then we paint striped the roof
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bigring015.jpg)
and what i found was 2"of bog an rust
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bigring018.jpg)
so we made like a striper and took the top off
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bigring019.jpg)
so any how here is whats left of the head pannel and the front gutters
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/005-1.jpg)
the replacement panel i made it's in 2 pieces waiting to be welled in the morning
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/010.jpg)
That's all for now

Hey Busy,

Machinery House in East Tamaki has English Wheels available with 7 bottom dies for $1012 including gst and stretching/shrinking machine for $820 incl.
Chinese made of course but for home use they would be ideal.

Garry you've seen my garage, where would I put it? I've got a work bench back there (I think), no idea how big or what colour it is lol.

One day, when I win lotto and get my 8 car garage (and caravan for the missus).
Bedford manor sounds good :D

Title: Re: rust repairs begin
Post by: cords on June 04, 2011, 07:55:53 PM
well got a bit more done today spent about 1/2 hour shaping the corner piece then realised the bit i was tacking a pattern off was rust free   so i cut out a patch and welded it in
Then i file finished the head panel just high file will get the lows fromthe welds
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/012.jpg)
then i unpicked the gutter from the Donner roof cut it through the lip on the roof with a dremel and left enough so i can weld a new lip on
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/001-3.jpg)
as you can see there is a bit of rust in this one but very fixable so first patch i oxy welled in with the henrob
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/003-3.jpg)
just tacked in here
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/008.jpg)
didn't get a pic of it welled but got a lot of distortion so the next few i did with mig nice and slow tack let it cool to touch then tack again
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/009-2.jpg)
and here's a little trick i pixed up to transfer a radius just get your dividers rest your patch as tight as you can set your dividers so they will scribe the radius onto your patch and away you go don't know if it will help any one but when i was shown it it was a light bulb moment

Title: Re: rust repairs begin
Post by: cords on August 08, 2011, 06:47:08 PM

Well where to start so I got the donor roof and two guards soda blasted and after I sold a kidney to pay for it this is the surprise’s I got
So a few dents in the roof and a wee bit of rust
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/001-8.jpg)
And the guards are as expected few dents nothing we can’t fix
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/012-Copy.jpg)
So I took one to tafe the other night and replaced the two bits that were missing and straightened out the profile line one bit of rust to go and a bit of slapper work on the dents and it will be finished
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/032.jpg)

So today I got onto replacing the rusty gutter on the passenger’s side
Offending rusty bit and what was under it
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/018-Copy.jpg)

New piece
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/025-Copy.jpg)
and all cleaned up and ready for the new bit
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/022-Copy.jpg)
In place ready for spot welding until I remember my spot welders at micks so plan 2 plug welds
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/027-Copy.jpg)

And all in with a coat of etch primmer
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/028-Copy.jpg)
Only 2 more small repairs to go on this side the over to the driver’s side which is in much better shape
Title: Re: rust repairs begin
Post by: cords on August 22, 2011, 06:48:04 PM
Well got a bit more done today all but finished the gutters (drip rail) the back was worse than I thought and painted everything that’s inside with KBS ;D and worked out I have replaced 10’ of gutter :o
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/012-1.jpg)

All that’s left to do is a small repair on the right rear corner should take ½ an hour :-\

And found some nasty ones on the rear right quarter are pillars supposed to move when you open the door :o
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/010-4.jpg)
And the front guards all but finished just got to repair the old aerial hole ;)

so i have started the repaires i have the skin made and about half way through the frame repaires
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/053.jpg)

been playing withe the left c pillar come rear quarter need to replace a big secon of floor and the pillar and the bottom of the quarters
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/012-2.jpg)

started on the internal brace before
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/014-2.jpg)

after
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/015-1.jpg)

went to make a floor section and relised im out of 1.2mm sheet :(  so i made a pillar section in a simmple hammer form can any one pick where i went wrong :?

