i have a 79 cf lwb with a 350 chev and turbo 400, 2 sparkplugs sit behind the extractors and have to split the car to get at. i want to drop the engine down and back, would be good to pull the engine out through the side door, ha ha. who needs a tail shaft anyway.
plates have been handed in and wont be back till i have a brand new car.
everyone thinks i'm mad, i hope there wrong
any thoughts or ideas / elbow grease

There are two ways I would consider. The first involves cutting off the two engine mounts, swapping L and R and turn around 180 degrees.
Reweld right at the back of the crossmember. This should move the engine back a fair way, improving weight distribution & leaving penty of room for thermo fans etc.
The other way I've seen involved mounting the engine to the crossmember via a plate at the front of the engine. This drops the engine height so much you could almost use
a standard engine cover.

Done it. How far do you want to go back? I have a V6 sitting between the 2 front seats and put my engine in through the passenger door. BusyKiwi has a V8 sitting behind the front seats I think.
-
Gee, I have one mounted in front of the front seats ;D
-
Here's a pic of a 350 mounted using the second method I mentioned:

Without the extractors in the way, the engine cover can be kept reasonably narrow.
My other thoughts are: You're not mad. But I hope you have plenty of time, and garage space, and money.

And here's the V6...

And here is mine, the mounts sit out in front of the cross member this allows the v6 to fit without cutting the floor any deeper, well pass the floor brace anyway.
-
i like

heres mine :D

You could always do this...

Or fit a 426 Hemi, then the sparkplugs would be easier to get to..

Next step has gotta be mounting a front wheel drive V6 and gearbox combo at the rear of the beddie and drive the rear wheels that way???
The one after that would see the motor and gearbox in a black chrome articulated trailer but you'd have to spin the diff 180 degrees and parking becomes a challenge ??? ??? At least you could swap the powerplant between daily driver and show van with just a tow hitch and a few aftermarket plugs, hoses, wiring connectors and a looong cable for the gearshift ::)
-
now that is a beddie love it
-
so many options, time to talk to to the engineer,
thanks to all
think my budget and time line just got expanded and a bit more
-
How about this one - mounted backwards, driving the diff through a marine V - drive..

Hey Bas! Where does your air box sit? Just curious. I'm going to mount mine in the spare half of the battery well at this stage.
Hey Busy! How are you going to get fresh air to your intake when the engine cover is on?
-
Yeah, I'm running ducting from the grill up to the carbs

On the v6 van under the gearbox cross member, on the Camper where the heater used to be both VN box's
-
i think a few of you are going to get a vist from me over the next few years
love the work
-
Thanks Bas. I thought I might put mine in the battery well because I want to try and get it as far away from the hot exhaust air as possible. I was going to use the original VN box but it's going to be a bit awkward releasing the clips to change the air filter. It's going to be just about as much effort mounting the VN box in the well as it will be to make one up so I think I'll do that instead and just mount a pod filter inside. I f I put the air intake at the uppermost point of the box and have that facing the side of the van it should hopefully keep the intake temperature down and avoid sucking in water when it's pissing down. Thought I might make a heat shield for the intake as well where it passes the exhaust pipe on the way to the engine. A bit of Dynamat in the air box should keep the noise from the pod filter down I think.
-
Yes, I will keep the one in the V6 van where it is, but extend the intake to the box to the outside of the van, sure if you keep the air cold, better HP, but the Beddie goes well anyway with the V6 in it............

the yellow one looks good

With moving the motor back I can only assume that the hand brake would all so have to move.
So what are you guys thinking of doing with this small issue. I ask cause
I would like to put in a 1 piece bench seat in my van.

Mine sits on the engine cover but if you want to install a bench seat you could either mount one to the firewall and dash like a Falcon or mount one to the right hand side of the drivers seat.
