marks are a pain..you can never find them..
take #1 plug out..
turn motor over by hand until piston is at the top use a torch to see
take dizzy cap off
rotor should be facing forward
there is a mark on the rotor
is should line up with a mark on the dizy(cut out)
thats top dead center
look at the harmonic balancer..
there should be a cutout as well
and 6 deg before top dead center is good
should be timming marks on the crank case..

hope this helps

step 4.... if th rotor is facing backward you have the wrong TopDeadCentre and do another cycle till its facing forward. there are 2 top dead cetres. one is compression stroke other is exhast stroke. i think
cheers

another trick to use instead of a torch is to slide a screwdriver down the plug hole and turn until the screwdriver rises, and then falls, when it starts to fall wind the back until it is at the top again, this is top dead centre, and the timing marks should line up.

i used a screwdriver before and it got stuck as the piston came up..
must have been high compression??
-
try and use a drinking straw, might save a piston or rings etc. just a thought.

nice idea dano!! yeh its definatly a must to stick something in there to get the feel of where the piston is..
