Hi there i have to replace my roof soon as the dum ass before me packed every square inch of the roof with sponge by the way he also put in a pop top and there is bolt holes every where so i am thinking replacing it with a roof from ben or something out of the square and welding a flat top who knows ???? tell me what you think rizzo out

something out of the square and welding a flat top
Nooooooooooooo! Don't do it! BLECH!
-
go to sheet guy and get him to bend some gutter sections up and weld them in , in the last 6months there has been stacks of info on replacing the gutters including profiles and how they go together.Including a complete roof replacement.
-
this is no small job(ask me how i know) having the gutters bent up is not that easy as the gutter and cant rail is one piece and they are not straight if you can get doner gutters that is the way to go i have about 5' left in sydney as well as a roof cut with a sun roof in the front that you may be abel to get a patch pannel out of i have replaced over 10' gutter on the wifes and am about to put the roof back on it is a huge job and not for the faint hearted check out this thread if you want some idea of what your in for

Cheers Gav

Forget the gutters alltogether and weld on some 5mm rod, it will give it a clean look but still have a "beauty line"
-
the problem with removing the gutters is the roof is wider than the sides and a lot of your strength comes from them so have a good think about it first
-
Save yourself a lot off trouble & heartake & money find a better one & use that one for spairs By the sounds of it there is a lot off body work & that is a pain & can be very costly Just my 2bobs worth Cheers Reid

Hi bugas thanks for all your ideas i think i have to step back and look at the big picture and have a good think i guess iam in to much of a hurry i have to slow myself down and do things slowly rizzo out

Hi,
My Brothers is fixing the guttering on mine now, best way as he chose is hes got about 4ft of right angle aluminum and pot rivet each end to the original roof guttering , this is his mould to do fibre glassing on inside of this guttering to get the shape.
Chipping away roof paint first OFCORSE THERE IS BLOODY RUST & BOG AGAIN in the roof,lol..so he will do patch fibre glass the holes up, sanding, then start the fibre glassing on inside of the gutter to the roof, pull away the Aluminum after the f'glass is dried then paint over new guttering. ;D
I will take pix now!
It was too bigger job for the rust in the front floors, especially driver side wheel arch was stuffed too,to cut the floor out and reweld he could but the shape &replace the wheel arch was the problem.
,so he fibreglassed that instead aswell and its rock hard strong will last a life time!
Good luck mark!

Im uploading gutter/Roof pix my brothers working on now,I dont know how to upload pix here,so i put it in my Album ,go to page 7 gallery.Skull gear stick is mine!

Thanx Mark,
Whilst my poor Brothers do all the hard shitty work, i had fun making new decor on the inside, all recycled stuff or opps shop stuff for inside, bar the black carpet walls any way, that was most expensive part of interior i guess and got cheap at kmart the carpet! Now, enough of me...
STAGE:2 of pix up in my Gallery page 7 now, ie: fibreglass gutters!
My gutters will last a life time, rock hard finnished tday!
Steve did about 4hrs prep yesturday,4hrs fibreglassing tday, pull off aluminum mould/extrusion tomorrow, sand and paint, YAY..new gutters!:) 12hrs and all new again,
I LOVE MY BROTHER, he freakn Rocks man! ;D
-
no ofence intended but if you glass your gutters up you will be doing it again with in 5 years
-
Hey Pooch talk him to make a complete beddie out off fiberglass & you's will make a fortune
-
By the way Pooch on page 1-2 of my Camper Update posts you will see what I done to strengthen up my camper roof Hope this helps Cheers Reid
-
Hi again what i can see the gutters looks ok to me and even if they only last 4-5 years no big deal because no one knows whats going to happen the next day if we could all see in to the future the world would not be in such a shit all i do is take each day as it comes and i still cant work this new camera catch ya rizzo out

Im the same Mark...5yrs is a long time for Beddys & me..I wanted the fibre glassing,if steve had his way he would strip the whole van back to metal and start again, like he restores hiis vinatge motorbikes, like a show peice, me..i want a van i dont care if it gets scratch, just a good motor, gearbox n breaks is all that matters to me,7months in the garage is enough for me,95%finished now,and i just want to hit the hwy to hell.
Wayne my other brothers a A class welder, he can do the proper job later,wn i fall off in 5yrs,fine by me,lol,...Im over it..i want to have some bloody adventure in this thing..its all safe,so thats all that matters to me,i want to hit cruise OZ b4 i die, lol!

Hope you used Epoxy amd not polyester ?
-
Hmmm..Dont know, why??
Ill ask him...whats the diff?
-
OK, googled the Diff..
Steve said its a general purpose resin and doesnt actually say on the tin, epoxy or other.
If gutters it last five years or a year then that better than getting all wet without anything!
The day we bought it and evvverything fell off as we drove it home from Qld to Vic,lol, everything we touched broke..anything will beat what we had!
Thanx boys for yr concerns,Ruv u rong tiiime! ;D

By the sound of it you used a gp polyester resin (that you added a catalyst such as MEPK to)
"Epoxy laminating resins exhibit high performance characteristics when compareds with polyester resins. The type of epoxy governs the mixture ratio with a prescribed hardener to activate the curing time. Epoxy resins are a specialised system that are generally regarded as expensive if the use of polyester resin is satisfactory"
While it is common to associate polyester resins and epoxy resins, their properties are sufficiently different that they are properly treated as distinct materials. Polyester resins are typically low strength unless used with a reinforcing material like glass fibre, are relatively brittle unless reinforced, and have low adhesion. Epoxies, by contrast, are inherently strong, somewhat flexible and have excellent adhesion. However, polyester resins are much cheaper.
Epoxy resins typically require a precise mix of two components which form a third chemical. Depending on the properties required, the ratio may be anything from 1:1 or over 10:1, but in every case they must be mixed exactly. The final product is then a precise thermo-setting plastic. Until they are mixed the two elements are relatively inert, although the 'hardeners' tend to be more chemically active and should be protected from the atmosphere and moisture. The rate of the reaction can be changed by using different hardeners, which may change the nature of the final product, or by controlling the temperature.
By contrast, polyester resins are usually made available in a 'promoted' form, such that the progress of previously-mixed resins from liquid to solid is already underway, albeit very slowly. The only variable available to the user is to change the rate of this process using a catalyst, often Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone-Peroxide (MEKP), which is very toxic. The presence of the catalyst in the final product actually detracts from the desirable properties, so that small amounts of catalyst are preferable, so long as the hardening proceeds at an acceptable pace. The rate of cure of polyesters can therefore be controlled by the amount and type of catalyst as well as by the temperature.

polyeser will adher but not too flash. i pulled off some polyester off a van that dint crack off metal for 10 years?? thats pretty good going:)
i still wouldnt recommend polyester thou

Hmmm..Dont know, why??
Ill ask him...whats the diff?
Polyester has a higher wax content, will still stick to metal, but not as good. Your main conern is to cover all metal inside with reasin, if no air can get in metal can't rust, that is saying you removed all the rust first.............
-
Hmmm.GOOD Idea bazman! ;D Shall do!
Thanku

Hi there cords would you have 2 roof ribs for swb the idiot cut through mine when he did the pop top thanks rizzo
