I have this canister almost underneath the passenger seat of my 1979 CF LWB, it is wired into the loom (purple wire) and the alternator, it looks like an original part, but I cannot identify it off the wiring diagrams. I'm sure I sound really dumb with this but what is it? See pic

It looks like a relay. If the heavy wire goes to the starter motor, it's probably the starter relay.
My guess is that it is not a std part as the bolt/stud holding it up is far longer than it needs to be.

could be an external regulator... for the alternator ???
-
i dont recognise it.. follow the wires.. yeh i thats a good suggestion take a photo of the alternator for us so we can see if its a inbuilt reg alternator or not?

Could it be a solenoid used to charge second battery ?

Thats my thoughts, a bettery isolator for charging dual batteries.

that would be my guess too,
but the solenoid could be used to isolate something else

Yeah tried that :-\
Didn't start :D
Not REALLY suprised
-
Just a guess but i'd say he had a leak somewhere and it was easier to isolate the battery than find the leak
-
It's a battery isolator for dual batteries. Mine had one the same. Just as rusty too ;D
More places to introduce voltage drops in the electrics. >:(
Cheers

Thanks Neil et al. Yeah where the voltage drops were coming from lead me to find this in the first place! :(
-
It's a common theme for Beddies. Voltage drops are an absolute pain. Mine had water leaks in the past and connections got corroded and one thing leads (pun intended) to another. I'm winning but geez!!!! Lucas electricals ???
-
Yeah, always a pain.
I ended up putting a cable straight to the starter motor with a relay from the key as it was only getting 6 volts from the key
