Ok Guys, what is this for on the Jumbo diff, the plate is only welded on to the diff so only external, the unit itself is spring loaded and has a Hydraulic line attached to it. Need to know as the single wheel diff does not have this. Cheers Bas
Ok could look it up in the Workshop Manual, but asking you guys is more fun. An I know how you love photo's

It looks like a form of stabiliser/sway/torsion bar set up.
But it doesnt seem thick enough compared to conventional ones.
Just a guess really

Just a guess, Is it a brake overload system? When the van bottoms out, the brakes go on to stop or slow you down

Diff number 2, looks a lot more heavy duty, this is the one that will replace the duel wheel diff.

im fairly positive first one is early model swb diff, has 28 spline axels and 9inch drums, second is later model obviously more beefy. with 21 spliine axels and 10inch drums.
-
The second one on your photos is very similar to my diff in my CF280 (1980).

Anyone got a smart Idea to remove stuck axles, have used a slide hammer, no luck, guess I could heat up the bearing to free it, but may be not such a good Idea?
And yes thanks for the above info, will use the second diff as it would look better under a Jumbo, looks beefy.
-
Try putting on a wheel with the nuts only on a few turns, then use the wheel like a slide hammer. The extra weight of the wheel will often do the trick.

or if its really stuck put an old wheel on and smack the back of it with a sledge hammer.. work your way around. ive only ever had 1 out of about 10 stubborn axels not come out this way. and i ended up leaving it in and it went to the scrap heap.

And once you get the axle out treat the bearings like a new born baby as they are about $200 each
-
heat the back of the bearing housing.
-
and use a 5ft length of chain fixed onto 1 of the studs with the wheelnut. (make sure the nut is tightened right up so not to damage the stud)
d/shackle a big heavy steel bar on the loose end and use it like a slide hammer.
(the steel bar needs to be very heavy)
it works every time for me..
cheers marty

heat the back of the bearing housing.
ive been told you can damage the housing this way. so not adviseable

Thanks for all you help guys, went with the wheel set up, gee it felt good to beat the sh...t out of it, haven't done that for a long time. Worked a treat, just stuck now with the pinion nut have a socket but it's to far down, need a tube socket or ring spanner. David have 2x new bearings I brought of Trade Me 2.5 years ago, $40.00 the pair. ;) put a new set of adjustable shocks on the back, fitted the reworked driveshaft - new hanger bearing and uni's and rebalance, van back on the road, new single wheel diff just about ready for the fit, looks good with the toyo 15 x 60 x 295's on it. :D
New Shocks, set to soft ride, what a differance, happy boy
