Thanku for all that help vintageHolden man! ;D
Question for all members:
Has anyone put aircon in themselves, under the dash older style basic one is what i want, heard its the compressors to the engine parts is the hardest bit,is a basic one a pain in ass to put in or not?
Should i just save up my bux and get a professional to dont it?
Think my brother wants to do anymore hard stuff on my beddy, hes truely over it! :-\

if you go to the wreckers and get all the brackets and pulleys for the air pump of any holden straight 6, this will make it alot easier
-
Hmmm, ok..Thaku Rossie for that advice,
maaaaaaybe THAT could sway my bro to do one morrrrrrrre thing for his darling sister! :-\

Hey Rizzo, we do want pics, i still need to do air for my van so seeing your set up may help decide. Did you buy the parts from an air con place or is it out of a wrecked car.

A/C Compressor: (look up for better definition if need be) You can pretty much use what you want if it fits.....remember that you might have to spend hrs making brackets etc, or try to find a similar motor that should have all the bits ,then find one in good cond, not too hard but a bit of effort required, I think the inlet and outlet have to be at the top and DON’T use if it doesn’t have the correct amount of oil in it. Also don’t go to old because the gases changed a few years back, I think now days its HFC134a, make sure all components are compatible.
Condenser: (radiator looking thingy) again as long as it fits, as big as you can go..... you can also remote mount these but will need a fan to cool / condense the gas back into a liquid.
Dryer: is needed as close to the Evaporator as poss, dry’s any moisture in the gas.
Evaporator: Again as big as it fits, in the location you want to put it. Consider where you want to run your ducting , how many vents ,location of your vents and if you can actually get the ducting to the vents (this always catches you out)
Few other tips: Do your research into local trades that can make up the special hoses, again I guess you might be able to use the old ones off the same car you got the other bits off. I think your local good auto sparky shop should be able to make hoses up for you.
Controls: probably the hardest thing to sort out but generally if you purchase an after market evaporator they should come with some controls, make sure you check this out.
Maybe for a budjet build for a beddie you could look at the VB,VL....... I haven’t looked into these as I’m going for after market pieces and am piecing it as I go. These are the pieces I’m going for, mainly for performance and looks.
Look at for these sites for research, most don’t sell retail but get part #’s then I do the ebay thing.
Cooldrive.com.au
Jayair.com.au
Autoairparts.com.au
Here’s a simple kit from ebay just as an example. Remember as big as you can fit as we have a lge box to cool.

Good stuff Dano. ;D I am hoping to use the entire aircon system from my vp commodore, and as i hope to graft in the dash as well it might just work. Fingers crossed :-\ :-[ :-\

Heaps of info here, an introduction to air cond,
http://www.vintageair.com/catalog.asp (http://www.vintageair.com/catalog.asp)
just found and spoke to local dealer (Perth) Paul, he said I can come in and grab a few "blanks" (ac under dash units) to take home and try , how cool is that, thought i only got this service from the USA....will let you know what unit is best, also can delete the beddie heater and use this combo unit insted.
-
THANKYOU Dano for all that info,
ive found one i can buy,but will have to ask him how old it is as u said the gases have changed which is interesting and didnt know that at all,
so thankyou for helping us all in the Aircon dept,
U Rock! ;D
-
if you get an older system that was not designed to run 134A gas, get it charged with HR12 gas, it's awesome stuff super cold and no need to change hoses or any of that gear.
-
hey Dano, thats great to hear, I'd be keen to catch up when you have the 'blanks' so i can see if they fit under my dash..
I was tempted to have a blank shipped over from the Us, but would much rather local!
