that looks kinda cool.
sucks when shipping is more than the item
-
I think that is a scam. >:(
-
i dunno if it is a scam , getting this to come over from the uk is cheap and a fuel cap isnt exaclty a expensive item

I think hes talking about the fuel filler cap

What are the elec windows units like then, anyone know. ???

I have been looking at autoloc, but the one thing that keeps coming back is, that you need a heavy duty set-up to handle the weight of the glass and winders. For now i am still looking around for something heavy duty, after all, the last thing you want is to set it all up have it working, then have it burn out because the gear was under powered. I'm sure there is something out there.

i have a couple of 74 jag doors with electric winders and that i am going to look at adapting. still got to pull every thing to bits to see how it looks. most of the modern stuff is bit light weight, have to keep spraying the tracks with silicon to stop the motors burning out when they are more than 5yrs old.
Lots of ideas - shed full of parts - need more time

In my custom van I used some jap ones - of course I did it the hard way.
The biggest problem with the jap ones is they are designed for curved glass, the CF has flat glass ... I straightened out the runner and as I had a mate in the glass business didn't worry about the mounting of it. Because of the roof chop I had to get new windows made so got them to drill them at the same time, they are toughened so are strong but wouldn't do it this way again.
pros of this method:
gave me electric windows
cons of this method:
straightening out the rails causing the wire to become loose (it can be tightened) but the biggest problem (if you can remember what you got it out of) is having to straighten another one if it ever crapped out and it wasn't a 5min job
drilling the glass, doesn't allow for much adjustment of the window (not that you should need much but can be adjusted on mounts) and the cost if you don't have a mate in the business.
Isn't a 5 min job
makes you swear and throw things :D
There is another universal kit on the market, is like autoloc's but has been around for yonks, a lot of hot rodders used them. I don't think it had a name, just universal electric window kit.
-
Busy, i went the same route ;)
But i used BA falcon motors, flattened out the runners, i CAN however swap the motors over fairly easily if one burns out or breaks the wire, and my wire is still tight, although mounting the motor was difficult as the motor used to fit within the curve, so end result was a butchered door..
If i were paying for the BA window motors i'd have gone with the autoloc kit as it looks nicer and well finished, but since i already had the motors i decided to get tricky..
by the way, electric windows rule.
Johnbongjovi, if you know anyone with a lwb near by, can you try the cap in their van? i like the look of my petrol cap, but i like the fact that this one locks
-
The problem i have with using a jap, ford or holden is this, back in the 90s i grafted in a set of VH commodore handles, nice and light, no problem with central locking system. But with the windows, you need to remember what car you got it from, and as stated above there is some work with the original install, then the challenge of getting that part again, unless you buy a spare set, where as if you can get an aftermarket kit, chances are you can get the parts in the future, also you are buying new and not secondhand with no garrantee of wear and tear.
Is there a late model car or truck with flat glass that you could use. What i would do there is buy the gear new and install the bits, being late model should be around for at least 10yrs, light weight and new parts, + being for flat glass less work to install ? maybe someone knows.

the weight should not be a problem , the glass from a 56 Effie is heaver and the rod guys don't seem to have a problem.
-
late model = 2 years max
The little jap trucks, canter and others I think have semi straight glass.
The other thing you have to remember is where the motor sits for the unit, the first electric window unit I used was right length etc but when I mounted it I found the motor was hard on the outer door skin and actually under strain when window was right up, second stuck out to far the other way so third time was a motor in the middle.
After market kit is probably the best bet
-
try hiace i work with cabbies at melbourne airport a lot of the maxi taxis have electric windows and im 99% sure the glass is straight, and who knows being a van the unit may fit better
-
Craig. you need to come up for a coffee! re power windows.
-
me? shit....no I started the thread on a fuel cap then tried to start the power window thread so I could have my fuel cap thread back but no one took the hint lol
or do you need a hand?
-
Can i come to? Craig?
-
hell yer when are we going
-
Can i come to? Craig?
Me too if it's OK - I'll bring a fuel cap AND a window-winder-handle... ;D
-
And beer to go with the coffee
-
so danno ? when do you want all of us ;D ;D ;D
-
I will be going to the hotrod show at Burswood this Sunday.. ;D Cant wait,,,it always keeps my hopes up that one day i will be able to get the time and money to build a nice beddy ;D ;D ;D
-
AHH it seems im not the only one that likes topics kept on topic :P (although i did contribute to the off topic nature)
Separate the posts Craig, its annoying when you're looking for a specific thread later and look past a 'fuel cap' thread when looking for 'power windows' or the like and miss the thread containing what you want..
A bit like that steering rack thread recently, and the thousand other threads
haha
-
now, about that coffee......... all welcome but sheds on lock down till the W.A. VAN NATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all will be revealed.....I hope lol back to the power petrol cap at the Burswood steering rack.......
-
I might peek... :'( critique
