Title: Help Please
Post by: Bas / NZ on March 10, 2012, 05:47:06 PM
For those that ran a 3.8 v6 in their Bedford, or those with knowledge, Van has always heated up but the temp gauge has always keeped low, put a new thermosstat in and now the temp gauge is working ??? took van for a run with a mate van ran very hot, opened the bonnet and my made said gee your elec fan is quite, guess what not going, chased the wires and they are tied up under the dash, not even hooked up, does anyone know please where these wire up to as I know the fan switches off and on.  /   Also for the NZ guys, do you know where you can get the straight length braded raidiator hose from Thanks Heaps..... :)

Ok just did a check on Old Holden, seems the ECU controls the fan ??? may have to hook up a man switch or does anyone know how to hook it into the ECU, wire colours etc. Cheers

I'll have a look at mine tomorrow for you

when the fan runs, it runs. if you have your engine cover off you'd feel the breeze at the back of your van

Thanks David that would be great, hooked it up to the battery, gee it's loud, might of hooked it up the wrong way as it was blowing the air out through the radiator very strong.. :D but cooled it down in a couple of mins....

yeah the pod filters are a lot noiser than standard

did you ever put the timing chain gears in ?

Had a look at my van, looks like the fan wires goes to a relay in the engine bay fuse/relay unit.
from there I can't work out where it goes (mutlimeter died)

but at a guess I'd say a wire to power (poss ign or fuse box), wire from sensor (or ecu), earth and fan (two wires from fan motor, one is black the other brown)

Thanks David, yes on my fuse / relay box there is a marking Thermo Fan, but it dosen't have a fuse / relay attached to it, guess they forgot to put it in, from there the wires join to the Blue / white wire from the ECU.
Will go with a after market one as they are ajustable. At the moment I hooked it up to a lighted switch and acc so comes on when I start the van, but have the option to switch it off if need be.

As for the pod filter they look good under the bonnet BUT..... May have to mount the VN air box in place where the heater is as I did in the camper. What about those dome type foam ones, do they make the same noise ???

If you like I can scan the wiring diagram from the Haynes VN Worshop Manual if you think that might help.

Those aftermarket ones can be an arse to seal where the sensor probe is inserted into the waterflow. I had the most luck with a urethane sealant although it is then a sod to remove the hose after it has set.

Have you used Marley spouting for your intake Baz?

Thanks Rougue, pulled a wiring diagram off a link on old holden, the man.. works fine, the fan might be on most of the time for now, but it does get hot inside that engine cover, and can turn it off for motorway use, will take it to an auto elec later on as I have no relay / fuse there at all and also looks like the link up on the ecu is not there either. Yes the after market is hard to seal but I guess worth a try.

Heres a outline fitting it  http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Thermo-Fan-Install/A_2015/article.html (http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Thermo-Fan-Install/A_2015/article.html)

Yes I used 80mm Marley if you want to mount it directly to the throttle body it's a perfect fit, and takes the 77mm pod filter. Just got to paint it Black ;)

Baz

To quieten down your pod filter, find an cheap alluminium pot that fits over the pod, allow enough distance at the base for air flow - say 12mm alway around.

That should quiet it down some and protect the filter as well.

Fitting a relay is a piece of piss. You just need to identify the pin on the ECU that sends the control signal to the relay and Bob's your aunt's live-in lover. Would be tidier than the external unit.

Matte and I had a bit of a conversation about using Marley spouting in my van thread although I'm buggered if I can find where now as I was using it to set up my air intake as well. The PVC it is made out of is not heat resistant and you could end up with it melting in your engine bay especially as you say it gets quite hot in there. I've used the Marley to model mine but am going to make it up out of steel. I may heat wrap it to keep the air temperature down as well. Matte had an experience of that stuff melting over an engine. Wasn't good.

If you do that then you defeat the purpose of the pod filter and all it will be doing is sucking in the heated air from the engine bay however if you fitted a shield around it but facing the other way then you would still get cold air flowing into it. It may cut down the noise a bit but it would also protect it from sucking in hot engine air when your're sitting idling at the lights so would probably perform better. More of a cold air box.

Guess it could melt, but I have good clearance at all points, so will see how it goes, but if you are getting a good flow of cold air through it, it will lower some of the heat, looks like I will be heading back to the VN box any way, You can all ways form a half round heat sheild under so it runs between the motor and piping, the heat from the engine bay itself will do very little as this stuff stands up to a hot Auckland summer day  :D not sure what it's like down your way  ;) but at the end of the day I want the air to flow freely up into the engine bay and the bedford has a big grill area, will keep an eye on it any signs of melting and the box will be next on the list....

Yes a heat rap around it would be a good idea, that way if it melts, it would be contained... ;D ;D ;D

David, when / how often does your thermo fan come on / cut in Cheers Bas - think they are set to about 110, talked to a guy the other day with one in his van / v6 3.8 he said his fan stoped working and could not run the van for more than 3 mins without it heating up., stange since I changed the termostat the temp guarge works

it's about a 1/4, or 2mm above it on the VN gauge
comes on whenever it hits the mark, if stuck in traffic it stays on for a few minutes then cuts out and comes back on in another 5 mins or so.

The year before last I took it to kumeu and got stuck in the traffic for an hour, it never once went above the mark where the fan comes in. down the motorway it never comes on as engine runs to cold - to much air coming through grill
