Title: URGENT: NEED HELP!!!
Post by: Jock on August 28, 2008, 10:52:51 PM
Okay so it has been a mammoth week for me, moving house with my other half overseas - what a mission! I used the Beddy for most of it but on the second day she started to give me trouble.

When I go to start it this is what happens:

1. Turn key to ignition on.
2. Ignition lights come on.
3. Turn key to start.
4. Starter motor not making the usual spinning noise - just a loud zzzzzzzz noise like it is jammed???
5. Turn ignition off.
6. Repeat steps 1,2,3
7. Van starts but starter motor making a ticking noise while driving - like it is still engaged???

This went on for a day, the Beddy got me to and from but is now stuck in the carpark of my old apartment building with a table on the roof and all of my belongings in it.

I went to start it yesterday and the ignition lights came on, the engine started to turn and then it just started to make the zzzzzzzz noise like the starter motor was jammed. Now it won't turn over.
Ignition turns on but when you turn the key to start it just goes zzzzzzzzzzzz like the starter is cooked?

It is safe in there but I need to get i out or the real estate won't release bond.

Is it electrical or is the starter motor cooked?
What shall I do?

I'm thinking the starter motor is cooked, buy a new one and drive out of there?

HELP PLEASE HELP!!!! Need to move van asap.

Cheers

Jock

Jock

Sounds like the starter relay contacts are stuffed.

I had a chyrsler that did a similar thing, you could buy contacts for them and replace them, but they didnt last that long, I ended up bronzing them up and increasing the contact area which worked. (they are the bits the battery terminal connects to)

The quickest way to get you going would be to get a change over starter and just replace it.

hey Jock sounds to me like the solinoide on your starter has pooped itself! You can often get away with a quick fix, by tapping it with a hammer. The solinoide is the little round cylinder bit with the wires going into it attached to the starter. If you drove the van with the solinoide still engaged chances are you've cooked it! If you've got the cash you should just go buy a new one from an auto elecy dude person!

Tweaker you a tweakin' awesome!!!  ;D
So it is most likely that I need a new solinoide not a whole new starter?
What will I be up for cost wise? Have already found a good Auto Electrician through a mate of mine.

Before I get too excited I need to add 1 more piece of information. Sometime the starter would get stuck ON
and just keep turning and turning even when you pulled the key out! Scary shit.

Jock it sounds like the return spring or solinoid to me.
the solinoid can be changed without unbolting starter, but you will need a powerfull soldering iron to do this.
if u need a hand just let me know im in the liverpool area. u could come over here, i got stacks of starters laying on shed shelves,

yeah its the solinoid getting stuck on , what happens is the contacts weld themselves together so it keeps going even when turned off and keys out .
