I've got the standard 10 inch back drum setup on my CF1. It has a cogged wheel adjustment setup that you access through a slot in the backing plate. You can shift the cog with a flat screw driver. Direction to turn sounds a bit complicated, but if you are lying underneath the passenger side of the van and position yourself in front of the rear wheel then you turn the cog anti clockwise. Adjustment is clockwise for the driver's side if you are lying in the same position.
Not sure if the 9 inch setup is the same.

I don't have a cog wheel adjuster. All I see is a long thread with a square end. I'm guessing that this is what I have to adjust

make sure you clean the thread with a wire brush, and spray a bit of wd40, or put a few a few drops of transmission oil on the thread.
it will make life a bit easier.

That's interesting. Is it definitely a factory standard rear axle or do the OZ vans have a different setup?

that sounds like the fronts drums. we are refering to the rears..

yes they are all the same setup. to reach the cog you must stick a screwdriver inside the backing plate through an oval hole

My rears have the square type too, the thing with these is it's basically a offset square so you only have to turn it within 360 degrees as unlike the cog method it's not doing up a thread.
Do it with the wheel on, jack the van up so wheel is off the ground, turn the square (either way doesn't matter) until the brakes bind, back it off and slowly redo until you feel it just starting to touch.
Note, always end on a tighten turn, not a loosen and adjust handbrake after adjusting the brakes.
oh and make sure the handbrake is off when adjusting brakes ;)

from my experience the difference here is between 9" rear brakes and 10" rear brakes. 9" rear seems to have square nut adjust and 10" the oval slot and cog setup. Both are documented in the bedford manual.

Thanks for all the help. Cleaned and sprayed the thread bolt. Will jack up the beast tomorrow and have another go. After that, it will be time for a speedo repair