Title: Re: rust repairs begin
Post by: cords on October 31, 2011, 08:08:14 PM
thanks for the kind words mate dont know about craftsmen i have more scrap than bits that worked :o
anyhow your wish is my comand so how about a show and tell on hammer forming
so here is the form made out of some old form ply i had laying around and some mdf offcuts for packers
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/001-Copy-2.jpg)
checking to make sure i make the right one this time :-[
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/002-Copy-1.jpg)
cut the blank with plenty of extra to allow for stuff ups about 30mm is plenty
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/003-Copy-1.jpg)
clamped and in the vice
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/007-8.jpg)
now start to bend it over with a hammer i did the back first because it has a single bend and helps to hold it in place when i do the other side
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/005-9.jpg)
then on to the other side bend it over to about 45 with just a hammer
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/010-6.jpg)
then start dressing it down with a ball pein hammer and a bolster chisel thats had the end radius and the edge taken off
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/012-3.jpg)
then do the last bend
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/014-3.jpg)
dress it up and were done by the way this section is 1.5mm and takes some real beating to get it to move
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/017-1.jpg)
and heres the bottom of the quarter i have been playing with
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/018.jpg)
enjoy folks Cheers Gav

Well done, looks like it came from the factory. 1.5mm mate that is going to be solid. We used 1.2 on most of the metal work and .095 on non structual fabrication. Look forward to seeing the cutting and welding of the above panels.

You have reason to be a "little bit Proud" your doing excellent work and showing how its done, very inspiring.

I have some rust repairs to tackle and I watch with interest how you do it, and I will give it a try with your work as a guide.

i did it at tafe because my rollers are not wide enough to do the full pannel and neither is my 4' pan brake in saying that i can show you how to make a smaller one length wise with a bit of pipe to shape the radius

weld through paint or coating, like zinc or copper is used between layers of sheetmetal to stop metal to metal rust. It does burn but unlike paint still sticks and protects

well its been awhile been real busy with the new job and runing all over the country side draging home rusty cars
So i got a bit done this week end
Patch in the front of the roof was not to my liking so i cut it back out and redid it much happier now
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/027-2.jpg)

then i got the sons to help me carry it out side spin it around and put it back in the shed so i could put the last patch in the back
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/040.jpg)
so next week end we will strip the old gutters of and put it back on the van and get it ready for paint :D

ok here we go
we built this off the back of the house up the coast
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/059_zpsa4a3b6e3.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/059_zpsa4a3b6e3.jpg.html)
we have just finished a pad for the 2 new 25000l water tanks ,fitted a fire system, painted the whole house , finished 120sqm of deck and tiled the laundry and fitted a new toilet. just the bath room to go and the house is finished.
ok after that mouth full , picked this pair up from qld for a mate
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/036_zpsdb89a96c.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/036_zpsdb89a96c.jpg.html)
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/035_zps3516d0ca.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/035_zps3516d0ca.jpg.html)
as you can see they need some work, 1938 chev coupe ute rear quarters and guards
picked the best one and piked it together enough to make a pattern off
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/041_zps0503d8e2.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/041_zps0503d8e2.jpg.html)
the guards are going on a trailer ,they both need the last 12" replaced ,so I made 2 of them
started like this
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/079_zpsa6d832c3.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/079_zpsa6d832c3.jpg.html)
then this
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/084_zpsf3b3f61e.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/084_zpsf3b3f61e.jpg.html)
then check with the flexible pattern I made like this
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/078_zpsc05f87ea.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/078_zpsc05f87ea.jpg.html)
after a bit of wheeling I ended up with the twins
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/086_zpsb15caa7d.jpg) (http://s282.photobucket.com/user/gavin3554/media/086_zpsb15caa7d.jpg.html)
as all ways if you guys have any questions just ask and I will try and answer
Cheers Gav

well i said i would put some picks up so here goes
It started out like this 14 years ago then sat for the last 7 and its the wife's van
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bedfordfrontleft.jpg)
then we paint striped the roof
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bigring015.jpg)
and what i found was 2"of bog an rust
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bigring018.jpg)
so we made like a striper and took the top off
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/bigring019.jpg)
so any how here is whats left of the head pannel and the front gutters
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/005-1.jpg)
the replacement panel i made it's in 2 pieces waiting to be welled in the morning
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk272/gavin3554/010.jpg)
That's all for now
