Hi there all! A question for those in NZ. Where will I find a source for ball joints. rod ends and lower arm bushes?
Isn't it amazing how suspension joints wear out when your van is parked up! Got the camper out, took it for a warrant and had it failed for wirn joints. It has none about 200km since the last check! I'm finding it bloody interesting checking out what is being done to vans out there. Thanks, Snow

why dont you check them yourself make sure there not pulling your leg.. ball joints dont wear out from siting in the garage:(
-
Is possible I suppose but this is at a garage that I have used lots of times before and they have never pulled the wool over me before. I feel that it is probably best for me to go through every thing my self as the camper has not been restored before. That way I know that I can rely on it in the future. Thanks, Snow

last time I needed ball joints I got them from Martin at http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/older-cars-kit-cars (http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/older-cars-kit-cars)

try bnt automotive, they are nationwide and usually have them.
-
There are two different size bottom ball joints. The later ones are slightly larger.
-
Hey Snow,
You can get them all from a bunch of places. BNT, Supercheap, Repco, Pedders all have them or can get them. Costs vary a bit so try them all and get the best price. Hard to find rubber bushes these days but nolethane ones are readily available.
Cheers,
Garry.

Thanks for that. It all helps. Garry, I don't know if you remember but I called you early this year to ask for the size of holes in the towing eyes in the front cross member. You were spot on! I made a towing pole and easily towed the camper from Napier back to Matamata. The pole has since been used by a friend to recover another camper from Whakatane. It definitely makes towing a breeze! Thanks for your help and hope we can catch up at some time. Cheers, Snow

Hey snow, any chance you went to VTNZ for your wof ?
If you did and the balljoint is good, clean it up and go back (make sure it is good though). half those guys don't know what their on about and recheck should pass, and make sure the boot isn't split/broken.
-
Hi Busy, no it wasn't VTNZ but I know what you are saying. That idea has crossed my mind. I will have a closer look at all the suspension joints before I rip it all apart. By the way, nice work on both your vans! Snow

Hi Snow,
Glad to help out and good to see the towing bar worked out OK.
Look forward to catching up at some stage.
Cheers,
Garry

Hi there all. Just to let you know that I did get ball joints. I got them from George Stock and Co. I found them on line and costs were $34.13 for top, $36.75 for bottom, and $22.84 for rod ends.(all plus gst). I wasn't keen to pay the $496 for the arm bushes though! Good service, ordered one day and they arrived the next. Guess what I will be doing this weekend.

Could you post the part numbers and manufacturers please? Even the website you found would be good. I'm toying with pulling out my front end (keep it clean!) and giving that a good going over once I have everything fitted and it would be handy to have the replacement parts on hand. Thanks.

next time im in new zealand im gunna buy this guy out! that is dirt cheap!
-
That's kinda what I was thinking.
-
I thought it was cheap too! That's why I got all four ball joints rather than just replacing the one that they failed the WOF on. I'll post the part numbers after the weekend, after I have fitted them and are sure they have supplied the right ones. Turns out this company imports these parts and are the supplier to Repco.

last time i got ball joints i think i got them for $25 each from pedders

I don't know.
Mine is an 82 and it has the larger ones, and I only suspect that the change happened in 80/81 when the facelift model came out, as it had many other small changes.
-
I think there were actually changes to the early shape in the late 70's for that sort of thing. I remember reading something here about it. Ben or Chris could probably tell you as they have and have had so many vans.
-
the only place i have been able to find ball joints and tie rod ends has been of the uk ebay ... cause most place i have been and asked they have no idea what im talking about haha
-
Worby876,
Mainly ...
"Early models" - CF1's vans produced from 1969 till 1980.
"Later models" - CF1 "facelifting" models (produced from 1980 till 1984) and CF2's vans (from 1984 till 1987).
But at any case you will check your original dimensions of ball joints.
Hope this will help.
p.s. Through your avatar picture I think your van must be included in "early model" range of Bedford vans.

From memory, 1976 onwards had the larger balljoints, and the LWBs always had the larger ones?
Hopefully someone can confirm or correct this.
I had an order with JW 8 months ago, and am still waiting. I was told they were in stock when i first called, then got told a week later the weren't actually in stock, and still havent heard back..
$60 for upper and lower balljoints, and yes thats an 'each' price.
These new options look favorable
-
find the Quinton Hazell part number for upper joints for:
BEDFORD CF 97000 SERIES 1969-73
VAUXHALL
CRESTA PB, PC 1962-72
VELOX PB 1962-65
VISCOUNT PCE 1966-72
once you have the part number try repco - they quite often have the parts but no cross reference so they cannot find them
Track rod ends are QR1379
bottom are ball joint is CF QSJ617, model Bedford CF 18-25cwt 97000 series (to ch CY636000) 1969-74

what are the differences in the larger and smaller ( dumb question in know )
will the disk setup off a cf2 fit a cf1 ball joint or will i need to change to larger one
-
The guy I bought my CF2 discs from said they will fit all cfs.
The axles bolted straight onto my 1982 facelift......So simple! And i have one lower wishbone from an early model with the smaller ball joint.
