Title: welding to australian standards
Post by: hotrod on February 25, 2011, 06:16:34 PM
Am going to eliminate my rear doors (have found a panel beater who gets excited about custom work ;D) and have contacted Qld transport idiots
now despite an engineer stating I do not require a cert for this he advised that i check with DOT idiots and they would give me a piece of paper stating same
Well big mistake >:( having done this they stated we get a lot of these! what sort of vehicle is a bedford? what type of doors do they have??? etc (translated- no friggin idea) and you need it passed by an engineer
I then told them NO I DON'T NEED AN ENGINEER.
They then said I have to draw up exactly what I want to do, where I want to do it, where I want to weld it who is going to weld it and to what australian standard will it be welded.(at this stage I knew what I wanted to do and where I wanted to shove it)
I asked what australian standard they needed it done to and  surprise surprise  they DID NOT KNOW >:(
So an hour later on the World Wide Wait(www) and none the wiser
Does anyone know what A.S. the welding would have to be done too
I also told them I would just bolt it closed to stop it moving squeeking and opening when driving but was told that would fail a rwc as it is a door that no longer functions as a door and started to go on about occupant exits  until I pointed out it would still be easier to get out of than a coupe and it had only 2 seats anyway and pointed out cargo barriers stop people getting int CARGO areas. So he said  if i WELD it, it will be fine i just needed the information THEY did no know  ??? ??? ???
Any help would be appreciated

AS 1554 is the standard welding criterior all you need to do is draw up a welding schedule for the job IE; amps type of gas & wire and weld joints (but join ,Vgroove etc) give it to em on paper so it looks like you know what ya doin and they have the paper work to cover their arses and all will be sweet   Cheers Neil

Hey Hotrod, mate i got my doors welded up years ago, and i can tell you there is no approval needed, unless you have a row of seats in the back with belts, and then it will be rejected, the rule is : one seat = one door, in my case, 3 seats and i have 3 operational doors. My mate who welded my doors did engineer quality welding, or the sort of welds that a boilermaker would put down. The theory is if, the welds on a boiler hold then those on a set of back doors will certainly hold. Trust me the metal around my welds will give b4 the welds do. As for transport, they require the bible the minute you mention change and car in the same sentence,  ;) i have had my doors welded up for almost 20 yrs and never had a problem, and i have had a few engineers over my van plating different things.
Here is my theory of qld transport, it reminds me of kevin bloody wilson and the dictaphone song, to ring qld trans, is like talking to operator 42  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I am looking for a new sheetmetal guy, still, and yes i need someone that gets EXCITED as i do when i talk custom, i only have a few minor jobs to finish, but if i dont find someone by july, i may have to bite the bullet and get numnuts back to finish his work, he is good but everyday is a goldcoast holiday, unreliable. The bottom pic is what they like to see, but take a peek in my gallery, and look at the build you can see my doors being welded up.

george.
