..but there was one on ebay a while back for $50.... ..
i wil be fitting it to the van...on the weekend...
Happy Vanning

just dont stand on the brakes as hard?
-
just dont stand on the brakes as hard?
thats all good untill you have an emergency situation and your on auto pilot you brake hard and lose control cause its all locked up.
ben
-
guys you might need to check if you have the right master cylinder the 4 wheel drum master has a 60/40 bias spring and the disc/drum master has 70/30 bias hence the rear locking first you are actually not applying enough line pressure to the front 60% as opposed to 70% also theres a reason the master has 2 outlets for the front brake as the calipers displace a lot more fluid .hope this helps Cheers
-
Most 4x4 wagons have a self proportioning valve in the back. Maybe retro fitting something like this would be helpful to you. It certainly help if you started putting some load in the back.
-
Hilux 4x4's have a brake prop. valve that mounts to frame & diff might be worth looking at

exactly ben...im fine to drive around and have done a few emergency stops and a lot of testing before i hit the highway....
my new brakes are excellent ..just want them to be perfect..... ;D
-
I'm alittle lost here, may be because I haven't read the full post, but what about the set up the duel wheel jumbo is using on the rear.
-

Merlin,
Are you advising that I run a seperate line to each front caliper because at present I am only running one line to the front and splitting it to each caliper. The master cylinder that I have is PBR part number: P6258A
How do I know what bias spring I have?
Cheers
Jock
-
OK I SEE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT NOW........
-

ben
all 3 of my vehices (SWB bedford poptop, holden rodeo, nissan 4x4) lockup if i stand on the brakes hard enough, and you just keep the pannic pressure on them,
the SWB bedford poptop has " No preportioning valve" holden HQ disks on front, standard bedford master cylinder and power booster, and standard bedford drum brakes on the back. (HQ stud pattern front n back)
(anyone know how much it is to redrill highway diff axles from std bedford to HQ Studpattern? ????)
brakes are perfect, no dramas at all
i dont think u should be on auto pilot when driving any vehicle.
if i have drama,s with brakes i just take the vehicle to a brake service centre, then you have a warantee, if anything goes wrong.
sounds like Merlin knows the go with the disc/drum master has 70/30 bias spring,
but ive got no idea what spring is in my brake system.

Well another weekend on Barry and some more progress made!
This arrived from Ben during the week. The butchered front end is now well on its way to being fixed!
Here's a shot of the dash since I removed the bodgy dash that was in it, now to clean this one up for paint.
-
After a small amount of marking out and trimming we made some cuts to the front of the van and the replacement front apron provided by Ben, here are the off cuts. I was suprised just how thin the bod panels were, like paper!
We held the front apron in place for welding with a vice grip on either end, some more grinding and some body filler to fill in the gaps and it will look a million bucks! :D Here's a few pics.
Some pics of some of the rust repair and fibreglass filler, next step lightweight body filler then paint.

And there we go, Barry awaits some more reviving next weekend. Another Bedford is being rescued!

Yep that's it Baz, no more duel wheels and no more Bedford 6 stud pattern. It's got HQ pattern all round now.

i'm liking the progrees Jock - keep up the good work :)

Yep agree, looks good, can't wait to change mine, all ready, still need to find some 9" Beddie drums :( (with 15" x 60s) on here and a 3.5 ratio, she should drive much better.
-
I have often wondered, Do dual wheels make the van hard and bouncy, or is it just a matter of running lower pressures?
Also could you simply remove the inner wheels?
-
lookin good Jock

Hey mate you can have the rack setup for free.
Once it's removed from the van I will let you know and we can arrange pickup.

Another good day on Barry yesterday, started to sand back the fibreglass reinforced filler and apply the lightweight body filler. Some more sanding and a final application of lightweight body filler and that will be the end of the bog job. Next step is to sand the rest of the body and prepare for paint.
It's taking shape... Keep pluggin away I say!
The front end starting to resemble a Bedford CF!

That's a fibreglass bonnet that was on the van when I bought it. I have another fibreglass bonnet WITH THE CENTRE LINE that I will be using for the final paint.
-
Same colour again, or time for a change, Jock what diff did you use. Bas
Nah not the same colour, must be different. Can't go to all this effort for it to look the same Baz! Not sure on colour yet.... It's never an easy decision. The diff is a CF Bedford SWB diff with a borg warner centre, it is drum brake and it has a 3.45 centre ratio.
I am happy with the final width.

ive just bought 2 more fibreglass bonnet moulds (made by dany riley) one is the one without the bonnet line and other one has xr8 scoops in it..

Hi Guys! I have been offline for a while SICK with the flu! What a drag that was..... Knocked me for nearly 2 weeks!
Here are the latest pics of Barry, still got one more layer of lightweight body filler to put on and then onto sanding the body and getting it ready for paint. Every little bit counts. Hope you have all been well. Cheers. Jock
