Post by: ben on August 22, 2008, 07:01:19 PM
hi can someone please explain how to do this behind the dash?? im in the process of doing it but with all the corners and stuff its a real pain..

should i be pulling the whole dash out? or can i glue the carpet behind it without taking it out?

ive cut a few slits in the carpet to try and make it sit right.. is that the way to do it? then fill in the slits with ofcuts??

just like this cheers stevo!

Ben,

My mate is an automotive trimmer.

Out of anything that can be trimmed, the dash is often the hardest part.
To do a decent job of it you should remove the dash completely.

The carpet that you use for the floor is different to the carpet that you use for
the dash. The carpet that you use for the dash is called a 'flex carpet', it is unbacked
and can be stretched/wrapped around the curves of the dash.
You shouldn't be putting 'slits in' the dash and then filling them in with off-cuts.

When covering the dash it's best to use a spray gun with a glue pot on the end of it.
Clean both surfaces with prep-sol and the spary with the adhesive.
Let both surfaces dry a little and then fit the dash.
Use a heat gun to heat up the glue in places that need to be stretched/fixed.

There's a bit more to it than that but that's the general gist of it.

hi guys i see ya found the pics of my old camper, i lined the dash with hulliner, its a unbacked formable carpet used in boats etc,use contact glue on both sides and stick down, i dont wait for the glue to flash off so if you got a wrinkle or its not quite rite you can pull it off easier and reposition it, glue all the dash down untill you come to your speedo and make a cut from the bottom were your speedo goes thru and form around there, if you keep the cut to the bottom you wont see it and you dont have to take the dash out its prettyy easy, give it a go, the great thing is with the hulliner you can push stretch into corners etc but make sure that when you want to cut it use a very sharp craft knife, thats the secret to cutting this stuff, i normally use a spray gun and compressor or you can buy the glue in earosol cans. dont glue it with a brush it gets patchy and usually lets go, spraying is the way to go have a go mate its easy and you will be [pleased you done it yourself, if ya need any more info gice me a yell cheers stevo 8)

The sharp blade is essential, as soon as you feel it getting slightly blunt snap the end off or replacing the blade.

hi ben hers a pic of my engine cover covered in the same stuff and i glued it on in one piece beleive it or not, a little stretching and easing in the rite places is the trick so a dash is pretty easy to do, the worst that can happen is it looks like crap but what the hell ya can always tear it off and start again, aleast ya can say, i done it myself cheers stevo
