G'Day all,
A Handy to know Bedford Tip:-.
Recently got stranded by way of broken throttle inner-cable. After trying at Busons, Repco, & even Motorcycle shops, the final solution was a Bicycle cable, which has the same fitting on end for the clevis clip on pedal, same thickness and certainly long enough to reach carby, all for the grand old sum of $5:00. Phew!!! Boy, was I panicking, though, thinking it was going to be yet another one of those horrendous 'Bedford Part Nighmares'. A hugh relief, thought I'd share. Cheers, Kerry. ;)

Good one Kerry That's handy to know I think I need one

Thanks for this Kerry. It was one of my (many) concerns about taking mine long distances. What happens if the cable broke. Couldn't do much under the hump while driving and might be a bit difficult to wind the revs up with the idle screw.
Good tip. Much appreciated.

Glad to help, Neil. Yes, a simple little thing like that can totally leave you stranded. I was lucky at the time to have fellow campers with me to run me 70 k's into the nearst town. That little $5 inner cable saved me well over $500 on back of Tow Truck to bring van home, as the RACV couldn't help! So I bought a spare as well, for peace of mind. Cheers. ;)

another way out of this situation.
If the cable breaks ant the throttle pedal end, then bolt the cable end to some where convenient, and pull the outer cable housing this will work the throttle.
Years ago a group of friends and I were on bikes 300 miles from home late on a sunday night, on guy broke a clutch cable so we looped it over the seat and down to the passangers foot pedal, the passanger pulled up on the cable to push the clutch in and slowly released the cable letting the clutch out.
I was funny watching them try and get it but after 10 minutes they were going no worries and we made it home without futher problems.

I also wondered whether a guitar string would work as well (if you happen to have a guitar on board, that is), it has the same type ball on the end, and I believe 'A' string would be the right thickness, although I'm not sure if it would be long enough, but a creative mind could probably make it work. ;D

ive used a lenth of bailing string before, lol
works wonders on windscreen wipers 2, just tie to drivers wiper in through drivers window out through passenger window and onto passanger wiper,:) grab bailing string and move sideways depending on how fast rain is fast or slow, works ok in an emergency.

i have had this happen twice in different vans..
1st van was a manual.
i took engine cover off tied a bit of wire around throttle arm and used left hand for accel.
2nd van was an auto.
i used my left big toe to operate throttle arm. it got hot after 100kms so i took the spring off and used it like cruise, just had to adjust it when i needed to change speed for something. drove another 200kms like that.
what do i say you do what you have to get out of the situation you find yourself in..

I was surfing youtube yesterday and was watching some rally vids and there was one car that the acc. cable had obviously broken so his co driver was sitting in the engine bay working the throttle whilst they were going along. :o Bloody pissed myself laughing :D :D

When mine went it broke at the carby end, we were on the way back from the beach so i pulled the engine cover off and got one of my mates to give it shit via a pair of pliers while i operated the steering and brakes, the novelty was high for the boys if nothing else.
I bought a universal cable and changed the ends off my original sheath onto this new one. I could have used the original sheath which would have been considerably easier, tho the new one has to be better.. hahah
Bike cable would have saved me $25 odd however. Good discovery
