Title: metal flake paint
Post by: hotrod on July 07, 2011, 09:58:20 PM
Gidday guys and gals
always loved metal flake paints and looking at possibly painting the van with a metal flake finish like for eg.

or

my question is, if I wanted to go for eg the purple flake would I use a purple base colour before applying the clear with the metal flake in it or would I use a black base to make it stand out, ( with a purple flake would this darken it)

Cheers Pat

gold or silver base, or you could mix purple and silver flakes with black base or even use a coloured base for another effect

hey i got a question.. is this flake likely to hide imperfections, because its cheap enough to put on a van thats just a daily driver or has it got to be top top prep.

Like any paint when its shiny you will see imperfications, different colours show up differently and flake requires HEAPS of clear to get a smooth coat, that silver on silver pic was an unfinished pic an still in "sandpaper" stage

Depends on how close you get, and how big the imperfection is ??? ???

have decided that I will go with the purple
however, will go with a white base coat, then ford met wild violet with the purple flake in the clear coat
got a sandboard that a kid made last year and left at school, and turned it into a "demo" to show students what can be done
painted half with a black base as recommended and half with a white base then wild violet then fantasy flake(purple) in the clear then clear
the area with the black base is darker but from some angles looks the same colour so thinking of painting white base black graphics then colour to form ghost graphics

these sort of show it but it is hard to photograph and get the full effect
